Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Official Teaser Trailer #2

The shot of the crashed star destroyer was the first thing they've shown so far for this film that's showed some promise. Cool, creative way to bring back some of the OT designs/concepts without necessarily making everything a rehash.

Then they ruined that with the Han reveal.

Yep I'm hyped. The tease trailer suggested it, but the new teaser outright confirms it. This looks good. This looks like Star Wars as we know it and love it. Heart, soul, intrigue, ACTING. People can act again!

My only gripe is that the chrome storm trooper shot reminded me of the fake fan trailer that came out a day or so before the first actual teaser (many misguided fools somehow thought it was legit). There was a chrome stormtrooper in that fake trailer and this one actually looked very similar which just felt weird. Everything else, oh my.

The opening shot, the classic music but with a hint of some new elements that adds something to it, the shot of R2, the colours and lighting... Kylo Ren's light sabre looks furious, he's sure to be a formidable enemy but I wonder who's pulling his strings.

AHHHHH! From all I'd heard about Disney buying the franchise and what they had planned, such as involving Kathleen Kennedy and then JJ, getting Lawrence Kasdan involved with the script, casting fresh new faces in key roles... it all sounded like they paid a lot of money for this, but they're not going to do a cheap cash in, but do it right. So far so good! I trust them, certainly far more than if George had persisted in directing yet more turgid films in the laziest way possible so they lack all soul and excitement.

In Disney I trust. Kathleen, JJ and others, I know they have a great story planned out and I cannot wait to be stunned as I watch this for the first time in the cinema this Xmas.

Feel like a kid again!

To be fair, Disney isn't the one who got Kathy Kennedy involved. Lucas retired and gave Lucasfilm over to Kennedy as his successor. Disney then bought Lucasfilm and left Lucasfilm basically as is. A lot seem to see it as Disney buying the Star Wars franchise. But its more like when Disney bought Pixar. Disney bought Lucasfilm and Lucasfilm continues to operate semi-independently within the structure doing their own thing with same people running it as were prior to Disney.

I doubt it's the Empire as such. Most likely it broke apart during the 30 years since ROTJ after the Emperor and Vader's deaths, and this First Order is a remnant of it that has organised into a new threat under presumably the new Sith in the trailer. Hence the Stormtroopers, etc.

Ok but in the prequals the Republic required vast resources to aquire an army, so to be able to supply 1000s of troopers, machinery etc I'd assume it's not something you can easily rebuild. But here it looks like they've grown in numbers and advanced technologically. Storm troopers are clones so would be interested to see how they're controlled without Darth Sidius, actually how they've progressed as if little has happened.

Another poster mentioned the Empire being galactic with many others evil parties invested in its prosperity, still not convinced though.

I'm pretty sure by the time A New Hope hits Storm Troopers are only half clones. The rest are recruits

They're not clones any more. Actually, by the time of the OT, there were few clones active. Most of the Stormtroopers were regular recruits.

If I was responsible for explaining this, I would suggest that there was an uneasy peace treaty brokered after a few more years of fighting post-ROTJ, dividing the galaxy into two states and some non-affiliated rim worlds. The new republic would be numerically superior but politically weaker because of its democratic structure. After a few decades of peace the hostilities have broken out again.

I mean a shitload of Imperial infrastructure probably survived pretty easily including production planets, garrison planets and the like...

The post production is really interesting. They've deliberately emulated the look of the 70s films.

I remember hearing that Abrams was not only trying to find as much of the same film stock actually used back in 76, but had people working on a post-production filter that would emulate the look of that stock on any digital footage shot for the movie.

Dunno if that little tidbit ever got verified though.

One thing I really like about these teasers is that you can tell they didn't just get some marketing company to make them, everything is really well thought out and placed, for fucks sake they even got John Williams to compose a score for both of them

I wouldn't doubt it, they'd want that look applied to all the visual effects too.

First Order is interesting

In the new canon, the New Order is what Palpatine called the Empire. It's showed up in Tarkin and some Rebels material, but originates in Lucas's backstory for the first movie:

Having exterminated through treachery and deception the Jedi Knights, guardians of justice in the galaxy, the Imperial governors and bureaucrats prepared to institute a reign of terror among the disheartened worlds of the galaxy. Many used the imperial forces and the name of the increasingly isolated Emperor to further their own personal ambitions.

But a small number of systems rebelled at these new outrages. Declaring themselves opposed to the New Order they began the great battle to restore the Old Republic.

The question is, why change from "New" to "First"?

Finn is looking back at the explosion! Not a badass confirmed!

And why does he look out of breath in every shot he's in in the trailer?

Judging by the scenes with him so far. Seems like he is either a Stormtrooper that sees something happen he doesn't agree with, and sets out to get out of the Order (?) and is thrust into many sequences where he is on the run, or he is just a part of the Order or is someone important that is being chased and again is on the run.

But either way, from what I've seen it looks like he is on the run. Maybe he starts with the Order, escapes a Star Destroyer or something in one of those capsules, ends up on this planet and eventually finds his way to town where he meets Rey ( Daisy ). The First Order hunts him down on the planet and attacks Rey's town, setting into motion her getting more involved in the fight against the Order along with Rey.

So my guess in sequence

- new army or alliance is formed called the First Order
- soldier Finn is not liking what he sees and tries to escape
- Finn lands on planet Jakku
- Finn crosses the desert, finding a village
- Finn meets Rey
- Finn is located by the First Order and attacked
- the Order attacks Rey's town / home in the process
- Rey joins in the fight against the First Order and the new Sith

Something like that is my guess ( and thinking about it, the opening sequence would almost mirror the opening of New Hope where C3P0 / R2D2 is on the run, crosses the desert, lands in the care of Skywalker, droids are tracked and located, Luke's family is murdered, and he sets out to join in the fight against the Empire )

CHEWIE DON'T PUT ME IN A HOME

No way it's Ahsoka, too short and its eyes are too goddamn huge.

Yeah, I don't think we'll be seeing any CW or Rebels characters lol. Although the way they're building up Kanan makes me wonder if he'll show up elsewhere besides a book.

This may be a bit blasphemous - but part of the reason I am so excited for this movie is that I think despite there already being 6 Star Wars movies - I am still waiting for one I can feel is "complete". Let me explain:

I absolutely adore the original trilogy, growing up with them they have a special place in my heart. The movies are a ton of fun and have some great moments. That said, as films they have quite a few problems. The acting is average, at best, and a lot of the dialogue is silly albeit charming. As expected, the special effects have also dated and now that all we have available on blu ray is the super special extreme editions they are just a mish mash of technology.

The prequels don't really need explanation - poor dialogue, uneven acting, and special effects that Lucas and co thought were better at the time than they actually were. Not to mention all the story mistakes.

So in that sense, I think Episode VII might finally be the first film in the series to deliver exactly what I want out of a Star Wars film: the fun and awe of the original trilogy with state of the art special effects and cinematography, excellent acting, and hopefully a great story to go along with it.
