Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Yeah, the notes for it were posted earlier. You thinking about kicking the GAF server over to unstable?

No one's really noticed, but the GAF server has been down for the last few days, since hardly anyone has popped on. So... yeah, might switch to Unstable for a while. The Stable saves wouldn't be purged or anything, so I can always jump back to that when needed.

Bit busy with Bloodborne though, so might do that over the weekend. :P

Server will go up in the morning, since I'm currently running on unstable, and I'm also currently doing other things, so will not be able to get it up till tommorrow morning anyway. I'll put up a post to let you guys know its up.

Alright, server is up? I think. Seems to work fine locally, but I need someone to be a guinea pig to test if you guys can actually connect.
I'm also currently combing through the thread now to find the coordinates to GAFworld, but if someone know off hand what it is, please post it.

Quote this post for server info, in case you're too lazy to go to the 1st post. The info hasn't changed since the last time the server was up, in case you were wondering.

Getting connection timeouts.

Odd? Retro is on. Try it again?

EDIT: Ok, some testing has revealed that GAFWorld may have been corrupted. I'm going to wipe the universe and make a new one.
WHILE THIS MAY SEEM BAD, they did add new stuff, so redoing the universe isn't a bad thing (and I was gonna do it anyway). I'll update this post when its ready.

Ok...so my older character, more developed character can't seem to connect.

Ok, try again ONE MORE TIME.

For some reason, when I made the new universe, it wouldn't let anyone in until I started single player and beam down to the starter planet. I can confirm it works now because just chatted with Retro (who's currently entering OCD mode now and has started building).

EDIT: I keep seeing you trying to login... not sure why you can't. Try using the Guest access?

EDIT2: Ok ok, nevermind. Server is being taken down until I figure out what the hell is going on. Sorry folks.

EDIT3: BTW Do you have any mods on your character? For some reason, the server always seems to lock up when you attempt to connect? :p

Vanilla.

This is me trying to connect with a developed character. I tried with a fresh char and it let me in. I can try again with a fresh clean char.

Welcome to GAFworld.

Started working on the spawn base (it will be much smaller than last time), but needed to take a break for dinner and i will need to find a glitch castle to stripmine.

Server's running fine for me, hardly any lag.

Quick question tho, what's the restriction for guests?

Also, any blocks/stuff I need to save up for GAF HQ construction? (Where do you find concrete blocks anyway?)

Rules/restrictions are as follows:

If you have a guest on the server, PM me to let me know who it is.
Never tell the guest the GAF password, give them the Guest one.
IF your guest wants to invite someone, they can, but I need to know.
You are responsible for any bad/stupid/evil things the guest does.
You are responsible for any bad/stupid/evil things your guest's guests do.

And not really a guest rule, but general rules for everyone:
Don't vandalize the server.
Don't destroy buildings/structures.
Don't take furniture that's NOT in a chest.
Don't modify/improve/add-on to an existing structure without permission.

The server is there for us to let out our creativity and show off what we can build/create. Obviously, not all of us can be as insanely OCD as Retro, but we generally won't mind if you try to attempt a build on the server. Bear in mind, aesthetics are key. If your structure looks out of place (like smack dab in the middle of a bunch of nice really looking stuff), then yeah, I might have to have a word with you. Digging massive holes all over the place is also bad.

The server is also there if you want easy to get items. I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU TAKE STUFF SPARINGLY. This is a grindy type of game, and the fun in it is the stuff you get from the grind. That being said if something is in a chest, and NOT on a player ship, then its free to take for anyone.
KEEP THAT IN MIND. DON'T KEEP IMPORTANT ITEMS ON THE SERVER.
You can also drop off spare items on the server if you're feeling generous.

Oh one more thing, you don't necessarily have to play on the server to just build, you're allowed to explore/grind on the server too. I do ask that if you do land on a new planet, plop a sign/torch/something down to let us know that someone has been there. Its generally fairly easy for one person to get most of the easy to reach items on a planet, so for those of us who are trying to find items, it saves us time.

My suggestion is do what I do, plop a torch at your landing zone. This way when someone else lands, they see a torch, and they just back off unless they want to dig.

And if people need stuff, I'm the one to ask. I generally give away a ton of stuff / drop it off on GAFWorld.

Rules/restrictions are as follows:

Not on the list and not really rules, but good frontiersmanship (it's a word, look it up);
- Chop down a tree? Plant a sapling.
- Need to get across a gap or up a cliff? Don't leave a giant 1x1 bridge of off-colored dirt.

Basically, don't stripmine planets of all their visible resources. If you can even manage to pass undetected (replace any minerals you dig up with dirt), that will preserve the planet for future explorers even if there's no coal

And yes, a Torch at spawn is a great policy to at least show "Someone has been here". I would love it if we had editable signs (not the ones you can craft at the Outpost) that let us leave markers for who explored what and when.

Obviously, not all of us can be as insanely OCD as Retro

Hey, I resemble that remark. I need to dig up a few more furniture objects and then I'll get the GAF base finished. I just got my ship done though.

Chop down a tree? Plant a sapling.

Along these lines, is there a way to regenerate the vines that hang from cave ceilings? Everyone needs plant fibre early for bandages and whatever and I'm wondering if we can replace them on the spawn world so new characters can gather their own rather than loot a starter chest at spawn. Plus they are a plant therefore I want to farm them.

No way to plant vines that I know of, and I'm pretty sure they don't grow on their own. The best you can do is find a "tree" that drops plant fiber instead of wood. Crops also sometimes give plant fiber.

Yep, this would be my advice as well. I leave vines that aren't in the way of a build. I also wish we could regrow grass.

Oh, I know about keeping important stuff on the ship since playing a random beta server. Buncha people zapped up all my junk and left as quickly as they came :V

People can take all the stuff I don't need tho. I'll throw them in closets somewhere off to the right of GAF starbase.

Yeah, what he said. :p

Oh, and one clarification about telling me if you're going to have guests on the server. You only have to tell me, you don't need to actually wait for my permission.

I've started a farm of sorts to the right of spawn. Contribute or take whatever seeds or saplings you like. Just don't take all of a seed or sapling, please. So far the tree farm has wood, kelp, plant fibre, metal wood, and one flower petal tree. It's missing eyeball trees and I forget if there are others.

I'll have a supply closet in the base itself when I finish it.

Alrighty, I'll wait for that :)

By the way, do spawned NPC's generally stick to an area? It's a nice way to liven up places, but if they're gonna wander around all over other people's building projects, well...

I think they try to stick fairly close to the spawner you put down. But I've had them disappear randomly before. They also die pretty easily. Also, I seem to remember putting one down and my defense turrets targeted and killed it. NPCs aren't really in a good state.

Looks like it just crashed, I was building stuff and suddenly things weren't appearing, enemies stopped moving, etc.

I didn't do anything. Found a desert planet that was not visited and started to make a cave... Maybe it was me but more the game updating all the blocks that kept caving in on me?

Server down? Or just my internet being stupid?

Damn, according to the logs, happened right after I went to bed.
It's really hard to tell if the server's crashed, just through the server window. You can't tell the difference between a crash or the server being empty.

I'm rebooting the computer right now, server should be back up in a few minutes.

Would anyone know why my game crashes whenever I want to connect to the server?

Going to need more info:
New character or existing?
What version are you running? Stable or unstable?
Are you using any mods?
When exactly does it crash?

Its also entirely possible that the server got borked again. Or, I havent updated server yet. One or the other.

EDIT: Server should be updated and running now. Give it a try.
