GTA V PC Performance Thread

Today I started the game straight after booting my PC and I swear it felt more responsive. Are all of you aware of the mouse sensitivity bug? Where lower FPS = higher sensitivity & mouse acceleration. I've definitely noticed it once I got to Trevor's introduction and was quite annoyed by it.

The only things I changed were I set post fx and reflections to ultra before jumping into the story mode. I was getting about 45-50 fps but it felt just as responsive as the 60 fps I was getting in the city. I even initiated a shootout and had zero issues with aiming. It was also immediately apparent that triple buffering had turned on by itself and I didn't need to alt+tab to activate it. Maybe changing the graphics settings had something to do with this.

Whatever happened, I'm very pleased! Though this game still continues to be kind of confusing in regards to performance. Hopefully some patches can sort these issues out.

Everyone should put their textures on Very High. It really looks amazing, very sharp and it hardly affect the FPS from what I could tell. If u got it on High, might as well put it on Very High. So worth!

Awesome! I still need to disable my Nvidia GPU, because I'm playing on a laptop and Social Club crashes when I start it up... Social Club is the worst. >_>

Got to Trevor's place today, his home at night absolutely destroys my FPS, we're talking like 60 down to 37-50 with fluctuations. And i'm not talking about the general area, it's when i go to park a car in the garage / go near the property and look at it.

Absolutely weird, I know they obvious put more detail into the character's homes and they will naturally be more stuff / higher quality assets going on, but that seems like a bug.

Funny thing is apparently with the crack to bypass the social club the game runs better as social club eats cup resources

I'm on a x51 so I need to disable my Nvidia gpu too which gets annoying

Yeah people have been complaining about it since raw input doesn't feel like it should. Game works like older fps games do in terms of mouse pointer responsiveness being tied to fps. I'm avoiding anything taxing until I get a new system in a few years. If we get mods I will be ahappy guy but for now I will take stable 60fps or fidelity at 30fps aiming in between seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Yeah, I noticed that the area around his garage has a hit on performance. Turning shadows down from softest to softer helped.

This is happening to me today. I can't even play GTA Online...it's crashing within 5 minutes each time.

Have you been using that .bat file to launch the game where it kills the GTALauncher.exe? I found out that was the cause of my crashes. The game does a check every now and then through the launcher and if it's not running it crashes the game.

I am currently using this instead now to lower CPU usage by the launcher process.

Code:
start steam://rungameid/271590
timeout 60
wmic process where name="GTA5.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
wmic process where name="gtavlauncher.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"
wmic process where name="subprocess.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"

Hey ho ! I paid 60 $ for a game that doesn't launch. Great work Rockstar !

Do you have an integrated GPU on your CPU? If so, try disabling it in the bios. That seems to be the problem for most people if the launcher crashes.

Just went back to the XB1 version and it's hard to believe that it's running at 1080p. Looks shimmery as hell. I know it only has FXAA but even on the PC version with the same AA solution it looks way better than XB1. 16x AF makes a big difference, too.

Anyway, I can never go back again. Dat 60fps goodness.

Game is pretty much unplayable for me with the freezes/crashes. It works flawlessly 60FPS between the crashes though.

The intro worked without crashes by the way, only one freeze.
Gonna wait for some patch/new driver...

Must be an issue with the 970 cause I can't get rid of the stuttering no matter what. I'm not using Gsync but I do have a 144hz monitor and it's still VERY noticeable.

I don't know if you guys fixed this meanwhile, but here goes my input anyway. 660ti, only half hour of testing, lots of things to still try out. But the game stutters so far as well. This is a 2gb card that because of its architecture only can use 1.5gb, it can't use the full 2gb at once, at least with the full bandwidth speed. So the game reports 2040mb of VRAM. At that prediction usage, stutters. The GPU is only using 1.45gb of its VRAM. Lowered settings until the prediction was at 1.4, it still stutters. Is the 660ti architecture design the same as the 970 and is this the reason for the 970's 3.5gb of max usage as well, instead of 4gb?

Because if yes, there could be a connection here maybe...

Yeah, I've been having a similar problem. Just can't sign in through social club.
Funny thing is, I played it once on launch without a hitch. Only the second time I went to play have I had trouble. Reinstalling social club does nothing.

Besides that, I'm impressed with the performance. Seems the quality of social club is a little lacking, which is probably made by a separate team altogether

I don't throw the word "broken" around but this is straight up broken... I'm on the mission Blitz Play and when it switches to Michael after you pick up the getaway car, I get a crash to desktop EVERY fucking time. Tried restarting, tried running in DX10, tried a lot. What the fuck? I'm seriously getting tired of doing the whole mission every time I wanna see if something new works.

Where are you seeing 37 fps drop ? It's about a 21 fps drop going from 2xMSAA + TXAA to 8xMSAA + FXAA.

Edit: you referring to 96fps to 60fps? That's because later is at 4k w/ AA

I meant the drop to 37 fps. The minimum fps in your latest update said 37.

How much VRAM do you really need to run at high+ settings at 1080p (or 1200p)? More than 3GB?
I have my game set to 1080p with all main graphics settings maxed (bar MSAA) and all the sliders to full along with long shadows in the advanced menu and its under 3gb used with no issues at all, its running really great and looks stunning.

Running on an R9 280x GPU and a PII X6 CPU.

The game at 5K is incredibly demanding.

I tried 4x MSAA + FXAA + TXAA + 8x Reflection MSAA and everything else maxed out (including Ultra PostFX and NV PCSS Shadows) and w/ 4x GTX TITAN X OC'd mildly gives me around 40 - 45FPS @ 5K!

Dat VRAM:

I don't think each home is loaded independently of the outside world so even indoors there game is still likely rendering the outside vegetation. Turn down grass settings; that will probably help.

My 780ti is running almost all settings maxed just fine at 1080p. 3gb vram
Does anybody know the setting that causes/disables the weird blurry interlacing near the edges of models? It looks gross to me.
Interlacing? I'm guessing it's dithering. That's most easily seen on grass. Turn up your AA.

LOL do you really need all that AA on 5k?

Man this game needs a patch for stability BIG TIME. Performance and visuals are amazing, but the further I progress it is just becoming a minefield of crash-to-desktops. I'm afraid to do story missions because I'm sick of rebooting the whole fucking game....

How far in are you ?

Have only just done the first heist.

Finally got to try it out. It runs pretty damn fine on my 970 with 4670k at 3.9
These are the settings that give me 60fps 99.9% of the time. When i go outside the city, fps tends to drop a bit in some places but nothing scary. Dropping grass to HIGH or turning off AA solves it.

If only there's a way to turn of CA, it would be so great

Pretty similar to what I am using. I have FXAA off and Post FX on Ultra instead of reflections and some other minor stuff.

Also note how the game predicts 2,6GB memory usage, but it is much higher in reality.

my god that is beautiful though

I would guess you're right, i'm definitely not going to turn down any settings though unless I find more areas like this. So far after 20 hours, this is the only location that tanks my FPS, i'll just have to stomach it.

I have exactly the same issue. Saw somebody posted the same problem on Rockstar support as well...unless that was you.

Have only just done the first heist.

On a mission called Blitz Play, 3rd heist (I think) and I got 20-something hours played.

Crashes are becoming more frequent, as are weird memory leak / declining performance issues. Was rock solid for the first 10-12 hours.

I have exactly the same issue. Saw somebody posted the same problem on Rockstar support as well...unless that was you.

Yeah seems very common. It's fucking annoying (sort of like typing "fucking" on an iPhone 6 times to avoid saying "ducking")

I wanna continue this awesome main story.

Yea, it uses 2.5gb when it loads the game, but when i start driving through city it climbs to around 3.3. Maybe it's actually caching stuff, similar to CODAW

Overall i'm satisfied with it. I had some doubts, mainly because of my CPU, seeing that it barely hits 60fps in most benchmarks

Weird issue with the first heist mission. If I tried to pull to a weapon while in a vehicle, the game would crash. Was able to repeat this several times.

Luckily I was able to beat it without using any guns. The problem went away once the mission ended successfully.

Anyone got optimal settings for a single Titan X? I'm having some trouble in wooded areas, even with grass at Very High, MSAAx2- drops to the 40's in places right outside of Fort Zancudo and driving stutters. I don't know why I'm having such problems- the card gets hot (Reflection on Ultra, x2). I just capped it at 30fps, because I was getting frustrated. Even without any form of AA, it drops for me outside of the city. Granted, I'm still rocking an i7 3770K, 8GB RAM but still.

This happened to me with the Trevor mission "Friends Reunited" like 2-3 times, maybe 4...I don't know I wasn't really counting. I was just getting frustrated.
When I'd get back in the truck after planting all the sticky bombs and detonating
it'd crash right before I could drive away and I'd have to relaunch. It did finally work for me after I had shut off the computer for a while because I was getting a little peeved. I did it as quickly as possible (mainly because I was a little frustrated doing the same thing over and over again) and it just worked that time. That's really the only time I had an issue with the game though. I should try to replay the mission and see if it'll do it again.

Turn stuff off in the "advanced graphics" section. Long Shadows, Hi Res Shadows, High Detail Streaming, Extended distance scaling and shadows. You'll go back up to 100+ fps, as per Totalbiscuit's port report. I'm experiencing the same thing on 2 980s.

I did this after watching his video too, and was able to turn up the options more in the regular Graphics tab and I've gotten a much more stable 60. I'm only running SLI 970 @ 1080 but I'm a lot happier with the experience now even though it really wasn't that bad for me before.

So, anyone else who are having CTDs during the story mode, are you guys/gals using the RSC version? I'm on RSC version with the CTDs...

I'm able to get what he's getting in the video. Your 2x 970s should do better than just 60. I guess there's more tweaking to do...

I've had a bit of stutter which is annoying every now and then, but after reading this thread I feel very lucky I haven't had a crash yet. Getting close to the 2nd heist, on Steam version.

What resolution are you playing?

Also, I really feel like something weird is going on with the memory usage in this game. Most monitors will only report 3~4gb usage of system memory but it seems like people having fps issues that shouldn't are on 8gb of ram.

I have a 570 which is a pretty old card, but the game was running fine for the past few days, but I am constantly getting streaming issues. I'm driving fast with a car and all of the sudden the textures disappear.

I don't have a lot of VRAM, but up until yesterday it was running fine. Has there been any fixes for this yet? Will increasing LOD help?

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/lastbaron/saved/3PbXsY

That's my build. Barely getting 30 FPS with DX 10.1 at 1080p, most settings on high. Textures seem to be hogging the most memory. I have the latest beta drivers for my GPU, I shudder to think what my performance might have been like without them if they truly make a difference.

What settings should I be looking at the most to scale back on? I'm gonna try turning down shadows and grass and see if that helps at all. Is population density/variety a big factor too? I have them cranked all the way up since they don't seem to have an impact on memory usage.

Wondering what settings people with my setup are running.

i7 3700k (not overclocked)
770 4GB
8GB DDR3 1886MHz

I'm running pretty much everything max except TSAA at at 2, Nvidia thing on and shadows at lowest value. Advanced stuff is all off. I get roughly 60FPS but turning Nvidia's graphical thing off gives me constant 60.

Yeah. Definately two issues with the game. The memory leak being worst. I start at around 4GB and end up at 7.5 in around 4-5 hours or so and then crash. Second issue is if I start the game with v-sync I will be at 30fps most of the time even in areas where I can be higher. If I turn it off and on again it's fine. Maybe a global setting issue? Anyway, the memory leak is a bummer. Once I hit 7GB the game starts losing frames hand-over-fist. Hope it's patched soon.

Results with a 2GB card are surprisingly smooth, i'm using the following hardware:

Core i7 4770 running at stock clocks.
16GB RAM running at 1600MHz
and a mildly overclocked 2GB GTX 770
the game is installed to a 2TB seagate mechanical HDD

I have everything turned up as high as they will go, apart from AA (8x) and Textures (High) with the ignore suggested limits option on.

The game runs at a fairly consistent 60FPS and it takes an ungodly amount of carnage to cause a noticeable drop, even so it only dips to around 55FPS.

(I'm using the RSC version of the game, no crashes as of yet)
