Yeah, I think this is going to be rather divisive.
It seems like a way for J. J. to focus on Rey as the "new Luke" thrown into the hero's cycle and only she and her friends can save the galaxy, but it comes off as a retread.

That's what I am worried about. I really like the trailer and will most likely love the movie. But it seems like a retrend to me..

I find it really bizarre, quite frankly, when people can't even admit that the prequels had some beautiful imagery because of bad compositing in Episode II and shot-reverse-shot during expository sequences that nobody noticed until Plinkett mentioned it but which yet now is COMPLETELY HORRIFYING. Meanwhile RotJ continues to get a free pass because of nostalgia despite it being absolutely visually bland.

"Let go of your hate."

I always found it frustrating because I knew that if I were a kid in the prequel era, I would have never liked Star Wars. I was an iconoclastic kid and even at 10 years old, I hated pandery cartoon characters making fart jokes, badly acted romance, etc.

Eh, there was still OG trilogy to adore and we mostly hate the prequels too. Some people have nostalgia towards PT, but they often realize it's because they haven't seen them in years and don't want to shatter the illusion that they weren't that bad.

Honestly, most people my age think when they hear oof Star Wars they only think of 1-6 if they didn't see the series, others go straight for 4-6.

Its literally "The Hero's Journey". Look it up. Its been in writing since the dawn of fucking language.

If you are worried about this film retreading A New Hope, then you my friend don't realize how many stories have been retreading since the dawn of written language.

I really am happy there's so much BB8 love. Too often new characters are brushed aside in favour of more familiar ones, but it seems there's room for more than 2 droids in our hearts

The same story could be broken down for the character in your avatar. If you are worried about this film retreading A New Hope, then you my friend don't realize how many things have been retreading since the dawn of written language.

But you can have a hero's journey without touching on the same basic plot points of New Hope-RotJ.

I agree with you there. Episode III had lot of beautiful shots in there. I really loved Kashyyk look in that film..

it may look nice, but it's not conveying a fraction as much information and meaning as the opening shot of the teaser

I felt like that first shot was packed with symbolism and in-world historical significance, whereas i'm not sure what this shot is supposed to be telling me, if anything (i haven't seen that movie in a long time so i don't remember the context)

Welp, Ford actually WAS Han Solo. Hearin that with dat music with dat desert visuals.... Brings ya back much more than any of those prequels. Teaser looks like a family member of the original trilogy while the prequels remain a distant cousin

Wow man, I am allowed to criticize it. I am looking forward to the movie, and I know all about The Hero Journey. No need to be an asshole to me.

Sure I exaggerated but come on, there's not enough space in my space opera. Yes there are cool sword fights and a few neat battle set-pieces. But for the most part it's just dull, stakeless dialogue. There is always something going on in New Hope and Empire and RotJ, there are loooong swaths of all the prequels where there's just absolutely NOTHING happening.

There are sections of Star Wars (Ep IV) where things slow down quite a bit. Someone ignorant might say that nothing is happening. "Nothing happening" isn't inherently bad, it's all in how it's handled and what purpose it serves. I'm no prequel defender though, I get your point. Most of the stuff in them is terrible (specially the dialogue), but they do have their moments, even if they're few.

But you can have a hero's journey without touching on the same basic plot points of New Hope-RotJ.

And based off of 2 teasers, less than 3 minutes long, we can assume this film is touching on the same plot points as A New Hope/RotJ....Gotcha.

Text is all in how you read it. Not trying to be an asshole, just seems to be a completely silly thing to be worried about at this stage of footage being released.

Hell, after the prequels and whatever-the-fuck road they took, I'd be happy for retreading after what they decided to do. But clearly, theres no way to know at this point.

I'm responding to the plot points someone in this thread outlined.

That person could very well be wrong, it's not important if they are or not when I'm responding to the plot points that person posted.

They sound similar, they probably will be similar, how much so and how well they handle it is what will determine if the film is good or not. No need to be so patronizing about this.

Ehhh, people can bitch about ROTS shots as they please however the opening sequence to ROTS is still pretty epic to me. Especially after the the fighters fly below the starship and you see the scale of the battle going on.

I agree. I loved the whole opening sequence. The prequels have more than a few scenes that get by on just be really cool ideas. I was even starting to like Hayden's Anakin throughout the opening until he went all angsty after obi-wan was incapacitated.

Anybody who thinks that the prequels have nothing of value at all, that they were just George Lucas throwing silly shit at the screen for 6 hours, that there was no artistry or care put into it....

Just read the ring theory I guess, I don't know. That details things better than I could.

Oh I know there are plenty of prequel generation kids who looked past the faults and found the original movies.. I'm just thinking about the people that those movies screened out.

Plenty of people watched a prequel or two and said "no thanks I'm never getting into this dorky, kiddy crap" when they would have taken to it in the 80s or 90s.

I always think of my friend in the early 90s.. loved hardcore adult action movies and read Guns and Ammo magazine. Loved Star Wars. But if he came of age in the prequel generation I am sure he'd hate on it so hard. The prequels screened out iconoclasts: rebels and punks, jocks and gangsters... I think the geeky and thoughtful kids could look past the prequels, but it used to be a series with very broad appeal.

Talented artists can break the rules of shot composition if they understand them.

I wouldn't put GL in that camp...

Yep the Ring Theory is amazing stuff.

While I agree that a lot of people use Plinkett as a crutch for their own lack of an argument, it's not like people were praising the prequels before he came out with that. People were already commenting on the bland direction and empty visuals.

For me personally, yes there's a lot going on in that shot, but it's all fluff that doesn't really have much character to it. This type of futuristic, utopian city doesn't look lived in, nor is it anything that screams of its own identity; plenty of futuristic cities in different media look like Coruscant.

Meanwhile, the opening shot of the trailer has prominent storytelling purposes. It shows you the state of the previous war. It shows how unregulated and off-the-grid this planet is that a ship like this would just be left there. It even comments on the size of each side of the conflict with the small X-Wing contrasting the massive Star Destroyer. It also has Ren on her speeder, a small speck moving past all of this history towards her own path. Are there similar shots of giant downed ships in other media? Sure, but they aren't just used here because they look cool; they're quickly giving the audience pieces of the story without spelling it out through bland dialogue.

The Coruscant shot isn't bad or anything, but I do agree that this single shot shows there is a more competent filmmaker speaking to the audience visually.

Not our fault you can't back up your arguments.

To be honest when he said "the first two seconds" I took that quite literally and wasn't thinking about the downed Star Destroyer, just a shot of sand dunes, which have been done a billion times in Star Wars.

As it is, I think that shot of Anakin is pretty beautiful. The lighting is great, the set design is great, and I get a very good feel of what Anakin's internal conflict is like at that moment, staring out over the cityscape of Coruscant thinking about his conflicting loyalties, his nightmares about his dying wife, the toll of the war. The way the light slowly come on as Padme interrupts Anakin's brooding is also a nice touch which isn't captured in a still photo. ROTS is filled with a lot of scenes that use lighting for symbolism and mood, particularly evening and twilight shots. It's a very beautiful film and people ragging on it for visuals of all things just seem blind to me.

That particular shot immediately connected with me when I was 15 and it still does now. I felt for Anakin's situation.

edit: I also don't really understand people saying that it's a bad thing that the Coruscant skyline looks "utopian" as if that's a negative thing. He's in a senator's high-rise apartment in the capital district. Everything there will look beautiful. It's the facade of the civilized Republic. It's supposed to look that way.

While I agree that a lot of people use Plinkett as a crutch for their own lack of an argument, it's not like people were praising the prequels before he came out with that. People were already commenting on the bland direction and empty visuals.

People were pretty positive about ROTS, though. And it still has an 80% approval on RT. Higher than Jedi.

Since I don't read rumors or fansites, I feel at a disadvantage with the discussion in this thread, but I mostly enjoyed the trailer. My mildest complaints are that I don't like the zoom on the Tie Fighter and the Falcon (and there's a couple other filmmaking things, particularly lightning), I don't like the stormtrooper with the same expression on his face in this and the previous teaser and every other shot he's been in so far, and I'll be royally bummed if someone other than Solo pilots the Falcon.

But, for the most part, I just can't gather excitement for this. I grew up. I don't care about Star Wars all that much anymore. If they are better than the prequels, then that's great, but eh. Like every movie trailer I see, I hope we get a good movie regardless of the subject. And, other than maybe the first Star Trek movie (it's been a while), I don't like Abrams' style. I continue to find Lost (and particularly its fans) a joke. I think Into Darkness is terrible in its storytelling. I found Super 8 to be shameless and bankrupt as an exercise to rip off E.T. He's one of those people were I can sort of see why people like him, but I cannot understand why people think he is good. Then again, people conflate the two all the time, so whatever.

I hope it turns out well for everyone. It's odd seeing Ford seemingly care in a role for a few seconds. When was the last time THAT happened?

People were pretty positive about ROTS for a while, though. And it still has an 80% approval on RT.

I wouldn't say that one unanimously went down in opinion. Pretty much every ROTS thread has half the people arguing that it's better than ROTJ, while half says no way...

The only reason why people are ragging on it is because it doesn't fit into what they feel what Star Wars should be. I mean it's their opinion, but it's when another person says how much they like the Prequels they tend to start to get really nasty and toxic.

As for the new movie, I am looking forward to it. Hopefully they do some new stuff with it. It's too early to tell how it will turn out. Even if it's a retrend, I might complain but I wouldn't mind.

Most beautifully framed cinematography isn't just memorable for the imagery, but the context of the imagery. It's not that every shot in the original trilogy is outstanding, instead when it is gorgeous it's usually coupled with an iconic moment in the narrative or themes strongly associated with the story arc.

The prequel trilogy has plenty of wonderful looking scenes, stills, and sequences. But they tend to fall apart in your memory due to the forgettable context.

Like the ~1:15 long shot opening the battle over Coruscant. It's CGI wank and very busy, but intentionally so, has gorgeous colours, attractive framing that highlights scale of the ships, and conveys a sense of a chaotic war climax. The context is fine. But then it pans in on our protagonists, they open their mouths, and forgettable dialogue is delivered by wooden performances, and it's hard to give a shit from that point onwards no matter how nicely framed the shots are.

The cinematography here is outstanding:

But it's that cinematography combined with the context, Luke's first confrontation with Darth fucking Vader, that makes it memorable.

I don't think anything in the prequels is on the level of this trailer or the OT, but there are some parts that come close. The fight in Mustafar was already brought up, but I also think the Gungan city is worth a mention.
