I think part of the problem with the modern explosion is that the way teachers and schools have taught the civil rights movement has been hugely problematic. They teach Martin Luther King Jr. and nonviolence and maybe mention Malcolm X incidentally. What they don't focus on enough is just how much actual violence exploded despite the nonviolence movement. In the 60s, blacks were furious too. And just like now, sometimes protests were peaceful, but often they were extremely violent and stores were looted and people were killed.
Many people love to say bullshit like "MARTIN LUTHER KING DID IT PEACEFULLY", but it's such a comically shallow view of what actually happened that it betrays how little education these people have.
