Well damn. That kind of throws a wrench in my upgrade plan. I'm still on 1155 / i7 2600 and I don't feel like the increase in per-core performance is worth upgrading motherboard + CPU. I may just stop waiting for skylake and upgrade sooner, though I'd have to forgo DDR4 (need to do some reading on whether that's worthwhile).

You already have a decent PC. I had a Sandy i5 2400 (non K) that has served me well so far yet I grew impatient lately, once the Skylake news broke I simply gave up waiting.

G-Sync/Freesync situation is infuriating to say the least. It's insane that a display choice implies a GPU choice as well. It's a great feature, especially at 4K but I refuse to be funneled this way.

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new PC. It's been a while but I'm looking forward to it. I have to say that it's hard for me to build one since there's so many things out there.

First and foremost: I want to game on this. This thing needs to run The Witcher 3 on 60+ FPS, cranked all the way up. GTA V as well. Secondly, I want to do some video editing in After Effects as well (non-video game editing). I need an i7 for this I think? Or is RAM more important (16GB)?

I more or less know what I want to put inside my PC. But there's so much out there, I can't pick...

My budget is around €1200. Desktop only.

Things I can help with:

Graphics card needs to be a GTX970. I think this might be enough to run The Witcher 3 at highest settings, no?

1440p resolution (I think). I don't think I'll be gaming in 1080p anymore. But this isn't a huge issue. I'm still pleased with 1080p.

16GB of RAM. I just want to future proof this thing.

250GB SSD. This is a must. A 1TB HDD is too.

Mostly I just want this thing to last at least a year without upgrades.

I think a sound course of action is to wait for an official 980 Ti announcement and see what's what, and then upgrade only the GPU and display. I've been using AMD for my last 3 GPUs but with everything being expensive as hell lately, I'm thinking I may as well go nVidia this time around. But yeah, having GPU brand tied to the display tech is a real pain in the ass.
 
So I replaced my 7950 with a 980 and got an AOC Style G2460PG.

I finally feel the true power of PC gaming. This is amazing. I can't wait for Witcher III, as it will be the first time I get a game on PC over current gen consoles! Also, downloading GTA V so can't wait to replay it for a third time on PC :D
 
So pretty certain I just ruined The Witcher 3 launch for myself.



Bought a second 970 FTW to SLI with, but for whatever reason my computer wouldn't recognize the 2nd card. Tried uninstalling drivers, swapping cards, swapping SLI bridges, updating motherboard bios, etc. none of it worked.

Found a thread online with a similar issue, and it was due to the power connectors and where on the PSU they were connected.


So I tried switching those around a few times. 2nd or third switch around, I heard a single faint pop and smelled burning upon Turing it on. No smoke, and no other symptoms.


Now my PC won't display an image on either 970, or even when I put my old 6950 back in. PC boots, fans are spinning, harddrives Hum, no display.


So now I have no way of knowing what fried. My mobo, ram, card, CPU, a mix of it, all of it....


Beyond frustrated.

Help?

If I had to bet, it's probably, at least, the MB went bad. What is your PSU?
 
I have an i5 3570k and a GTX 670, and 8gb ram. I eventually want to upgrade my GPU, but I have no clue what I should get, or if my mobo is getting old enough that a new GPU isn't worth it without a mobo upgrade as well. Wondering if someone could help me out with that. Also, is 8 gb of ram good enough? Should I go with more even now, before considering other upgrades? Maybe that upgrade alone for a while?

That PSU didn't get very good reviews. Thus, probably, it wasn't a good idea to run it with SLI. Unlike most, I am very cautious with PSU. If they are stress and break down, it could take other parts of your PC. Thus, I buy PSUs that can keep it around 50-60% even under max load. And, they are most efficient and quiet at that range.

So I got it to boot to windows login screen one time with the 6950.


Then swapped to both 970s separately with no luck. And now back to the 6950 with no luck..


Odd no?

Overclock the CPU if you haven't (get a cooler like Hyper 212 Evo if you are using the stock cooler).
8gb should be enough for games for now.
What's your budget for the GPU?

I wouldn't even consider getting something until July, but I'd say 300? I've had a Hyper 212 in since I built it a few years ago, and I was playing around with overclocking, but I can't even remember what I left it at. I just knew I was happy with the stability and left it alone.
 
Okay GAF, looking to help out a friend here.

Budget is ~£600, OS and peripherals not required.

Friend does not want to build a PC, would rather have a pre-built. I'm a console gamer, so have no idea where to look, but he's asked me for advice. I've looked through yoyotech, Ebuyer, dinopc (thanks OP) and Chillblast but I just have no idea which rig would give best performance for gaming. Same goes for trying to put together a custom build on PCSpecialist. I just have no idea where bottlenecks would be, and don't want to screw him over.

Any help much appreciated.

Sounds like motherboard or PSU.

First things first, try a new PSU. Then a new motherboard. Your GPUs are likely okay, as is your CPU and memory.

Also, if you're putting $600+ worth of video cards in your system, it's very much worth it to spend money on a quality PSU to support such a thing.
 
Been on the red side of things since 2011, being entirely green before that.

Veeerrrryy close to pulling the trigger on a Nvidia 970 to replace my 2 x 6950s in CF. I imagine I'd see quite the performance jump.

At the same time though, if the new 300 series AMD cards come out at a decent price point (AU / Import) then maybe that is worth the wait..

Thoughts?

Better wait a little bit until 390x is announced, nvidia will counter with 980ti and the 980/970 will probably drop the price (happened with 770/780 when 290x arrived).

Well as I said above, I got it to boot to windows once with my 6950, but was unable to replicate it on the 6950 or the 970s. If it was the power supply I don't feel like that would be possible.


But then again, if anything was perminatnnly fucked how did I get to windows?

Really don't want to play trial and error buying PC parts until I replace the one that's fucked. But I guess I could buy a new mobo and hope that solves it. Just really hoping the 970s aren't fried.


The pop and the smell has to mean something is fried beyond repair I would guess...?

Motherboards and PSUs, when they go bad, are really hard to diagnose. They might sometimes work partially, and then weird out at other times when a certain part is under load.

In any case, you should get a different PSU because a CX750M isn't a great one. You have over $600 in GPUs, you need to get your power right.

You still have some cpu power left, you can force max turbo multiplier on the non K version i think.

I find strange the 980ti thing, why not launch the GTX1000 line with defective GM200 gpu´s? I bet the yelds for that massive chip is low so i bet that they are collecting alot of cut down versions. They could use them, rebrand the GM204 and launch a "new line" in 2015 since volta is probably a year away.

I really suspect that the latest rumours about a cut down GM200 for the 980ti is true because all those defective chips must go somewhere and between the 980 and the 980ti there are no space left for a new in between card.

But since the 390x will probably trade blows with titan X a cut down GM200 would not make any sense because it would be beaten by the 390x unless the cutdown GM200 clocks alot higher than titan X. I really dont know what to think about the nvidia strategy, better wait and see i guess.

Maybe for some games, if you have the K version you should overclock it.
If you dont have the K version but have an overclocking board, like a Z77 board, it can be overclocked 3 bins from the maximum turbo multiplier.
 
Can I use the gigabyte Z97mx gaming 5 mono with a NZXT Source 210 case? I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it doesn't seem to fit.

Yeah. It's a k variant but I'm not too keen to overclocking.

Did nVidia skip an year in recent history? I think that since the 400 series they had a new series every year. I wonder if they will re-brand the 900s as 1000, maybe fix that memory problem on the 970.

It should. Though you could even just use double sided sticky tape and slap it to the side of your case or inside the harddrive cage. It doesn't have to be oriented in any particular way. There's no moving parts.

I didn't think about tape. I'll be getting a new case in the fall for my Skylake upgrade, so this bracket will have to do until then. Worst comes to worst I'll just buy some tape and do just that.

The major downfall of the PS07 is that there's almost zero cable management. There's not enough space between the side panel and motherboard tray to route much of anything.

This helped, I now think the Silencio 352 is looking best - not as fiddly as the PS07.
 
I don't know if you were looking for something on a budget, but the TJ08 still stands as one of the best mATX cases ever made for the size. The airflow is incredible, and the AP181 fan has amazing stats. One of the few fans sized up from 120mm that has a truly different design fitting for its size. So it runs quiet too.

I missed this earlier, but you don't have to forgo DDR4 if you're upgrading now to an i7. You can go X99 + DDR4 with the 6C/12T 5820K

I wish I knew the exact day a regular series NVidia card would come out that does 4k at 60fps. I need to start budgeting every month to save towards a rebuild.
 
About RAM, I have 4GB (2x2GB) in, in case I want to add more, I know buying the same exact model would be the best thing to do, but I bought these 5 years ago, and I can't find the same exact model anymore. If I buy something with the samre freqs, timings and anything else, it shouldn't be much of a problem right?

GTX 670/680/770 = Kepler Mid Tier Chip
GTX Titan/780 Ti/780 = Kepler Big Daddy Chip

GTX 970/980/?1060? = Maxwell Mid Tier Chip
GTX Titan X/?980Ti?/?1080? = Maxwell Big Daddy

If this trend continues, you're looking at either the Pascal Big Daddy or whatever-follows-Pascal Mid Tier as the card that will do 4K@60 in most games.

So, like the GTX 1280 or 1380/1370, if naming conventions were to remain the same.

Gotcha, that's what i thought. So it would be more like late 2016. I'm ok with that then, 4K tvs will be a steal at that point and I love my current 1080p panel.
