Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Official Teaser Trailer #2

I know many people came of age with the prequels, and identify with them as their personal Star Wars experience.

My coworker, born in 1990, was recently telling me about how the prequels defined Star Wars for him, while the OT seemed somewhat outdated and campy.

I'm all for walking in others's shoes, seeing things from different perspectives. But hell, I'm sorry, I consider you prequel people a lost generation. A poor, warped, lost generation. May the Force have mercy on your souls.

some people just like visuals better than story/themes/etc...

My gf liked the OT, but she kept saying "the graphics suck", whereas no such comment was made for the prequels. But she is like that with everything (Tv, video games etc..)

But to be fair to your co-worker, some things from the OT are bad.
Something which I find important in the SW universe, lightsaber duels, was far superior in the prequels, in terms of choreography. Keep that 'powerful' bullshit out of this. Old Obi vs Vader, purely as a fight, sucked.

Luke vs Vader (Both times) are good though, they're not just standing still waving their stick at each other.

The teaser was fantastic. Great job. Couldn't create more hype.

Now ... All I'm going to do is this;

DONT KILL HAN! DONT KILL CHEWY! DONT KILL LUKE! DONT KILL LEIA!

I do wonder why Mark Hamill grew the Jedi-beard if it's not getting used in this movie. JJ might be deluding us.

one or more of those is so going to happen....

But I agree. Choreography overall was better in the prequels. That being said, Luke vs Vader at the end of Jedi is still my favorite.

I just saw that trailer the first time..

I honestly cried a little bit..

I am 40 years old now, and it seems this will finally the movie I wanted to see after leaving the cinema back in 1983, after watching Return of the Jedi...

Rey is the new Jedi. Quite possibly a Solo. Why would Leia and Han orphan their daughter is up to speculation.

Poe is what Wedge would've been if he hung out with the classic characters.

Finn is not a Jedi. He carries the lightsaber cause he wants to find its owner.

Kylo Ren possibly has some relation to Rey. Maybe he is her brother? Or Luke's son? The family drama is integral to Star Wars conflict so this is a likely possibility. It would also explain why Kylo is collecting Skywalker swag.

The Empire fell like Germany did in WW1, but it led to a fanatical Order like the Nazis in WW2. It has hints of modern global politics as they seem to resort to terror attacks on civilians which leads Finn to turn away.

i'm watching the first full trailer then its media blackout from that point.

JJ Abrams has totally nailed the aesthetic i can't wait i'm so excited. I'm a little worried that carrie fisher isn't going to be able to deliver. She didn't seem all there yesterday

Carrie Fisher hasn't been all there since the mid 80's.

What's up with the Game of Thrones level "speculation" in this thread? There's a lot of shit known about the movie, and some posters are really making me frown with the things being said. Many tout "speculation" but damn do some things come eerily close. I think a few people have brought up the issue in the spoiler thread.

Note I'm not talking about any posters in particular. ;)

i already anticipated people will.

But besides that scene, the majority is good.

It might. It might not. Would make me break down in tears, thats for sure.

Still can't believe it's been 32(!) years since we've seen the OT cast. 32 years of waiting. Thats the reason I'm against them
killing of an OT character so soon.

O well. There's plenty of "leaks". Most of them are fake.

One of the things I noticed when watching the trailer on a bigger screen is that ... there's actually a load of people standing behind Kylo Ren. No, not the Stormtroopers. The close-up shot of him Force-pushing/choking something ... residents of the village?

Only one is really a Skywalker woman out of all of those. Padme certainly doesn't represent a force (or potential force) user. These are more the leading ladies.

To be fair Leia never took the name Skywalker either.

I have to be honest i'm hoping for an early departure for her. That will allow han and chewie to get back on the scene picking up chicks in the falcon

I wonder if Chewie has been playing awkward third wheel this whole time.

Yeah the fight choreography in the prequels was extremely high quality. Darth Maul's footwork is god tier. But I say that not to mean that it was a good choice to include all the crazy bullshit. They went overboard with the number and duration of fights, and characters like Yoda never should have picked up a lightsaber to begin with. Same with the Emperor.

Not sure if it's spoilers to post that, but yeah. The casting here is great.

I'm 29 years old.

When I was 4 ... my dad shoved something called Star-Wars in my face. Started with A New Hope and finished that same day with Jedi. Repeated the thing myself the next day.

Loved-every-fucking-second of it. And still do.

When I was 13, news on the internet got out that Episode 1 was coming. We watched the trailer on a shitty connection and in piss-poor quality. Loved it. After that ... I was hooked once more.

Although my dad and I agree that Episode 1, 2 and 3 are no where near the OT movies ... they are still highly entertaining.

Now, 10 years after ROTS ... we get The Force Awakens. My dad watched the trailer and send me a text saying : "That ... was fucking awesome. Goosebumps all over. But ... whats the story about?!"

Could not answer that.

Now... enough of the emo-stuff. I'm now 29 years old. Blessed with a beautiful wife, a son and a baby-girl coming up ... Couldn't be more happier :)

Star Wars makes you feel all kinds of shit!

I totally agree with this.

Geeky out with my dad and son is one of the best things about new Star Wars.

While some people most assuredly followed spoilers and fake their speculations, it's not like at it's core Star Wars is a complex tale. I haven't seen any of the spoilers (
well, someone in this thread spoiled that the caped Stormtrooper is probably Gwendoline Christie
) but I think even with only random bits and pieces being shown you can deduce at least some plot points.

I wonder if Chewie has been playing awkward third wheel this whole time.

According to Gary Kurtz, even as late as during the making of Empire, Leia wasn't a Skywalker. Luke's sister was meant to be a character introduced in the third film. It seems Lucas wanted to replicate the family reveal moment that punctuated Empire so well. That along with redoing the Death Star sequence with an unlimited budget.

never a truer word said.

I really don't want to see a load of lightsaber wankery

Doesn't make it any less bit of a shitty thing to do to people, lol.

Now I want to watch all the Star Wars films, which I have right here on DVD.

Ha, that makes more sense about the kiss Luke and Leia have then.

Oh obviously not, it's still incredibly assholish. If someone posts in spoiler thread and goes into non-spoiler thread speculating you could probably report him to a mod, at least in case of Game of Thrones it's a bannable offense.

As far as the new choreo goes, I'm looking forward to what Iko, Yayan, and Cecep bring. Even if it's only for a single scene, I hope their influence stands out.

edit: dudes from the Raid if people don't know them by name.

Stupid question... who are the bad guys this time?

The evil organisation is the 'First Order' which seems to be the remnants of the Empire led by a new Sith.

Regarding the fight choreography, it was excellent in Phantom Menace. They were over the top but still felt punchy, plus it was the actual actors doing the moves. Clones and Sith didn't really work for me because they involved stunt men with CGI Christopher Lee heads fighting a tennis ball on a stick, or were so intricately designed that they felt like dances rather than fights. Too much leaping around, seeing Palpatine flip off a wall was something we never needed to see. Doesn't help that McDiarmid had no real experience of swordfighting, it made the Windu fight really feeble.

Still can't believe it's been 32(!) years since we've seen the OT cast. 32 years of waiting.

I'm 30, not exactly a baby, and yet these characters have never been active on screen in my lifetime.

I think that's the reason seeing Han at the end of the trailer shocked me nearly to tears. And I know it's such a cheap and easy way to deliver thrills ("bring back old beloved character = $$$"), and I knew it was coming! But.... it worked. It really did.

It's like seeing an old relative who died before you met them knock on your front door. I was introduced to them as if they were a legend. You're not supposed to meet long gone legends.

For most of my relatively long life... I never expected to see these characters on screen ever again. Han Solo was someone who existed before I was born, and it was never implied to me that I would see them again. He wasn't meant to exist in the present reality, right in front of me.... so seeing it? It shocked me in a surprising way.

It's funny, because Indiana Jones 4 didn't do that. That was more like me thinking as a fan or like a director. "Is he Indiana Jones still? Yeah he kind of is.... good job Harrison. I hope new audiences respond to him". But something about seeing Han was more visceral....

Try again.

There are some really beautiful shots in the prequels, like visually impressive, but none of them are iconic frames that stick with you.

Probably because a lot of the best shots in the OT had amazing environmental, natural lighting.

Almost everything in the prequels is CG and more often than not, just look soulless.

They evil organisation is the 'First Order' which seems to be the remnants of the Empire led by a new Sith.

I don't know why, but I get the feeling that the 'First Order' is going to be somewhat more doctrinal and dogmatic than the OT's Empire. I found the line very fascinating from Ep IV when an officer mocks Vader's "religion"

https://youtu.be/Zzs-OvfG8tE?t=1m17s

I'm sort of seeing this new Empire as the East Roman Empire or the Holy Roman Empire to the original Roman Empire. In the OT the empire seems very Ideological and concerned with politics. Even though a Sith Lord sat at the top. The impetus is clearly dogmatic on ushering the clarity of the dark side. But to do so the Empire heavily relied on bringing down the democratic system from the core and bootstrapping itself to existing infrastructure.

In the collapse of the Empire, I see a much stronger Sith presence in this "First Order"

I always got the feeling that fighting with lightsabers in the prequals was a dangerous places to be, where as in the OT it was very clearly meant to be a physical manifestation of the mental battle going on. Visually the prequals were better in that respect, but I didn't get the impression that there was much of a "mental battle" between Darth Maul and Mark Renton.
