Problem is, the quality of the shadows outside the "detail aura" is influenced by the shadow quality setting and especially by the detailed (highres) shadow setting AND the extendet shadow distance slider.
If you start using the extendet shadow distance slider, you will loose shadow quality outside this little radius. But thats just how it works, you have to find your balance.
Also, this is one of the things that makes PC gaming so great and also somewhat terrible. On consoles you get whatever devs try to push for, on PC you have to make choices.
Some users in here complained that it doesnt run at a stable 60FPS on their awesome system that they paid so much money for...well even the most highend system does not guaranty you a stable framerate, not just because of optimization but because some settings are just crazy and should be marked as an insane extra.
I am talking about the grass quality on ultra in combination with high resolution shadows here especially, of course almost any system chokes when you force it to render very highres shadows from every single patch of grass over a large distance. This is nothing surprising really, you can go for it but should be prepared for the consequence.
