When's that 980ti coming out?? It's time to upgrade my GPU!!
Been toying with the idea of picking up a 2nd 980 and getting a 4K monitor for this game, or should I be content @ 1080p/Ultra on 1 980.

I was going to get two 980s as well, but PCGAF informed me about the issues of SLI gaming and talked me out of it. Titan wasn't announced then, otherwise I would have gotten that one. But now that I have a 980, I'm going to wait until the next gen cards come out (Pascal) that are supposed to have HBM (better than GDDR5). These cards would likely be faster than a Titan X, and likely have more memory too. They should also be a lot more cheaper as well. Two 980s will likely run out of memory at 4K.
So, either get a Titan X, or wait for Pascal cards memory.
What's your setup for this? I've seriously been considering upgrading to a 4k TV with a GPU capable of 4k and high/ultra settings. We're at a bad point in the GPU cycle for me to invest that much at this point though.I mean 1080p is nice, but 4K is heavenly. I game on a 4k 65" TV and it's hard to go back. So much clarity.
Why am I currently looking at a Titan X... I hope I don't do something stupid.

Back on topic, I bet my friend lunch that my i5-4670k@4.4ghz, R9 290, and 8gb RAM, will be able to average Witcher 3 above 50fps on ultra at 1080p.
I'm going to be buying him lunch, aren't I?
What issues did they talk you out of it with?
Just ordered a second 970 FTW, gets here Friday. From what I've seen their performance at 4k is great, far superior to a single 980. My current 970 gets me by on most all games at 4K, some at 1440p. Just wanted an addition boost for TW3.
Only older game so far that inexplicabley destroys my GPU at 4K is Company of Heroes.

Yeah, basically what plasticpassion said. The idea was to get the best single card possible and then upgrade with a new single best card every 2-3 years. It seems like a sound policy. Also means there are less cards to worry about selling. Single card setups will also be more cooler and quieter. Hit up the PCGAF thread if you want more details.
I don't think the current GPU tech is there yet for a single card to support 4K at 60 fps+ for every game. Once a card can do 90 fps for 90% of the games at 4K, that'd be the time to pull the trigger imo. Probably be the time I'll get a 4K tv. The next Pascal cards might deliver on this.

I get 1080p60 in GTA 5 on very high settings with my 780, DA:I also runs above 1080p30, so I wouldnt worry that much about Witcher 3my 780 am cry...
Well, I'll run it as best as i can on that card.
Should be able to do 1080/30 on ultra.
Ah fair enough. Yeah I've known about that.
I was definitely a single card guy before, always would rather wait on the next best single card, but I bought a 970 FTW just to get my foot in the door with 4K while I wait for the next big card.
However I found that I REALY like 4K gaming. So much so that the Witcher 3 hype had me impulse buy a second 970 FTW just in the hopes of Ultra @30fps 4K.
Haven't bought a card for the hype of one game since Half Life 2.
Seriously.

Lol, I love threads like this that consist almost entirely of "my system is XYZ, I wonder how it will do???".
OT, my system is i5-2500k @ 4.2 / 8GB / GTX970 I wonder how it will do?? :\
If it didn't people would complain so they gotta design their top settings for a system that's currently available.
True, but 1080p isn't really the resolution PC gamers with high end cards aim for.

I wonder how well it will run on a 2gb 770. That full game + expansion pack at $40 on steam is really tempting.
Theres additional heat issues, noise, power, heavy reliance on game specific SLI drivers.
Are you going to be playing at 4k with those 970s? The 3.5GB VRAM could bring some issues...
Ah fair enough. Yeah I've known about that.

Sorry, i know this really isn't the place to ask this but, does anyone know when/if we'll be able to pre-load the GOG copy. ?
Seriously though, are you expecting to run 4K decently with 3,5gb of VRAM? Even GTAV struggled with 3,5gb @ 1080p and we're talking a game way beyond the graphical fidelity of GTA in terms of open world games.

Runs fine for me on 2GB. (yes, with VHigh textures.)
He just said he bought a 2nd 970, and GTAV runs great on a single 970 in my experience. Hell, it even ran great on a 2 gig 670.
Yes, but if you crank it all the way up with draw distance, advanced shadows, population density etc and anti-aliasing, it makes a 970 sweat in terms of memory. Not that it wont run, but it's already really close to the limit.
Sure if you set MSAA to x8, and everything else maxed it'll use more than 3.5GB of video memory. But who uses x8 MSAA anyway? Especially on a 970.
Outside of using heavy MSAA, the game doesn't use more than 3.5GB and the memory usage indicator is also not 100% true to the sort of performance hit you can expect since you can go to for example 2400MB on a 2048MB card and it'll be fine.
Well, to completely eliminate aliasing in 1080p you need x8. Personally I think "maxing out" or "ultra" means setting all available settings to the max, including AA. Either way, this doesn't really conflict with my argument that with the introducion of the new console generation, the overall VRAM requirement, even for 1080p, for ultra settings is likely gonna rise up to 4GB. That's why I feel it's a bit a waste of money to go dual 970 with hopes of 4K performance, as the increased resolution will tear the memorypool apart. Even dual 980 are kinda risky investement, and I'd rather wait for what AMD has to offer with 390X or NVidia with 980ti (with possible 8GB).
What games are you talking about though? I already linked you benchmarks to just about every big game out there, and 970/980's in SLI handle damn near every one of them easily in 4K.
Metro Last Light, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, Alien Isolation, Ryse, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 4, Advanced Warfare, GTAV, The Witcher 2, etc etc.
I mean are there any games specifically that you are referring to that have a hard time in 4K? The only one I can think of this gen is Assassins Creed Unity, which apparently is a mess on just about any rig at 4K. Other than that though I can't find a single current gen game that 970/980s in SLI cant run at 4K at high/ultra settings.
