Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

Actually, I don't. When I started playing it had more than that. Nice trivia, though. What were those two stages?

2fort and...

Nevermind there were 6.

Hey remember when TF2 only had 6 maps?

Point being, we only ever played 2Fort and Dustbowl. Everything will be fine for a while.

As long as they add CTF.

Depending on where you are the Squid Amiibo should be the easiest to find since thats available in the game's special edition (in EU I think).

I have to wonder what the Splatoon Amiibo availability will be like and if Nintendo's prepared for it somewhat.
What if I already have the standard version? The squid Amiibo is now not an option since I'm not buying the game twice.

Lol. My kid just came screaming into the room complaining that our internet is not working because he couldn't get the Splatoon demo to work. Did a bit of diggin only to find out that whatever Nintendo put up for download on the eShop won't unlock for actual play for another day or 2? Are they serious? That's friggin hilarious. I still feel like I'm missing something.

I'll bet by the time this unlocks my kid will have entirely forgotten about it. GG Nintendo.

Pomf is down for me so I couldn't upload anywhere else.
I hope Splatoon is a success and that Nintendo makes a Splatoon rhythm game in the future. Great music + dancing squids = Win.

Those two stages are great, so it is easy to see why they were the most played. That said, I never got what was so good about Dust 2 in CS 1.6

Then your kid has a very short attention span.

Hmm... I like the idea of them holding back some content for later, since the content is free anyway.

I like the idea of ranked battles being unlocked when there's enough people to play them, and I like the idea of keeping lower level people out of ranked battle. And I like the idea of new ranked game modes being unlocked later.

But I do think it's silly to keep us from playing with only friends until later. Shuffling teams is generally not something I like.

I think it's interesting keeping only two maps up for a certain amount of time, but I think 4 hours is too much time. It's true that shooter maps are not the same as Mario Kart tracks. Yes I would be disappointed if I had to play Baby Park and Excite Bike arena for 4 hours, but I don't think it would upset me much to play 2 different splatoon maps for 1 or 2 hours.

I think the reason this stuff doesn't bother me is that we've seen in the past that shooters have a problem of encouraging people to diversify what they play. Everybody just plays team death match. Nintendo seems to be trying to encourage people to play new modes by giving them out over time.

But yes, there are things about this that I don't think are a good idea.

You obviously haven't seen how popular Killing Floor 2 is with only 3 maps.

??? A lot of people that play shooters tend to play HOURS in the same stages. The amount of time I wasted on the Panama map - Nuketown in BLOPS II or dust2 in CS T-T

Nope, I gave up on shooters scene ever since 2011-2012. I think my last shooters game was awhile ago. I would guess Call of Duty: Black Ops or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 but I'm not sure which one. I felt that Splatoon rekindle my loves for shooter games, and bring me back into genre once again.

I'm not saying that it's wrong to have few maps. I'm trying to say that the systems that only locked two stages per 4 hours might be silly because we already have some maps on the game. I'm aware that some of us are used to our previous experience with other shooter games where we would play the same maps over and over. I have been there with several games for myself, like Desert Glory and Frostfire in SOCOM.

Its a stress test, and in the internet cafe, I doubt it. Club Nintendo was battered until the very end.

Wow, so I guess you don't preload or let him see any game being announced at all. You only let him know a game exist on release day?

The main issue people have is:
1) They cannot play in a party with friends at launch
2) They cannot play with friends in a private lobby at launch

Of course people are happy that we will get it eventually, but not having it at launch while nearly every online multiplayer game allows you to at least play with friends only at launch. Saying "wait till the patch comes out and then get the game" isn't really a solution at all.

People can take issue with the feature sets being launched but this is missing the point, the forest exists not just the trees. If the game is delayed until August to launch with the added feature set, then the game simply will not launch or be playable at all until August. It launches in May fully functioning for the ability to play it in single-player and multi-player, with the added patch in August to allow team based gameplay.

Saying "wait for the patch" in this scenario is a solution because the game is not broken without said patch. It works perfectly well as advertised to work: single-player, multi-player, and fashion. What it lacks is something they've told you they'll add in 1-2 months time.

There are two possibilities behind this: (a.) they're not able to finish in time, or (b.) this team based development started later to respond to criticism or concern they were given after reveals. In the later case, it would likely have been impossible for them to incorporate such a thing come launch sans delaying a finished game as they had originally envisioned it.

So if he could have played the demo now he would have forgotten about it by the time the game releases. What did Nintendo lose?

Uh... I imagine he plays the demo now, loves it then follows the handy-dandy link to the eShop to pre-load? Or maybe he hates the demo and never speaks of it again. I don't know, don't care.

Then your kid has a very short attention span.

Yeah. He's a kid. He's got about zero minutes to devote to games that don't work when he can dip into Dad's Steam library anytime he wants.

It doesn't seem weird to you guys that they put up all this Splatoon biz on the eShop and then when you download the testfire whatever, you get squat? Seems weird to me.

Wow, so I guess you don't preload or let him see any game being announced at all. You only let him know a game exist on release day?

What? I don't get what you're saying. The kid manages his own video game biz. Sometimes I'm like, "Hey kiddo, check this out" when I find a game I like and he does the same for me. Otherwise the only gatekeeping I'm doing is content control. He's the one that saw the shit on the eShop, downloaded it and then came to me for solutions. This is absolutely the first time he's come to me with, "Dad, I downloaded this demo but can't get it to work." When I told him it wasn't a demo (semantically it makes no difference to him what they call it) but a stress test his exact response was, "I don't get it. Why let me download it then? Nintendo is dumb."

Which I found hilarious.

I think if you generally had an informed choice of what you wanted prior to launch it'd be as easy to just switch pre-orders. At least, that's what I ended up doing.

Preloads it and what? By the time the preload will be activates he would have forgotten about it and wouldn't have played it anyhow? How about you being a good dad and preload it for him and make him a surprise? He will at list enjoy it on the launch day before moving to something else.

Well it's a bit sad that the whole underground facility singleplayer is just made up of challenges. I was kinda expecting somewhat of a gritty storyline, with how the facility seemed like some Portal type stuff. Still, those unlockable scripts show that there is a backstory, but it doesn't seem like it's really presented as a narrative singleplayer mode. Which is fine as well, just not what I was expecting. I think the singleplayer will still be fun.

There's no reality where this takes place. I don't understand what's difficult to understand here. I don't blind buy video games for my son. He doesn't blind buy games for himself. He always tests them first (demo's, friends copies, whatever) to figure out if he likes it or not before buying. The chances that he'll be able to hit a narrow test window to get a chance at trying Splatoon is so slim it's not worth considering and as I said, without a demo he won't be buying Splatoon. This game has friggin single player right? They probably could have tacked level one onto this download for exactly this reason.

The entire thing is so goofy to me that I don't even know what to think. It would have been a ten minute thing! Download demo-play demo-decide to love or hate game. Done.

The game is only going to be online for an hour at a time. Better to have the download out of the way now than let it cut into playing time when the game does go live tomorrow.

Single player isn't just challenges. Is it?

It isn't a cinematic single player that is for sure but it is a typical 3d platformer with shooting elements.

I'm curious. Why do you always say "at list" instead of "at least"? I've seen it in so many of your posts, I have to know.

me after watching this direct
anyone else got reminded of archer when announcer said sploosh lol

Sigh, no news about multiplayer against AI bots. That means there won't be any for sure.

The plaza looks great though. I just hope it doesn't end deserted in a month or so.

Watching it again, I noticed that it says there is 1 Sunken Scroll hidden in each level.
The menu here shows 27/28 sunken scrolls

Does that mean there are 27/28 levels?

Considering that there's a boss icon type of thing, it's hard to tell if that's the whole game or just one world. But I'm gonna guess it's the whole game.

I'm just going to assume they are modeled after them. Because I feel like they have to be, at least the one on the left

Man, you will definitely be able to play as octogirl.

I think what people aren't realizing about the limited maps available in Free Mode is that Nintendo wants to make sure that there are enough people ready to play. This is a game that requires 8 players and there seems to be no bots. With the low install base the Wii U has, it stands to reason that Nintendo wants to be able to guarantee that anytime you play, there will be a team waiting to get ready. That's why ranked battles are currently locked at start-up.

I do think that 4 hours is a bit too long though. 2 hours should have been the case.

Dunno if it has been posted yet. But if you start the demo and press the home button, you get access to the manual of the game.
I'm scrolling though it atm

Why not just do like any other game where you join lobbies with a random map voting system. There's no reason for their dumb map implementation system.
