Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

I'm taking mine seriously as well! I kinda wanna make a "speedrunner's weapon" or something with a weird scaling gimmick so that it won't be something you just use for a levels then throw away.

I thought about that too but I'd really like to make a weapon that's super useful overall and not just speedruns. It'll depend on if we can define parameters and not just the design. I'm also totally going to ask for a super high quality file of my design if I can. I'd love to have that for the future, lol

I eagerly await the crazy backlash when screens come out and aren't identical to the concept art.

2.5D implies it'll look like MN9, right?

It's been stated a million times that unlike MN9 they're actually going to try to replicate the concept art using techniques similr to guily gear XRD

That's why I'm conflicted, but ideally something that helps you move fast would be useful generally as well :P

Indeed I'm hoping we can dictate not just looks but also abilities.

They named dropped Guilty Gear, so probably more like that. (These are also more realistic characters, so there's less danger in representing them in 3D. stylized characters can look worse)

He was working on at least two Castlevania games before Konami said "we'll put our efforts into MercurySteam" which only proved to be a mistake. They threw everything he was doing out the window the moment they could attempt to put the franchise into the AAA space. It's that emphasis on AAA that probably killed the series, too.

I can hardly fault Konami for pulling Iga off the series. The next logical step for the franchise was to make a legit AAA console release, and Iga was most definitely not the right person for the job. He fundamentally didn't understand how to make a 3D Castlevania game, Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness were proof enough of that. And Iga's big idea for the next game was preying on nostalgia and bringing Alucard back and making a SotN sequel in 3D. He would have completely ruined his legacy had that actually happened.

Since I don't follow MN9: Has everybody turned on it? What's so bad about it? Just the visuals?

Worst case scenario: You have to cancel the 100$ tier and pledge again for the 300$ one. I'm pretty sure there is an upgrade option though, but I can guarantee it

They had a community manager kick the gamergate hornets nest; thus GG people are massively down on Mighty no 9; I think most of the hate comes from them or as a side effect of their negative comments on it.

Or it may be that backers who got the demo wanted modern MegaMan X and got slightly updated MegaMan 2. There is some believable comments about repetition but the original series and retro remakes was fairly repetative. It's hard to gauge because it's not out yet so we'd have to take people at their word and since gamergaters have poisoned the well of opinions you can't take the 'backlash' at face value.

I like the idea of a speedrunning weapon. Maybe the longer you play the weaker it gets?

Would kinda break speedrunning though if it forces people to get it.

They're doing 3D and using shaders to give it a 2D look. Ben Judd even kinda apologized for the confusion with MN9's situation.

Sure, on the 3D realm I can understand this. But they stopped even his 2D games. He probably could have salvaged Mirror of Fate if it was a collaborate effort between him and MercurySteam. Instead you got a game that really had no identity at all, and was a vapid release.

Depends.

If I remember right, SotN was actually made using 3D polygons, then flattened, because the PS1's architecture made that easier. I could be remembering something else though.

Also, Guilty Gear is 2.5D and it's gorgeous.

One day in, and already close to $1.5M. Damn.

And seriously, some people need to chill. There's a month left to fund this. I think the fact that they seem a little unprepared for the flood of support (and frankly, unrealistic demands on their time) is a positive thing that reflects that this is something players truly want.

I seriously doubt this. Who knows though, that's some serious money put into the campaign.

I would have thought that there'd be 10 achievements completed by now. Apparently not. A new boss is a very welcome stretch goal though.

Well, what I'm hoping is that they give us a list of effects and how many we can choose to for the weapon parameters in addition to the design. Then they'll balance it out from there. That's the ideal situation for me. Just letting us design whatever we wanted for stats would be silly but not giving us a little bit of that would be kind of sad too. =(

Man the way they are handling the updates is a disaster. This has completely overwhelmed them. The achievements were a terrible idea. In their design. If they just kept it to stuff like Iga cosplaying it would be fine.

I've participated in another campaign with a similar goal and they just let me design whatever and went back and forth with the developers to balance it.

Better design something huge and slow moving so we can notice the art with each attack.
Like the Runesword in SotN, or any shield I guess.

That's the best way, imo, they'll tweak your idea to work with the game, but still let your imagination run wild, after all, you could have a more interesting idea (after tweaked and balanced) than they would have offered you as a possible effect.

Yeah, definitely agreed. I don't think anyone - especially their team - figured they'd get ALL of this hit within hours, let alone triple their goal in a little over a day.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now on updates.

WTF is the crystal lense?

And here's how you unlock them:

Also, I think it's a bit unrealistic to get 15 cosplays (5 for each character) by the end of the kickstarter period, no? Unless they use the term cosplay loosely.

.

not a speedrun

Seriously. If they thought they'd get everything the first day, we probably would have seen larger goals.

Make it something like Power Increases the longer it doesn't get used > Sustains Power Level for set amount of time > Reset

Most speed runners out maneuver there enemies and when they do fight they want it to end quickly this lets them do that directly appropriate to their skill in speed running.

I was thinking more something like "the swing pushes you forward faster than walking but it deals damage to you" or something like that

Too bad they made some shitty games instead.

The numbers on the higher ones seem crazy high, something I was worried about when they were not updating them in real time. Like they went back and decided what the next step was before showing it unlocked. Next step for kickstarter backers is like double what it is now, with another step after it. Shit is too high. I'm worried about them doing the same thing for stretch goals now too.
