Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

I love it how the people doing comparisons, ostensibly about graphics, don't really care about representing good data.

Just look at these screenshots. They're compressed to shit and have little metadata appended to them, where were they captured, on what system and when?

It is not even the same location. Why do people use this for comparison?

Is it a downgrade? Yes

Does it bother me as much as Watchdogs? No. Call me a hypocrite but I know the game will deliver and it is easily the most impressive open world title out there. I doubt ANY PS4 open world title will look as good any time soon.

Pretty sure that, graphically speaking, infamous SS has just as many bells and whistles with incredible IQ.

I don't know. I can't point out a single thing that looks better in the recent footages. The stuff we see in the Sword of Destiny trailer is on another level graphically.
Not only does the foliage look better. The lighting looks much better and not as flat in the new gameplay vids.

And compare the draw distance. Far away mountains and woods on the horizon look way more detailed.

I suppose you're right. I was thinking primarily of character models when I made that comment.

There's a downgrade but nothing will change because gamers are weak and can't do much about it. The game will still sell a lot, telling CD Projekt RED and other pubs/devs it's ok to bullshit people. And you know the game has been downgraded because of consoles and their inability to be upgraded, unlike PCs which are always evolving.

I'll need some numbers and experts to back this up because from what I recall the textures on anybody BUT lead characters was a joke. But yeah the game looked graphically impressive. We just have to consider the game wasn't as big of a map and gameplay wise had little to do.

These are screenshots of a video. Not represent the final quality

I can take screenshots of The Sword of Destiny trailer directly from youtube and point out everything that looks good if you want me to. The image doesn't have to be completely sharp to see what the game looks like.

Yes there is definitely a downgrade. But this game in its current state absolutely looks beautiful.

My only concern is if this whole console parity idea is a real thing. I might just be getting swept up with all this talk and my paranoia is getting the better of me...

Why would you be scared of console parity when they are different resolutions?

Why would they stop? This is obviously working for them. While the hardcore starts to hype the game based on prerenders some of that hype spreads to the casual gaming crowd, and that crowd is more numerous and more lenient than the hardcore crowd. As long as the game is good they will get away with it and earn more money than they would if they were honest.

It's threads like this and making people aware of it that can have a negative marketing effect and make dev/publishers respond.

What bugs me is when people say they don't care. If they don't care then they will continue to be lied to.

Console parity? Game looks better on PS4 than xbone, and PC at Ultra looks even better. If you're talking about that they had to downgrade PC from the 2013 trailer then I doubt that was solely due to consoles.

Here are some better captures from the Sword of Destiny trailer, especially in regards to foliage:

It's clear that the game didn't get downgraded across the board. Just certain things, while others were upgraded. No need to paint a picture of of this massive downgrade across the board where none exists.
It has been significantly downgraded since the Sword of Destiny trailer... In fact it was after that trailer that we started noticing big differences when they showed us new stuff. We've established this in the thread already with all the comparisons. You're looking at pre-downgraded shit... This is the damn issue here. That trailer is just as bullshit as the 2013 one in terms of visuals.

So you are telling me that the random road of the open-world game looks worse than the handcrafted setpiece of the previous game? I mean what is the screenshot comparing here? The Witcher 3 screenshot isn't even in a forest.

Then there is stuff like the compression. The missing info about the used systems.

Like, I can't shake off the feeling that everybody loves to play detective these days and as long as their work stirs up enough shit they think they did well. I saw other baffling screenshot comparisons and while I agree that obviously there has been a downgrade (which will happen to every game you are anticipating right now), I can't help but feel a lot of the examples brought up are pure trash.

Can you point out the what has been downgraded since the SoD trailer?

Gaming media/sites should get this story and other similar ones, If gaming journalists make articles about this (when every devs do it and not only when big bad publishers like Ubi, Sadly From got a free pass when they downgraded Dark Souls 2 and now CDPR will most likely get a free pass as well) and treat it as a false advertising and a bad misleading shady behavior less and less developers will do it in the future, but yeah that will not happen.

I think it's to show that TW2's foliage looks better than TW3's.

TW2 had a whole bunch of corridors though, so I imagine it's easier to add detail in a closed environment vs. open world. I remember that swamp section looking really open ended... but once you started walking around you were basically on rails between the trees.

Granted it's been awhile since I played the game, so perhaps my memory is off.

And this thread is about how the game has been downgraded since?

Should we only talk about how it's been downgraded in 2015 and ignore everything before then?

You can, but then you're ignoring realities of game development. You could argue that developers shouldn't show their games so early but I think most people prefer it the way it is now.

I:SS is certainly a great looking game , but the static weather and lighting can clearly give developers more room for other graphical effects and performance.

Yes, there's a downgrade, to argue any different is being delusional.

It depends on what you mean by downgrade. If you are referring to individual elements that have undergone changes for the worse then, yes, there are some downgrades. But if you are referring to a generalized or overall downgrade then, no, that hasn't been demonstrated at all. Not even close. Much of the evidence, in fact, seems to contradict that claim.

Playing the game now, and most of the game has a tonne of invisible walls.

All you are going to get is to not see footage of the game until it is in beta then. We are comparing months of released footage to a single time at E3 when it looked much better, and even before that they released footage were it looked worse, really flat and at an early stage. I rather get the early game footage than just the CGI trailer.

I'm not sure why you insist on using such awful quality captures of the Sword of Destiny trailer SaberEdge. I provided some higher quality ones.

The low quality ones you use mask the drop in quality of the current game.

What is the definition of "downgrade". The game looks different now, yes, but does that mean it was downgraded? Just because you prefer the older visuals, doesn't meant the game's new visuals are downgraded.

Also, don't they put disclaimers on early footage stating that it's a work in progress and may not represent the quality of the final game?

I wish it were as shown for the first time? of course, but that will not happen. I think once in front of our screens of all this, no matter

That does look nice. I hope the rocks on the bottom pick still hold up in the release version.

And that detail on Geralt's sheathe. You can see the bolts sticking out on the side.

Because different time of day and locations are iron clad excuses to excuse the claims of downgrades

Unless you're saying that no downgrades happened, then using images from different times of day and locations with lots of compression is totally fine.

Because reasons.

The foliage downgrade is the most disappointing thing for me. The saddest part is they have (or had) the assets at some point but decided to do away with them. A lot of the screenshots coming out have a film of vaseline (TXAA maybe? or perhaps just screencaps from YouTube) over them which makes the low quality grass look like a blurry mess.

I haven't been watching videos in order to avoid spoilers, but I'm guessing that grass and the such doesn't animate like it does in the trailers either.

The being said, this isn't the downgrade that Watch Dogs was, but it's not going to be nearly as impressive as the upgrade that GTA V was. I think it will look great and probably play well, but the main thing for me is the story which I'm sure is going to be fantastic. It's a shame that it was being marketed the way it was (and really, still is), but I think Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment has more to do with that than CDProjekt Red, although I could be wrong.

A sidegrade then!
