Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

For a forum that prides itself on valuing gameplay over graphics, the amount of whining about them choosing not to go with an outdated method of producing graphics that would limit the gameplay breadth they can achieve at a given budget is surprising.

Uh, isn't that still dependent on the team? I mean, you could give Michelangelo a rock hammer and you'd still get a masterpiece in about 10 years.
Well yeah, given unlimited time you can produce good results with anything.

A kickstarter project doesn't have unlimited time or resources. As such, using one of the very best tools in the business (UE4) is a huge point in its favour.

New Igavania has me so manic right now. You have no idea.

I can't believe people are somehow using UE4 as a negative point in this thread.

Seriously, UE4 is fantastic. Not only is it an amazing engine technically, it also offers an extremely productive toolchain.

It being used should give you a huge confidence boost in both the game's technical quality and the team's ability to make effective use of their time to produce content.

Agree on this for sure. UE4 being used over UE3(as was the case with MN9) is certainly a step in the right direction, both in quality and the team's ability to get work done. I've heard nothing but good things about the engine. Hopefully that plus then targeting the current gen rather than everything will help with the production of this game.

I'm crying tears of joy at this.

Been wayyyyy too long for another Metroidvania entry. And PC too!? AMAZING. Iga does what Konawont.

Is "Igavania" a thing? I thought people referred to them as "Metroidvania" games?

It was fun watching him talk around Castlevania without actually saying it, while also having the video take place in an actual castle.

Amazing.
Pledged for the digital edition. The physical-exclusive content sounds lame, and the boxart doesn't look too hot either.

It's doing okay, but I can't help but imagine how much more money it would raise if it had some actual quality screenshots & a $15 get the game tier. The absence of those two things are really holding this Kickstarter back from its potential.

Do you think they'll charge a digital shipping fee for all those?

Honestly, dream, this may be the carniest thing I've ever seen in video games. It boils down to "market our game to unlock more incentives to give us money."

It'll probably go largely unchecked because there's seemingly this weird drive in gamers to think they're a part of a "team" or "good cause", especially when it comes to supporting these nostalgia projects. The reality is they're just being used as pawns for marketing.

Yes, Guilty Gear Xrd and almost nothing else in >30 years of gaming history proves that 2.5D can potentially work out, but it's extremely unlikely and the concept art is entirely possible with 2D art. I really wish devs would stop providing fake 2D concepts of 3D games, it'll never look that good, not unless the characters are sprites on a 3D background--I'm all for that.
For fuck's sake.

Kirby's Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Little Big Planet, Puppeteer, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, hell, even Street Fighter IV (Which was a step down from Street Fighter III, but fucking everything is a step down from Street Fighter III), all very good-looking 2.5D games.

And then you have games with pre-rendered sprites like Rare's Donkey Kong Country titles that people adore even though they're intentionally given the appearance of 3D models on 2D backgrounds.

Iga was the brainchild for them arriving in the Castlevania series.

I wish it would be released for PS3. Harmony of Dissonance, despite being so different to other Castlevanias and using recycled sprites, looks pretty good.

I want to play it, but I don't have a platform to do it.

I'm in for $28.

May upgrade to $100 though. Having your name in the credits is pretty enticing (do they do this with other kickstarter games?)

Agreed but I disagree about it being surprising.

Folks complaining about 2.5d, check out this video - this game is 2.5d, but it sure looks to me like a 2D cartoon:

2.5d doesn't necessarily mean "it looks like crappy 3D"

Half of the stages in Sonic Generations are 2.5D

Donkey Kong Country Returns / Tropical Freeze are 2.5D

Strider 2 was 2D sprites imposed on 3D backgrounds i.e 2.5D

Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins is a gothic horror action platformer similar the old stage based Castlevania games and it's 2.5D

2.5D isn't a bad thing especially when you are on a strictly limited budget to work with.

They're aiming for a $30 game it seems, a $15 tier would only work if they made it an early bird reward and those suck dick

It was probably wishful thinking on my part but I was expecting this game to look more like what Castlevania artworks looked like and in that sense also what games like SotN and OoE looked like, just with higher resolution assets. I don't really get that feeling from the concept screenshots at all, which is fine but none the less a minor disappointment to me. At the very least I expected more muted colors and a grittier look. I might actually mess around with the digital virbance setting to "fix" the saturation :)
Still I'm very happy that there will be a new Igavania and thats what matters most.

Optimistic that the game will end up looking nice in spite of 2.5D and MN9 fears.
After all Gothic Castles don't look drab, they can't, the world will simply not allow it.

But hey I think Mirror of Fate looks nice enough so maybe I'm just easy to please, speaking of being pleased more Yamane goodness in our future.

My point is you could have great tools, but if there's something wrong with a project's structure, those tools won't save it.

The people who are wary don't know how to trust someone who uses a 2d mockup, made in the style of an older game, for a 2.5d game which might look very little like the mockup at all. That's why they might want a feel for the gameplay if they can't get a feel for the style.

Igavania is more accurate and less using copyrighted terms.

It almost seems people only like Castlevania titles because they are sprite based. Yeah, the game around it simply does not matter at all...

Who cares about how it looks! IGA directing, great gameplay and ultra fine details everywhere, don't you remember SOTN wtf, U4, unity3d whatever they could make it on Flash and still be a great game.

I think, unfortunately, part of the "mysterious entity" funding that he's claiming is proof that people would throw money down on this, and not "downloadable budget title" money but like...legitimate money.

Which kinda blows, but by the same token I did throw $100 at it.

unreal 4 really? why?
Because it's pretty much the best engine available right now? Why not?
