Avengers: Age of Ultron |OT| If you open this thread, you're an Avenger

Some of the impressions in this thread beg to differ, and friends who watched the movie last night said it didn't do Spader justice.

The only explanation I can come up with is that it might not be what people were expecting, based on the trailers. Spader steals almost every scene he's in. I say almost because he does have some scenes with
the Vision, and he's the absolute best thing in this movie.

I haven't seen many people talking about Vision, does he not show up until the very end?

Possible spoilers,
he's "informally" introduced in the halfway mark but is fully revealed around the two thirds mark. He gets a good introduction before everyone moves toward the full scale final battle.

He is really, really good but I wish we got more of him. His presence is great.

Veering off topic here, but grade curving is such a stupid idea. You either know the material or you don't. Whether other people know it shouldn't matter to your score.

Well, for my university, it was mainly used because a large number of professors didn't have a firm grasp on what sorts of problems were appropriate for the level of the class. The curve gave them something to aim for (most would aim for a 50% average and then do a distribution from there).

I feel that this would probably be a good model for a lot of movie critics. Give average movies an average score of 5/10 so movie-goers can get a better idea of what the numbers actually mean.

He was a fun character who despite having little screen time managed to be memorable. People always mention the set piece but even before that happened the audience I watched it with was into every scene he was in. It was a nice tease for his (apparently) bigger role in Apocalypse.
I'm not insinuating that he was a bad character, far from it but I wouldn't have said that aside from the set-piece he was a standout character.

Never doubted Spader. The only thing that can stop him is bad writing.
Another fun round of 'guess the post history' guys, have at it!

And some of them say he is one of the best parts of the movie. Why are you only counting the negative ones?

Because I didn't have particularly high hopes for the movie to begin with, and I've been hearing this from people who have similar taste in movies to myself. Admittedly I probably care more for James Spader than the rest of the cast combined, so how strong of a villain he is and the writing the actor is given is important (to me).

What now? I've talked about wanting Marvel to have better villains for a while now.

It was just a little joke, don't worry. A joke drawn from the Flash avatar and predominantly posting in Arrow/Flash threads aside from when you're saying something negative about a Marvel property.

It's just something I quickly do before I take people's comments too seriously and I'm pretty sure there's a running joke here of reposting people's avatars in DC/Marvel threads. It's clear that you didn't have high hopes to begin with and waded into these threads to utter the confirmation of your fears despite their being more comments about Spader being good than bad but you take those bad ones as correct because of your previously established opinion.

Thus the implication of the joke was that your posting history and avatar create the general 'stereotype' - for want of a better word - of the people who dislike Marvel properties.

Though you may not, it was just a joke.

Something negative about a Marvel property? What have I been saying that's negative lately other than commenting about weak villains and trailers (and I believe I clarified trailers don't represent the final film). I'm pretty sure I said Daredevil was the best thing Marvel has done to date too. Seems you're reading into a stereotype. If you wanted to be more precise, I'm critical of Marvel Studios rather than Marvel properties. I've mentioned many times I really like the X-Men film series and the non-amazing Spider-Man films.

I also mentioned that I'd been talking with friends who did watch the movie last night, and not this thread. I'm more likely to trust people who have tastes I'm well aware of than people on GAF who I don't know very well. I'll see the movie next week and see for myself but until then from what I've heard it sounds like Ultron will disappoint me.

Tell that to schools. It's exactly how the grading scale works and I don't see the problem applying it to games and movies. 6/10 is 60%. There is not way I consider that 'good'

movies, music, and games are subjective works of art, not answers on an exam. there is no concrete "right" way to make a movie, or "wrong" way to make a song.

the best you can do is aggregate reviews, and pay attention to the ones that most closely align with your personal tastes.

if 8/10 reviewers think the movie is "good", the odds are better that the average person will enjoy it more than a movie that only rates 3/10, but by no means is the 8/10 always a better movie than the 3/10.

this is ESPECIALLY true for comedies, which rarely seem to get a majority of reviewers to agree on what is or is not "funny" and worth seeing.

Did I not say that's what the joke was? You took me too seriously, dude. Sorry if it came off the wrong way.

At my University 60% if a 2:1, 70% is a first and anything above that is excellent work.

That we can agree on. Loki is (besides Fisk) the only interesting Marvel MCU villain to this day and to me he was a big part of why I enjoyed the first Avengers as much as I did. The only saving grace is that the rest of the Marvel movies are usually good and fun enough that it doesn't bring them down too much but they really need to do something about the throwaway "look at me I'm so evil" antagonists.

Tickets bought for me and two friends! This Saturday, reserved seats, non-dubbed, 2D session. Best. Wanted to go this Friday instead but one of them wasn't available.

For those who have seen it already... what did you think of Iron Man, Cap and Thor? They somewhat surprisingly haven't been mentioned too much in the reviews.

Cap and Thor don't really do a lot outside of action scenes, but they still get moments to shine. Tony is featured heavily, and is probably the best he's been since the first Iron Man. He's far less annoying than he appears in the marketing.

Ideally, I'd hope Black Panther's Villain is Man-Ape and we can truly get a writer to do him justice.

I can tell you right now
it's probably going to be Klaw.

Just came from the midnight premiere. I thought the movie was fantastic and quite better than the first. The new characters are all great, Vision steals the show (even though I think he is a bit underused).

I thoroughly enjoyed this, my wife was slightly more disappointed as "they spend a lot of the movie talking, felt like a sequel instead of awesome like the first one"

Some spoilery commentary:
  • Vision was excellent, and had an amazing intro
  • Falcon was left out of the final fight scene, but everyone else rocked up? Was kinda explained at the party, but still felt like a cop-out, especially since he joined the new lineup at the end
  • Felt a bit like Game of Thrones for a while, with so many stories being flicked between. I imagine this will be a lot smoother with the extended scenes added in
  • Bruce Banner + Natasha were most captivating characters for me, their plot was excellent and had enough twists to be interesting
  • Cap felt a bit shortchanged story-wise, seemed to mostly be there as setup for Civil War. His fear nightmare was never really addressed?
  • The amount of dirty jokes and references in this movie, holy cow. "Find the zucchini" and Natasha flirting at the bar were quite a surprise to me
  • Ultron only got 3-4 forms, after his rapidly upgrading pace at the start I was expecting to see more crazy changes along the way
  • Hahahaha the ending shot of the movie itself was the best troll I've ever seen. "Avengers, ..." Really like the new lineup at the end as well, felt like the new guard had arrived.

Just keep in mind that the first really isn't a high bar to clear. Posted my impressions a few pages back.

I'm with Sculli on this.

I enjoyed this more than the first, but I also don't consider the first film anything special.

As I said in my massive wall of text a few pages back:

The Avengers = 7/10

AoU = 8/10

Except that's one man's opinion.

Quicksilver in this was pretty good, but he didn't have a "DoFP kitchen scene equivalent", that's for sure.

I'm still so conflicted by DoFP Quicksilver. Like yeah, it's a bomb ass scene and probably the highlight of that movie so I can't say I didn't enjoy it thoroughly. However, he's still OP as fuck and breaks the plot of the movie. Thing is, I don't even think he was too powerful when compared to his comicbook counterpart. It's just that everyone in the X-men franchise apart from Wolverine is nerfed to hell and back when it comes to their powers.

Spader is Jesus. He's amazing and I'm so excited to check him out as Ultron. Vision looks amazing. So hyped. Two questions and I'll spoiler them jic (yes no answers pls):

Is there anything as big or close to the magnitude of TWS's twist?

Anything involving Black Panther?

Remember YES or NO

No, and only a brief mention of something related.
