Is Street Fighter 4 the best fighting game of all time?

Personally I think Skullgirls is one of the best fighting games ever, at least here in the West. I haven't played enough Street Fighter to compare, but I think what I love most about Skullgirls is that it's friendly towards people who are just starting to get into fighting games. The tutorials are just stellar, not only will it teach you the basic and advanced techniques, but it has a tutorial for every single character in the game. Just the other day I was doing a tutorial for one of my mains and I discovered moves that I didn't even know I could do before.

Character designs are great as well of course, plus there's a lot of nods and references to a whole bunch of shit just through the alternate costumes.

Yes, Ultra Street Fighter IV is the best fighting game of all time.

With that being said, there are a ton of other great fighting games out there.

Not my fave but it undoubtedly has the largest and most consistent competition of any fg ever. Like 7 years old and still going strong internationally.

Between Guilty Gear XX Accent Core+ and Marvel vs Capcom 2 for me (Darkstalkers 3 and Tekken Tag 2 are honorable mentions), but SF4 is good. I wouldn't say it's my favorite game in the series but it grew on me a lot over the years.

I'm aware of that. Not sure why that's something to bring up though.

I thought the OP was JUST talking about SF4 which to me Sagat was pretty much the only counter you needed to consider that game the best fighting game of all time.

Still, even if we're talking about all versions of 4, I consider the core mechanics of 3 superior. Plus, I'm always a sucker for sprites.

I hate people who say this.

The only genre it saved was people who play Capcom games exclusively.

Yeah because the scene was really blossoming before SFIV right?

I mean, SFIV brought fighting games to a much wider audience which caused the explosion in the scene we see today. It may be a combination of that and streaming technology/platforms becoming mainstream as well which was good timing, but still. There's a reason it is still the most popular game today.

Edit: I'm talking pure impact, not necessarily in terms of mechanics.

Super SF4 is by far the best version of the series. and yes, it is also the best fighting game of all time. this and dark souls are the two games i always install immediately after a disk format. they will always have a place in my hard drive.

Not even best SF..

3rd Strike > SSF2T > Alpha 3 > SF2HF > USF4 > everything else.

Not counting Vs games btw.

Whatever, this argument is tired.

SF4 is jesus of fighting games. There were none released after CvS2 and before SF4. You're right.

Remarkably balanced for the size of its roster, diverse cast, complex while retaining accessibility. It's a valid claim, I think. Maybe not *the* best, but there's a reason it's as popular and resilient to age as it is.

It probably isnt, but its definitely in the conversation. That conversation includes

Super Turbo
Garou
3rd Strike
VF 4 Evolution
Super Smash Melee
Soul Calibur II
USF IV
KoF 98

... and a few others, Im sure. SF IV is a very important game, its very accessible and very tournament friendly which is a requirement for any game vying for the title of "the best"

It's arguably up there depending on what you consider.

Edit: It's key in these type of threads to ignore certain comments like "not even close" "worst than 5 random examples" etc..

''Is Street Fighter 4 the best fighting game of all time''?...

SFIII: 3rd Strike and SNK fighters are far more advance than SFIV,can't for the life of me figure out why they went back to trash mechanics with SFIV. Especially after 3rd Strike was masterpiece, but I guess it must of been to advance the Guile turtlers in SFIV to handle lol.

A close second after Street Fighter 3rd Strike. I think SF4 caters to noobs a little too much.
Lolwut?????

I am what you'd call a fighting game noob and trust me, SF4 does not cater to me any more than SF3 does. You know what fighting game caters to noobs? Smash Bros.

Street Fighter 4 is just too technical and complex for anyone to say it caters to noobs (try explaining to a casual the two power meters, the difference between the two and how to use them, I dare you).

Because Guile turtlers are totally dominating the pro scene right?

Super Turbo based on nostalgia but i would go for TTT2 personally.
Depends on the day which one i bring up.

Alpha 3, even with stupid vism, is my favorite. So much variety in that game

SF4 is ok. It does cater to noobs a lot, which is understandable if they want new blood. SF3 was an awful series with its parry mechanic

I like 3rd Strike and Vampire Savior (and the other Darkstalkers game) more. I think TTT2 is the best 3D fighter to date.

3rd Strike being so loved is something I'll never understand.

It's nice looking yes, but it really hurt the scene. Parrying is awful.

Third Strike was the fighting genre's life support for almost a decade. Arcades dying is what almost killed fighting games.

Best to worst SF

3rd Strike
Alpha 2
Super Turbo
SF4
Alpha 3
SF The Movie The Game

SF4 went too far backwards.
It removed any type of metered defensive option like Alpha Counters.
The walk speed is incredibly slow making dancing in and out of range and whiff punishing annoying
Normals are too weak
Combo are strict, reversals are not
Can't special cancel rapid firs jabs
"unblockable" crossup glitch
Game isn't accessible at all, it's less complicated than A3 though.
Introduced El Fuerte
My biggest issue is everyone feeling really rote or color by numbers. Everyone feels so weak and meh.

But let's pretend FGs were dead because Capcom didn't make Street Fighter in a while while everyone else did.

People are elitist and are going to claim whatever they like is the best, anyway.

IMO, 3rd Strike was great, but I think there were some problems that definitely hurt my enjoyment of the game. Additionally, I think SF4 series aced it in just about any category aside art and certain character varieties, and I don't even remember SF3 being the hype until the Daigo stunt.

Personally, if you were to average out the good and bads of every similar 2D fighting game, SFIV would only lose to maybe Garou, which was an incredible fighter

Not even. I also disagree with the animation statement. It's not that great.

And I don't have a specific title, because there's a lot of great games out there.

2X, Zero2, and 3rd Strike are all better than any incarnation of SF4 - and that's just in it's own series. I'd say GGXXAC, VF3/4/5, Samurai Spirits 2/4, MOTW, Tekken 3/6, TTT, KOF98/2k2/11/13, Last Bronx, SoulCalibur, Vampire Savior, and Tobal 2 are the best the genre has to offer.

I give SF4 props for being the right game at the right time though.
