Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

They're also co-working on Shantae 4, which is 2.5D with sprites and looks like this

But people will keep thinking it's their fault MN9 looks drab lol

"They" is one dude from Inti who does their character portraits, they're not actually working directly on the game, as far as I know.

I wish they were transparent about it, but I understand why this is happening.

Publishers are ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED right now - budgets are higher than ever, and they have no idea what will sell.

A lot of this is because Western bizdev people, for the most part, are glorified marketing people and don't actually know anything about games.

I mean, if I were at a publisher I would've funded this in a heartbeat because I know that Iga has a lot of pent-up demand for a new game, he's extremely experienced, and that all of his non-3D games have been profitable.

But most people at publishers don't know any of these things, so it seems risky.

IGA has addressed these exact points in some of the interviews that have been published today: he says many of the big international publishers balked because their international branches couldn't come to a consensus about his pitch, and that other western mid-tier publishers backed off because they were afraid of getting on Konami's bad side.

wait, so who is the developer behing mighty number nine? comcept or inticreates? are inticreate just programming people for that game?

Also, who is the director for bloodstained? Iga himself? or one of the inticreates people.

yes i believe thats right comcept is the developer and inticreate was just programming.

not sure about the second question but the kickstarter says iga is project lead.

I guess if you're a mid tier developer and you know Konami gives no fucks about game dev anymore if you stay on their good side they might gift you with a chance to make the next lords of shadow

I wonder if this could potentially beat MN9 end result of 3,5 mil on kickstarter. It's going like a train sofar.

They need to announce new stretch goals in the next couple of hours to keep this train from stopping lest they loose a lot of momentum.

I'm convinced a huge part of the reason NotBanjo-Kazooie game got to 1 million pounds was because there was a desirable stretch goal there already.

So the secret boss in the 60$ tier+ (the physical copy) is gonna make people "go apeshit" (sic), I'll bet good money on it being either Dracula or a boss based on a Belmont.

They should have picked a better name for the big bad, so that in the inevitable sequel when we play his son with the reversed name it would sound better then 'Lebeg'

While I things like kickstarters probably work out better for everyone (aka all platforms get the game), I'm surprised 1st parties haven't ever swooped in on opportunities like this. Nintendo is run by far more programming/technical types than most companies, so I'd think they could actually see the value in this unlike the typical publisher.

Curious why they aren't updating actually. Like the social achievments and stuff. Some of those got hit hours ago.

Sooo...are we assuming the physical copy will be available in retail and that the Kickstarter is just a special edition with the slip case + extra digital content? That's what I gather but I don't know if I'm right.

I have been getting a bit cynical about kickstarter, especially after the trainwreck of Double Fine Adventure, and was thinking about waiting for the game to release before buying it - but after watching that video. Yeah, I am in! The question now is just at what tier. A physical copy is always tempting...

I wonder if so many of you can see the forest for the trees when you complain about the publisher deal...you're not investors or business partners, but we are getting a bonafide Metroidvania with Yamane music thanks to having a secure-enough funding source and professionals in place to make it! Now, all we need is a legit Classicvania clone.

In many cases like this, people have to remember that the publishers are not the ones fronting the cost of the game development, that is what this kickstarter is for. They're just publishing the game. Publisher influence on the development of this game should be non-existent as they are probably not giving any money to fund development.

As for the mysterious publisher.... I don't see it being Konami. It seems really weird that they would agree to publish a Castlevania inspired game, and not an actual branded Castlevania game. It would be funny if it was Capcom. I could also see it being Sega... maybe.

Another one that I wouldn't rule out is Paradox Interactive. Paradox is really good at snapping up Kickstarter funded games.

Shame about there being no chance of a Wii-U or PSV version, as this is being made on UE4.

You just know you want those signed physical goods! ;)

Seems like a fair assumption considering the wording.

WHY IS THE DISC $60?

The Kickstarter edition of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night won't be sold at retail. It comes in an exclusive slipcase and it's preloaded with backer-exclusive content—the Swordwhip, the only weapon powerful enough to unite Teams Sword and Whip, and a super-secret boss who you'll have to foil to earn it.

I don't think Gebel is the main villain. They described him as the "rival character", which sounds like Albus' role in OoE. He starts out as the antagonist, but eventually it turns out he's actually fighting the big bad on his own terms.
He's also likely one of the playable/bonus mode characters.

I got a good PC and a laptop, so I'm fine, and it looks like a neat concept that I want to try out when it comes out. But I prefer platformers on a handheld, and I don't like how a boss is behind the $60 backer reward, but oh well, need that incentive to donate.

Any advantages they might get from a crowdfunding campaign would be massively outweighed by the sheer amount of bullshit that would be flung in their direction for daring to ask the public for money.

This GIF is wrong.
It should be 'Konami is a mistake'
You're dissing the Konami that made Iga what he is now :V

IGA really did pick the absolute perfect time to launch this. I'm sure the general sentiment of "Fuck you Konami" is probably driving a lot of the backers.

A new Igavania, I've been needing something to scratch that itch for a while, so I'll be backing this as soon as I get paid on Friday.

Well, I read that Iga does claim that 90% of the game is funded by this publisher and I assume expensive QA will be handled through them with an additional support for marketing and offering them the opportunity for their physical discs on PS4 and X1. That solid amount of funding to start and all of the other bits necessary to make a big game, like a legit Metroidvania in the tradition of releases past, will ensure that this won't fall apart like a solely KS-funded game might when they don't have the financial room to get people locked in for development and when things might take more money than anticipated.

Ah, so this game won't run on a cheap laptop?

I'm sad that this is a Kickstarter.

Ugh: This Kickstarter video is everything I hate about Kickstarter videos,

1. Old guy who hasn't worked on games for awhile plying nostalgia
2. The open mentioning that they don't even need the KS money.
3. Vague promises for more features outside the original scope.
4. No gameplay of any kind.

As someone trying to get a product off the ground now, trust me, they do. Just because they have "secured other funding" doesn't mean that they have people who will actually give them the money. What they have is people who will give them the money if they prove actual, monetary demand. An email list or petition wouldn't be enough. They would need cash pre-orders, and Kickstarter campaign is a great way to raise that
