Playtonic unveils Yooka-Laylee (Banjo Kazooie successor) [Kickstarter LIVE - Funded]

I know it early footage but I'm not picking up any BK vibes. It looks more like a mash up of Mario and Spyro made in Unity.

Camera angle looks a bit too near to the characters.

Will be keeping a close eye on it regardless.

If you're posting in this thread you should have the comprehension to understand the state the game is in and even if somehow a person didnt the footage is tied to an article that explains that. Holding the devs responsible for this is like blaming thread creators for posters who just read a thread title and then rush to comment.

Its not even like Kickstarter is new at this point, people should know the score that you're not being shown anywhere near a finished game in pitch videos. These arent near-final trailers out of E3 or something.

I'm not "blaming them" as in "I hate you you suck", it's more a piece of friendly because I like them and want them to do well :)

Having a "early work in progress footage, not representative blablabla" is very commonplace in game videos and it's for a reason.
The video is also on youtube where people don't read text and are not here to, and anyhow it's a video that people could be watching without sound for a variety of reasons and miss out on the commentary, also because it's the internet this footage has most likely already been made into gifs/webms that are being retweeted, reblogged, tumblr'd without any form of context.

I think this is an especially valid point in the case of this footage because it already looks very good. It has proper animations, meshes, textures, etc, so it doesn't instantly look "work in progress", as would for example footage of a character inside an untextured map made up of placeholder blocks, filmed in engine with debug texts and gizmos everywhere.
So I think it's possible, seeing this footage, to think "hey, it looks nice and all, but it's a little empty". Because it is. And as you pointed out, it's normal that it is, because it's very early :)
But if you don't know that, then just like the guy you answered to, you could think "well this yooka-laylee game looks nice but empty".
Again, we could both moan about how people should do some research etc, but that wouldn't change the fact that if you wanna reach people through the internet you've gotta be careful of that, and when it just means putting up a short disclaimer on the footage, I think it's such a small step to take for Playtonic that they'd be wrong not to.

It's not playtonic's fault, one can consider it a sad state of affairs, but it is the truth, and if those things can become a source of misunderstanding and bad buzz for big AAA games with their monstrous marketing bucks then surely it can also be for small devs, so if it's so easy to prevent they should do it like everyone else.

I am excited about the game itself but I am not so sold on the characters. They feel a bit generic platform character.

I just laughed at the sign saying that he wishes that he was in a FPS game.

Just waiting for the Kickstarter page to launch so I can throw my money at them.

It's nice to see characters running about in a 3D environment collecting stuff again. Specifically from that camera angle I mean.

Can't wait for the KS to go live. Hopefully the proper trailer will be good.

That new IGN video looks great. The Yooka roll while Laylee runs on top is really cool, the sign saying he knows more about FPS games than he does about these is clever, and the music is incredible. The story about Mayles working on Kinect Sports clothing was pretty depressing, though, wasted potential! At least now there's Playtonic.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but with a strong emphasis on cautiously.

I understand that this is very far from the finished product, but I can't help but feel that some things won't change unless we point them out. So let me point them out:

- Everything sort of looks bland and generic. The characters need something more. The shorts, backpack, and necklace on Banjo went a long way in adding much-needed personality and uniqueness to the character. The levels looks like randomly pieced together set pieces with no rhyme or reason, no cohesive theme or purpose. It looks like something that was made in a home-user version of a level editor.

- Much love for Grant Kirkhope and David Wise, but the two have a very wildly different composition style, and I feel that their compositions (the ones we've heard so far at least) are too jarringly different in style to exist in the same game. It's like they're both composing separately in their own corner and not talking to each other. The Kirkhope songs sound like Banjo, and the Wise songs sound like DK. They're not the same game and they don't belong together. The two need to establish a common distinct musical style for the game, with clear boundaries of what fits and what doesn't. Okami had 4 different composers, yet all the songs felt like they belonged to the same game. I'm really not feeling this here.

- The animations/controls feel really loose and lacking in oompf. I know, it's early. But still.

That's pretty much my gripes with what we've seen. Everything else looks really neat!

Maybe it's just me, but the world looks so sterile. There doesn't appear much in the way of visual feedback when you kill enemies either.

I get it's very very early, but still really off putting.

You said it.

Its early as fook.

Yepp, it's early. The animations are terrible too, it looks so weird every time he jumps. But this is a game far, far from begin complete. The only reason they're already showing footage is most likely because of the Kickstarter, else they would have waited before showing footage, I'm sure.

Gone already?

Probably to fix the green flickering; I imagine it'll be reuploaded soon.

You're basing all this off of like a minute of veeeery early footage and like ten seconds of two different tunes?

What.

ya think? :) ...

i appreciate the fact that people want this to be good, but, damn! - people seeing 'awesome!!!' in these brief trailers is killing me. i mean, c'mon: what exactly are we seeing here that we haven't already seen a whole lot of before? :) ...

It would be cool if they had clothing based around the level they are in at the time.

Considering this is 3 months into development, the level design appears to be more of a test level to try out the basic game mechanics rather than something the final game would have:

SMS_test_lvl_view.PNG

However, since this is a Kickstarter game, they also prettied it up with graphical assets so that people can see what a level would look like.

The final levels will probably have much more going on like the Banjo games and DK64.

At least as far as the character designs go, I wouldn't be surprised if they were near-finished since they were kept secret for a while.

I think we can all agree with this, at least in its current state.

Hi chaps. Andy from Playtonic here.

Your assessment is correct - what you see today is the result of just three months work (honestly, it's amazing how fast this has progressed) and most of it will be unrecognizable compared to the final product - in a good way.

We focused on nailing the characters and tone the best we could in that time. The environment is very much a 'sandbox' at this point, though the themes are representative of what we're going for.

In an ideal world we'd have filled that jungle with tons of quirky characters, dazzling collectibles and interesting enemies but... time.

I've only been here a few months and I'm a Rare outsider and honestly, these guys are going to nail this. They create this stuff in their sleep. If I wasn't here, I'd be backing lots of cash :)

writing about how whats clearly a prettied up test level lacks cohesion like this thing is shipping out tomorrow is pretty darn silly, so is making a judgement call on the entire soundtrack based off of 12 seconds of music.

i understand not wanting to be let down or giving into blind hype, but come on

IGN didn't mention it in that video, but Steve Burke is also composing music for the game. If you don't know who he is, he composed the amazing music for Kameo: Elements of Power and did a few songs for Nuts & Bolts. He also collaborated with Robin Beanland for the soundtrack of Fable Heroes.

He specifically mentions he's bringing it up now in case it's not already fixed. And like j said, stuff like the character design and soundttack is unlikely to be fixed without input, yeah?

See? Espio's post mentions how they've been working a ton on theme and character designs, but I'd agree that the character designs could definitely use some work, and the theme is hurt by the soundtrack right now.

Thanks for jumping in mate!

I'm gonna back this as soon as the kickstarter goes live. I have such fond memories of the Donkey Kong Country SNES days, Banjo and Kazooie along with James Bond and Perfect Dark.

Cheers!

I honestly don't want to see Kirkhope and Wise try to mesh their styles together to be more cohesive. Let them do their own thing

I'm incredibly satisfied with what it has been shown and much more knowing that this has only been a 3 months work.I see and feel the huge potential this has and I'm starving for playing it and helping it become bigger, larger and better with the kickstarter.

It's not just "not giving in to hype", it's also cool that people point out what's missing, that way the playtonic peeps reading this can get the feedback even though most of this is very likely already in the pipe.

This right here, is exactly what I assumed and hoped to hear.

What.

Have you seen the IGN video? There's much more than ten seconds of music to be heard in there. Kirkhope is composing like it's a Banjo game, and Wise is composing like it's a DK game.

It doesn't fit. They need to talk to eachother and come up with a cohesive style. Either Kirkhope needs to Wisen up (har har) a bit or Wise needs to sprinkle some Kirkhope in his jams, or both.

You just compared a legendary video game(even if it's a beta level) to an infamous piece of shovelware

What place am I in again

I think I need some water and to lie dow

It ironically enough actually looks better than Bubsy even in a test room.

Also, I'll never get Gafs love for WW, it's great but "legendary" ehh.

For a game just three months in development by a team of 7, I'm impressed by how well it's shaping up. Looks really pretty. The final game should be much more fleshed out.

Espio/Andy, what's you're role at Playtonic?

Game looks like cute, cartoony fun which is one of my weaknesses. Wish that IGN video wasn't flashing green. Hopefully when it comes back. When is the kickstarter going up?
