Ha, i was about to post thisExtended Shadows Distance does some... weird stuff with shadows in the vicinity of the player.
Maxed w/ high res shadows: (look at the palm tree shadow)

So yeah, if I turn it off I get detail back in shadows... but then there's shadow pop-in while going fast. Argh!
It's like it's degrading quality in order to cover a wider area.
