GTA V PC Performance Thread

This game has to have some sort of memory leak. I played for about an hour tonight, and when I started I was at about 5.2 GB RAM usage, and towards the end of my play session I was hitting 7GB! Slight stuttering started towards the end as well.

Has anyone running 8GB RAM added more RAM with positive results? I'm assuming this has to be a bug, 7GB system RAM is insane!

been playing with textures on very high lately

virtually no real hit on performance from high, but that article about fluidity was right. there's a certain stutter that wasnt there before, kinda like very little mini freezes from time to time

guessing those might come when it spikes and exceeds vram

game has crashed on me once after using them too

I've been using vh textures since the beginning on my 670 2gb and it seems fine. My vram is always full though. Might be I just don't notice any stutters. Currently the game itself is saying I need 2.35gb.

I only notice problems when I use settings that "need" over 2.5gb. I get 1 freeze where my framerate drops to the teens every 5-10 mins if I do that.

i5 2400

8GB Ram

I messed with settings for awhile, but settled on everything high plus FXAA. I had to drop population diversity down to stay under my video ram cap. Fps was 60 but would get stuck at 45fps and dip to mid 30s from time to time. So i locked it at 30fps. Game looks good.

after a looong session started to get snow-like artifacts on screen, damn

exited the game, restarted and it's fine. guessing my gpu was overheating. gonna re-set the custom fan curves

first time anything like that has happened

Can confirm that running Very High textures with a 2GB card (a 670 in my case) is ok. After 22 hours playing with them, speeding on the highway from the country side all the way to downtown, flew planes all across the city and mountain side and not a single stutter or sudden big frame drop in my experience.

All of that while the in game memory bar shows ~2360MB/2048MB, while the highest VRAM usage the RTSS reported was something like ~1900MB.

Andys working on it, its a huge time sink with so many settings + open world variables + having to restart. He hasnt given an eta but this coming week seems likely

There will be one and it's still being worked on. There isn't a deadline but keep an eye out for it, due to the extent of the options it's taking some time.

Yeah, having all those options is great and something that R* should be applauded for doing but it makes the jobs of poor guys like Andy hard.

The having to completely restart the game to change some settings was a big pain in the ass though, that's why I stopped after I found my initial sweet spot of settings and just started playing, I could've experimented some more and compared different combinations but having to restart the damn game every time killed my interest and that's why I'm waiting for the guide to base some changes (if I need or want to) on its findings and results since I already have 60fps %95 of the time.

Same thing with my 770, the highest reported VRAM usage I've seen is around 2GB or so, with very high textures. The only major issue is Post FX, because setting to high improves performance by a huge amount, but also gets rid of depth of field (and I'm sure DOF isn't the main resource hog, considering you can turn it off manually when using very high post fx and it doesn't make a large difference in performance).

Game may have a memory leak either software related or due to PC configuration. A lot of people have reported it. R* Support
When I start the game RAM is at 4.2GB. By an hour or so it's close to 7GB. It then begins to stutter. I shut the game down and re-start. Hopefully this will get fixed.
Yeesh. I only have 8GB RAM. I hope they do fix it. I wonder if it's related to the issue I had-- some kind of weird error "ERRGFXD3D_INIT" that happened an hour into the game and wouldn't stop until I rebooted my PC.

yup, posted something like that before

it's a fucking bummer that DoF is tied to the very high post-FX setting, cause the framerate hit is heavy but I like the DOF too much

Soooo turning DOF on cause this for me...

I mean, perhaps the DoF is causing the huge hit. Even when its disabled, very high has a dof effect applied, just not as liberally.

Crashing every 5-10 min sounds like maybe a memory issue? Crashing to desktop? Any windows messages when it happens? You do have a page file correct?
No error messages. Just says that the program stopped working, then Social Club force logs me out and says that I was logged in from somewhere else. I haven't touched any page file settings yet though so I'm using whatever defaults windows 8 has.

I'll try running in compatibility windows 7 mode + with admin rights when I get the chance. Read about it just now in the pc gaming wiki site to help with the crashes.

I lowered my MSAA down to 2x and most of my stuttering problems are gone. I did lock up once after a long mission during a save. That sucked.

2 GB of VRAM simply doesn't cut it in this game. No matter how many other settings I lower, I always run into the VRAM limit on my 770 when choosing High or Very High textures. My frames are rarely an issue, but massive stuttering happens when running into the VRAM max.

It's really a shame. We're in the era of 3-4 GB being the minimum for VRAM - not recommended or ultra spec. It also sucks that 4 GB cards have only recently become a thing (with some exceptions) and the prices have only now become affordable. I hate buying future proof on cards because it tends to get very expensive, very fast. It's also my fault for not thinking ahead, but jesus. I didn't expect to hit such a brick wall in this game and have to lower the textures down to something that looks 360/PS3 (dare I say PS2?) level. It's an open world game and that's gonna chew VRAM, but come on.

Guess we'll see how The Witcher 3 fares. I'm expecting more disappointment.

EDIT: Also I didn't run into this problem with AC Unity. It hits video memory pretty hard too, though I was at least able to run High textures with minimal/no stuttering. Then again, it's not as big as GTA and probably not streaming a comparable variety of texture data. Still looks better and runs better!

Future in almost every sense I've had had been buy the x80 version of whatever Nvidia has and you'll easily be good for 2 years. 680 was like that and then 780. Gotta future proof better :P.

Did anyone notice worse performance after the latest update? I seem to be getting drops to mid 40 at the most random location. Going in any type of shop also drops it to 30 for a second or so.
When doing a trevor mission I also discovered that zooming in on plants with a sniper rifle severely tanks it, I know that the high vegetation and very high shadows cause frame rate to tank due to all the plants having their own shadow, but wouldn't this be rendered regardless whether or not you've zoomed in on it.

Exactly my issue

Yeah, I'm wondering if they did something with the post-processing that made it much more of a performance drainer.

I was able to fix most of my memory crashes by enabling the page file.

No. I'm playing this with a GTX 560 1GB at 1440p medium textures without problems.

I did notice that after every time I play this game my screensaver stops working. I have to change screensavers in order to get it working again. Odd.

I don't know how some can claim this to be Rockstar's best PC port because man, the crashes happen more frequently than something like Battlefield 4

Battlefield is not made by rockstar and you must not have experienced any other GTA game since 3 at launch or within a year cause none of them performed this well.

Some of us aren't crashing for a variety of reasons both related to versions we buy or the hardware/software we use. Same for how much we tinker I've had various problems but most of my crashes were self induced or relating to the online mode, which didn't work so well at console launch either.

I was just comparing it to BF4 because that was another game I've been having random crash issues. Performance wise, the game runs great and I'm not complaining there. I just wish I could stop the game from crashing randomly.

Will have to look into adjusting page file settings since many suggest that too as a fix.

Anyone with a single Titan X ? What settings are you using? I can't achieve steady 60FPS without turning a ton of things down. Grass on Very High still feels like a killer, Post Process and shadows. (1080p still)

Man I am pretty pissed off on this game.

I had it running pretty well at 60fps with drops on a single 980 card when I lowered a handful of settings. I decided to go ahead and spend $600 on a second 980 to SLI to be able to play w/o drops and some good AA/max settings.

The game runs worse in SLI. I got two of the exact same cards and in other games I'm testing the performance increase is there and benchmarking is looking fine. But in GTAV with SLI on I get this HORRIBLE stutter that feels like the game is chugging and struggling to load the next object every second. Doesn't matter what settings I use, low or high. I can set MSAA off and everything to low and it runs exactly the same.

Then I quit out and disable SLI and try again and it's buttery smooth. I googled around and it seems like this SLI stuttering is something that some people are getting (and seems to be a problem with SLI on some games), but no one has a fix yet.

Guess I'm going to have to play with SLI disabled and hope Nvidia puts out a patch fixing this unplayable stuttering in 980 SLI. This is my first time going SLI and not a good experience. At least other games seem to be running a lot nicer with SLI and I can do 4k downsampling on other stuff.

Just played for three hours (longest session yet by a good hour and a half) and just as I was thinking about quicksaving I hit the RMB and the game crashes -_- oh well.

I haven't actually heard many problems with SLI on this particular game and I'm on 2x GTX 780 SLI and it has been a really great smooth experience with good scaling. It'll be interesting to know what in particular is causing SLI issues with some people and not others (who are getting the intended results).

I'm on a G1 titan, and i'm using the nvidia optimized settings (except shadows, which i put to softest) and my average is mid 40s.

I'm curious to know what to do, to get 60 on a more regular basis.

I have a Titan X and I'm running most of the time at 4K at 60FPS.

Shadow: High
Soft Shadow: Softer
Grass: High

Everything else should be Very High. No AA.

All the options under Advanced Graphics is turned off (at the moment).

Does the 200mb patch download ok now for RSC version, or does it repeatedly fail like the 350mb was doing for many users like me? Did they include file checker for integrity this time.

I've got everything maxed except for shadows, which are at high, and MSAA, which is at 2X as well as reflection MSAA. I get a solid 60 FPS 95% of the time. There are some drops to the 50's when in heavy traffic. I think turning down population density would fix that, but it hasn't bothered me enough yet to do so.

This is at 1080p. I feel like I will be able to get away with no AA or just FXAA when I get a 1440p monitor.

I can confirm that 2GB of VRAM is enough for running textures on very high (and most other settings to at least high, i have nothing on "normal") and still have a steady 60fps with no drops at all (1080p).

Tested on my GTX960. The in-game VRAM bar is exceeded by around 100MBs but after a while playing the game the hardware monitor utility reports maximum VRAM usage at around 95%. My CPU is a i5 4670 and i have plenty of system RAM (16GB).

I need to test again with Afterburner though.

I play at 1440p on a single Titan X and stay in the 70's to 90's. Everything maxed except the Advanced Graphics. Besides the high quality streaming while flying those are best turned off.

What's your CPU?

Ive noticed precision x, geforce experience and origin all conflict with sli on my 780ti's. Try disabling any program with an osd and you should get better sli performance.

This latest patch has really screwed the pooch for me. I am running:

i5-4690K
2x EVGA GTX 980 SC
16gb (2x8gb) DDR3-1866
850 EVO 250gb SSD x2

Anyways, the game runs fantastic at 1440p60fps+ with most everything maxed (MSAA 2x + FXAA, post-processing at very high, grass on very high, shadows on softest).

However, the pause menu, and specifically the map, stutters like there's no tomorrow. Also, if I alt+tab of out of the game and leave it in the background, text input lags pretty hard (delay between key press and letter appearing on the screen). Closing GTA V makes everything go back to normal.

Even more oddly, when returning to the pause menu in GTA V from having alt-tabbed to the destkop, the map works fluidly without stutter. Once I dismiss the menu and bring it back, the stutter happens all over again.

To reiterate, the game itself runs 100% smoothly. It's the pause menu that is a terrible stuttery mess.

Also, I had my first crash to desktop after the patch. Played tens of hours before the patch, and never had a crash. Post-patch I got one crash to desktop.

:/ rockstar plz.

Great. It's CTD every time during the first single player heist mission. When Franklin comes out of the tunnel on his bike and the game switches to Michael, it crashes 3-5 seconds later. I've no idea why, but that mission takes a good 10 minutes or so to get to that point. Sigh....and everything was going so well up until that point.

Anyone able to give me opinions on how this would run on my rapidly ageing laptop please?

i7 3630qm
GTX 660m
8gb RAM.

Reckon I'd beat PS4 visuals and performance? I'm toying with the idea of rebuying the ps4 version, but the PC version might be an option. Thanks GAF

Just to add to this. I've realised the crash occurs, and this is only during this mission as well, whenever I try to aim my weapon on a vehicle. I can reproduce this crash as soon as I change over to Franklin on the bike fleeing from the jewellery store. Anyone encountered this and is there a fix?

Just ram the cop cars don't shoot.
At the next mission get a weapon selected and shoot it before entering the car.
