Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

What exactly is the Kraken? I feel like I missed something? I know it's a reference to Clash of the Titans, but was there actually something in the Direct about a Kraken?

My vote for OT would've been "No CODs in this stream, only squids" or something like that.

The kraken is a special weapon I think that transforms you into semi-larger squid that is invincible for a short time and can just steam roll over anyone in your way.

So will Splatoon have any options to invert the aiming? Tried to search info on it but can't find anything on this.

"sup, playa?" lol

Yes, the ability to transform into an invincible Kraken is one of the special weapons.

I liked the direct more than the last Xenoblade one. I'm a bit worried with 2 aspects:
  • Will their servers be able to handle the demo/beta? I certainly hope so. If they can't then that will be bad for the game's image even if at launch those issues aren't present.
  • Will the game review well with so much content being added post release? Hope there's enough for reviewers to feel they have gotten enough out of it. Not sure if they'll be allowed to play ranked battles.
Hope it goes well, the game needs to have a good launch if the IP wants to stick around.
Looks pretty fun so far.

Everybody so anxious to download it when you cant play it until tomorrow.

I just want to have it

Also I'm curious whether or not you can actually interact with the demo beyond going straight online

EDIT: Demo is up in Europe

much like smash bros. for wii u they probably didn't want to delay the game so they're patching in some stuff post-launch to get it out on time

I think it isn't even that. Mario Kart 8 has proved that they can keep a game relevant for a longer time trough introducing new mechanics and maps in regular succession.
My guess is, that the game is truly planned and developed according to this, so ranked games are planned to be introduced later and the other modes even later, to make a splash in the news again and to have players coming back over several month.

Edit: It's their way of games as a service. And they are still figuring it out for better or worse.

Can't handle the squid swag?

You know I can.

So it sounds like the team battle is treated as a separate mode. You MUST have four people. So still no way for say me and one other friend to be guaranteed to be teammates against randoms.

I hope there's an invite system so that communicating with people you intend to team up with outside of the confines of the game isn't the ONLY option to coordinate teams. (I don't mean voice chat... I just mean a way to invite people without having to coordinate via an outside forum or something to tell people to join up for a team battle. And no, I don't mean miiverse.)

It'll also be disappointing if the private matches MUST be 4v4. I know the game is balanced for 4v4, but if you have 6 or even 7 people it'd be nice to have the option to play 3v3 or 3v4.
