Playtonic unveils Yooka-Laylee (Banjo Kazooie successor) [Kickstarter LIVE - Funded]

It is, and I just realized that it's a green swirl. Although a different shades of the main green she has going on. xP

Haha, no it's definitely not the back of her head. xD It's the little spike on their feet. Like with what roosters also have on them, those are also called spurs.

Oh, I see it now. The swirl actually isn't in game, and the bat has more purple on it than in the artwork, I wonder if they're be tweaked a bit better represent the artwork.

Also, now I'm confused, is Yooka a girl? I don't know why, but I just feel like Yaylee by both the name and that artwork is more likely to be a girl.

This makes me realise just how important the shorts and backpack are to Banjo's design. Yooka needs clothes too.

Yeah, it does seem very empty from the video. Positive that all of that will change in the future. The future will be an exciting one!
Well, that's the result of 3 months work with no real budget. Pretty impressive when you think about it.

Bat looks awesome, Lizard looks like a knock-off pokemon.

Never had an N64 as a kid but my friends swear by Banjo. Even got a mate making a game that's paying homage to banjo.
Hope it makes that crowd happy. Looks the part.

Can't wait to throw money I don't have at this Kickstarter!

Kind of unrelated, but does anyone know how popular the Banjo-Kazooie series was in Japan?

C-cute.

Sort of wish they reversed the genders and had the girl in the lead this time (or are they both guys?), but oh well. Playing Donkey Kong 64 right now, and Rare gave each Kong a TON of character---hoping they still have that flair.

I hope Playtonic reads GAF, and has checked out my Banjo-Kazooie/DK64 thread. Not to toot my own horn, but I feel I definitely found and diagnosed a lot of issues that bothered people about DK64 and Tooie, and I hope Rare doesn't repeat those mistakes here. Don't throw in a ton of weird FPS-junk, please!

I see what you did there :)

"Action and Puzzles and Banjo-Kazooie" is a pretty good tagline

Holy crap that Vine of the music, that little bit right at the end of it that sounds EXACTLY like that bit from Mumbo's Mountain, actually is it Mumbo's... trying to pin that down, anyway AAWESOME.

Can't wait to see what media they're releasing today.

EDIT: Also, I know we don't know how much they're asking for yet, but bets on how quickly they'll smash their goals?

Ahhh this looks fantastic! I'm gonna back this kickstarter 110%!

Now let's hope Rare announces Banjo Threeie at E3, so we can get the best of both worlds.

May I have a cookie?
I'm sure that ... Laylee is male. Without a doubt. I don't think it needs confirmation, it just seems obvious.

been done yet?

This is like... Might No. 9 all over again.
Assuming MN9 indeed doesn't turn out to be great, there are definitely some things than can and should be learned from it for this Kickstarter, because even with a bigger team and bigger budget the difference between making a 2D platformer and a 3D one is pretty huge. I don't think something like this has been done through KS yet, not at this scale.

It's probably too early to say this for anybody to listen, but I'll keep repeating what I've been saying since the first video game kickstarters:

Don't bury the developers with hate if the final game doesn't live up to everything that was promised! Let them learn and continue to build on the good things they did so that the next game will be better. If we give up every time the first game isn't amazing, there is no hope for this model in the long term!

The big difference between this situation and the MN9 situation, if I understand correctly, is that Playtonic isn't a temporary team formed solely for this project. They intend to stick around, which means they can build on what they create here, if they have our support.

I cannot wait for this. I was interested by all of the concept and in-engine shots they released, but the footage did it for me. I will be backing this today 100%!

Well said. As far as I am concerned, I am backing the developer, not the game itself, as I am only willing to give money to people I trust to make the right choices as development evolves.

I love the character designs and the puns and what little they have shown so far. It's toeing the line pretty well :)

Its a bit too close for comfort, its so blatant. There is no problem with drawing from games that inspire you but simply remaking the game isn't what is needed.

Banjo already exists we need the next evolution.

Still should this prove popular it should pave the way for more 3d platformers in future.

Anyone know when the kickstarter will be up? Just making sure I get in on an "early bird" type of thing. This thread has gotten me insanely hyped. I absolutely adored the first Banjo-Kazooie. This is love at first sight.

Does David Wise pretty much just do calypso/tropical music now? Tropical Freeze had a great soundtrack dont get me wrong but aside the Snowmads main theme and the references to the SNES songs almost everything was just Caribbean music. I miss the huge variety of his 90s work.

it would be a total waste of wise's talents if they got him for this game and didn't have him write some somber forest music like stickerbrush symphony or forest interlude

His soundtrack to Tengami had its own vibe

F YES DAVID WISE MUSIC SO GOOD.

This is legit gonna be the first ever Kickstarter I back.

Also there are definite differences between this KS and say MN9, for one the Playtonic guys have said the game's coming out whether it's backed or not, backing will just allow us to get some early support in and allow them to expand on the game. More levels maybe, other platforms, etc. I mean we'll see whatever that's gonna be later on this afternoon. Also as has already been said on this very page, this team is sticking around. It's not gonna be YL then goodbye, they'll do more and they did say they had ideas for games around other characters from Yooka so we'll see. I mean given the guys history, the tiny amount we've seen in the last day, what's to come today, that should be enough to convince most people they're serious. A lot of work's already gone into the game before it's even been Kickstarted and the Kickstarter/reveal/media hype this week I think shows they're putting their all in regardless.

In general I agree with you, but I think it would be wise to temper expectations a bit. This thread's going to be a bloodbath if they say it's going to be half the size of Banjo-Kazooie or something, yet that's about the amount of content I'd expect in a 15 dollar game.

You all realize that by going with this character design, they will manage to not only revive Banjo-Kazooie, but also another relatively obscure N64 platforming series?

Chameleon_Twist_2_-_1999_-_SunSoft,_Ltd..jpg

That's right, Chameleon Twist 1 & 2.

...anyone else here played those games? I know I sure as hell did.

Anyway, love the concept. It was a wise move to go with a bat instead of, say, a toucan. Bats do offer elements different from your standard bird. Such as the already mentioned sonar. One must wonder if the bat will also be able to bite foes, offering a short-range attack ala the rat-a-tat-tat of Banjo & Kazooie?

But, yes, we now have another platforming duo to add to the pantheon alongside Ratchet & Clank, Jak And Daxter, and of course Banjo & Kazooie. (Bless Clive & Wrench's poor unfortunate soul)

Yeah fair point, I mean I still want to be vigilant, especially if this is going to be the first Kickstarter I back, it's just tricky because I think I finally see why people got so hyped about some of the earlier Kickstarters now that it's happening to one of my favourite games.

Also totally listening to the Banjo Kazooie orchestrated soundtrack all afternoon now.

Well they made those games so I dont think they are inspired by it, they just want to make more of it

Can't wait to Kickstart this baby. So excited! The power of the tremendous talent that Rare once consisted of is so strong and this is an excellent example of just how much people loved the work they did. Really looking forward to this game!

I hated those games, they had a couple of good ideas but everything else was terrible. This is bringing back some bad memories of being stuck at my relatives summer house for the summer with nothing to play but that game and Mario "Palm Drilling" Party 1.

It's only really worlds 1 and 4 of Tropical Freeze that have that kind of music, and understandably so considering their settings. I found Tropical Freeze to have plenty of variety in the score. Even then, world 1 had a few different kinds of tracks that weren't remixes such as Busted Bayou.

So the people from rare that cancelled a game the other day were a separate team? I'm confused.

If you're referring to that thread from the other day, it was about a year old, and about a different project I think? I can't actually find the damned thread now.

EDIT: This thread

I think it was actually about Ukelele but they brought it back? I'm not totally sure what was going on there.
