Marvel's Daredevil |OT| Legally Blind *spoilers for all of S1*

I wish finished the season. Show is awesome, I find it amazing that in this world, somewhere Spiderman is there swinging his web.


I really liked the female protagonist, and besides never being able to deal with the fact that she looks exactly like a friend of mine (which hurt seeing her as her own character). I though she was fascinating. Also Daredevil is a lot like Batman wow, which means Batman can be perfect for a series.

The Kingpin is the best Marvel Villain right now, he was done perfectly.
 
I liked Karen and Foggy. No complaints, fuck the haters. Great show and Fisk was great. I was a bit annoyed at the race swap for Urich but the actor did an amazing job. Such a good series.
 
I'm glad DD stayed a tv show. Immediately after seeing AoU, I thought it could've benefited being told in a tv format. DD was able to flesh out what the MCU mostly lacks, a compelling villain (save Loki). I won't go into any spoilers, but AoU just felt like it needed several more hours to make its story cohesive.
 
So a few things I didnt like:

- The whole thing with Stick. I know its a superhero story but I just had to roll my eyes watching 9-10 year old Matt doing ninja flips and shit all over the place. Cmon. It just felt so corny and cringy. I also hate Stick as a human.

- Too many unnecessary flipping and theatrics in the fights. I get that they look cool but does he really need to 360 spin kick a lock open?

- Nobu was cool. Wish he stuck around longer.

- Fisk's THECITYTHECITYTHECITYTHECITY. Why does he love the city so much? Why? I also wish we got to see his rise to power. How he went from a homicidal zuppa eating kid to the kingpin.

- I liked this sensitive, loner portrayal of Fisk but every other sentence he sounded somewhere between bursting into tears and losing his breath. That kind of got old and annoying fast.

- I just really didnt give a shit about Foggy. Karen I can understand but Foggy was just comic relief. Most of the time he was just corny.

I am also glad it got released for those who like it. But besides the title theme, I did not really like the music, or even remember it.
I wish we would have finally gotten a SHIELD soundtrack. But I guess if one gets released, the other is at least a bit more likely to follow, so I hope the Daredevil soundtrack does sell.

I think generally the less you think about it the better. THe more you analyze this show the more it's weaknesses start to appear, like useless characters and subplots, weak motivations and undeveloped setting. But it's not supposed to be deep crime drama, even if it's shot like one. It's still superhero show and I was just glad to see some grit and brutality in the genre, even if it was just skin dip.
I also would rate it 7/10 as a whole, but mostly because it hit the wall in it's last act. Episodes 1-9 batch was a lot better.

Yeah, after watching it, I felt like AoU would have worked better as a three-part miniseries. Too much stuff happening and it still didn't have enough to flesh itself out.

Daredevil definitely worked as a TV series as opposed to a movie, although I feel like it either should have ended after about 10 episodes, or lasted until 17. It felt like the last few episodes were rushed.

Hell's Kitchen is a neighborhood in Manhattan. It's basically a 1/2 mile X 1 mile rectangle. So yes, it's tiny.
 
Christ, what the fuck was that with Gao pushing DD back in episode 12?

That was almost, almost a 'jump the shark' moment for me. I felt compelled to immediately switch off.

Because it's too much to watch an old woman who possibly has powers of some sort that have yet to be revealed push a blind man who sees things on fire and fights crime back with incredible force in a world where Thor and robot warrior Iron Man exist?

Like it or not, the show is set in the same city that Thor's been flying around. I mean it's shot realistically but... yeah.

I found Gao easily the best Villain in the show and that just added to it. There were hints that she was not just an old lady through out the show. I want to see more of Gao and the hand more then Fisk. I really can't wait for Iron fist as he seems to have a lot to do with all that stuff.

The discordant tone kind of bugs the shit out of me, honestly. All the movies have been somewhat goofy, but DD plays it straight to the point that the sporadic mentions of the events of A1 and the MCU at large seem wildly out of place.

Daredevil deals with supernatural undead ninja assassins and ancient warring mystical clans. That was just hinting at the mystical side of the MCU. Wait till we get Dr Strange and Iron Fist.

Demons and magic in the same world as alien gods and super-soldiers

It's different in the MCU. For starters, it's substantially bigger. Like, a whole borough. Secondly, it was, according to the MCU once a shit hole neighborhood that became gentrified. This is what happened in real life. What didn't happen in real life, is a giant alien invasion that destroyed a huge chunk of that borough. That caused another white flight and property owners abandoning damaged buildings or selling off adjacent places before the neighborhood went to drug dealers and the like.

This is why Fisk is always on about his city. It was a shithole when he grew up. It became something more. Then he watched it get turned back into a shithole and thought "Hey, I can do something about this and also become the de facto owner of the entire borough").

So, he started buying up the properties with the intention of returning it to its former glory. Unfortunately, not everybody did, or could afford to, leave.

And then the show begins.
 
Just finished the series last night and loved every minute of it. They really nailed the "street level" hero. It was a great beginning and I can't wait to see where they will go next.

My main curiosity is who Stick was talking to in that dojo? Looks like a big baddie that will maybe step in now that Wilson "Don't call him Kingpin" Fisk is in jail.

And also, the amount of ground they cover is way, way too large for the how the neighborhood is IRL. Put two and two together and you have an element that only makes sense if the MCU Kitchen is much bigger than it actually is.

...or just writing from people who have never lived in that neck of the city.

  • The deeper things got, the more I found myself getting annoyed with Karen
  • Vincent D'nofrio deserves an Emmy nomination
  • Ben Ulrich's death and funeral hit me harder than I expected it to, even though I saw it coming
  • Scott Glenn was a great choice for Stick
  • Needs more Rosario Dawson
  • I quite liked Foggy's character. Not too annoying, and has some good bro moments

Overall, probably the best show I've watched in years. 9.5/10.

I would echo all of these sentiments exactly. Foggy took awhile to grow on me though.

I'm amazed at how much I grew to love Cox as Murdock- it was a tough sell for the first episode, but he really embodies that character in a way that is very natural and human. He seems vulnerable, perhaps even a bit passive on the surface, but he has "the devil" brewing underneath, and it was cool to see him unleash it. He also nailed the stubborn, never say die attitude.

Really? IIRC they just showed the vicinity where Hell's Kitchen is at on that map you're talking about.

And the street names they talk about are all within the real Hell's Kitchen. So at least that's accurate.

I think they just assume that most people watching this show knows nothing about NYC and treated the location that way. Plus its really the comic that started the association between Daredevil and Hell's Kitchen and they kept the show consistent with that.

Aside from being a terrible actor, the dude is hard to look at. His two love interests were laughable and distracting. As if those gorgeous women would ever go for a guy like that.

Cox and D'Onofrio were perfect, though.

Huh. I guess I never clocked that. I always thought the streets being mentioned were within the neighborhood, or at least immediate area if not technically in the boundaries of HK.
 
I liked Foggy well enough. What I didn't understood is how he could be dating Karen and being into her and then just suddenly bang his Ex. Now banging his Ex is nothing out of the ordinary, since he was dealing with some heavy stuff. The problem was that we didn't seen him tell Karen anything, even missing the funeral when doing some investigating with the Ex. And Karen didn't gave two shits or even acknowledge anything, and now Karen and Murdock are hinted to be a future love interest? So bizarre.
 
I think that whole storyline was about how Foggy was really into Karen, but Karen was really into Matt. So even when Foggy thought they were doing date type stuff, Karen never thought they did.

Even when Mrs. Cardenas tried to get them to date Karen was like "oh, you mean Matt?"

Poor Señor Foggy.
 
I liked Foggy more once they gave his character more screen time. Enjoyed the episode where he was calling Matt out for his bs. Also enjoyed how he has relationships outside from the 'central cast' people. I could never understand why they have to in-date within the cast, in some series.

D'Onofrio's Fisk is just very spot on. Best character from the series, hands down. I also like Wesley's sliminess. Very nice portrayal. And I adore the friendships between Fisk and Wesley. Gah.

The way D'Onofrio speaks as if in alternating bursts of restrained rage and genuine attempt at being human = <3

Everything was really nicely delivered in DD, in terms of its villains development. AoU suffered much due to its time constraints. Ultron could have been more legit villain if he had been given similar development time :(

Little things that I likey that I wanted to point out:
- Karen didn't have to be rescued or be played out as a mcguffin that would bring matt and foggy back together when she was taken by Wesley
- Claire and Matt's relationship
- Marci is awesome
- Love how Vanessa is not the 'moral compass wife' trope character. Has seen much of the gangster's boss' wife is the one with the good morals that always try to steer their husbands towards good enough already. Really enjoyed how Fisk and Vanessa are so in love with each other.
- Leland Owsley - terrific delivery. Played the bumbling old man to a perfection only to reveal that he's not as doddering as he pretends to be.
- Theme song is boss.
- Fight choreography <3
- Violently violencenessness <3333333333

Stuff that probably could be worked on better:
- The costume. Maybe i just need some time to let it grow on me. I miss the black mask get up though.
- Karen has too many annoying moments
- Stick
- Mrs. Cardenas is such a boring tropey character :(



Ugh, now I have to go back to Flash/Arrow/Gotham.

Which brings us back to my original question...

Just finished the season. Good show, but I thought it blew its load early on and never really topped the first two episodes. The second half in particular was when things not only began to drag, but when budget constraints started to become noticeable. Sets became increasingly repetitive, the inspired cinematography and filming techniques from early episodes had faded, and the fights weren't as strong. In the finale where Matt saves the crooked cop that Fisk needed dead, you only hear the sounds of the fight as the camera focuses on the cop's closed eyes. I know what they were going for, but it just reeked of "we didn't have the money to do this fight." There were a few scenes like that down the stretch. Again, a bit of a far cry from the ambitious tone that was set in the beginning

I thought the final fight was okay, as was the Daredevil suit, but I could've done without the sudden money shot cheese of badly done slo-mo and hero poses that were uncharacteristic of the show and The Mask's ruggedness the whole way through before those moments... I also grew tired of Karen as the season went on. She made a number of bad decisions, and I couldn't buy that it wasn't totally her fault that Ben got killed. Don't know why they wrote it that way.

Having said all that, man that was a killer first two episodes. Cox is great in the role, and Fisk was awkwardly acted at times, but a good refreshing take on a villain.
 
Finished yesterday, I'd agree with the sentiments that the second half of the season was where it trailed off a little, but still great overall. Loved the final Fisk/DD fight, not too OTT, it was just right. Cool that Fisk is alive in prison too, I genuinely felt bad for Vanessa waiting by that helicopter.

I still stand by my stance that "Stick" is an awful episode, an awful character and a blight on the rest of the series.

Gao punching DD is still hysterical to me. Regardless of this being part of the MCU where Thor and Iron Man exist, this show to me portrayed itself as being very realistic and gritty. I'm sorry, but I just can't buy that old woman punching DD and knocking him back, it's just silly.

She was clearly using magic/powers. Also, her true nature isn't all that clear, really. Is she actually an old human woman?

Just finished watching the series with my wife a couple of days ago. We both loved it. I really appreciate shows/movies where the antagonist is given proper time and development, so they´re not simply just another bad-guy needed to be rid from the world.

Vincent D´onofrio was absolutely outstanding as Fisk. Hell, i found his character more interesting than Matt Murdock overall. The fight scenes were great (dat hallway fight and matt vs the red ninja), as were the pacing of the episodes.

Can´t wait for another season.
 
So, an old woman knowing how to throw a punch is the unrealistic part of a show about a blind ninja that can hear lies and smell what you ate for dinner 7 days ago in your flatulence?

You may not have notices that Karen body language always hinted at Murdock from the very beginning. She always talks about him with a different tone.

I get what you mean but you have Matt "I am blind but can actually see everything...in flames" Murdoch leading, the show isn't all that realistic.

Gao giving DD some good ol' taijutsu was nice to see, though. I cannot wait for Iron Fist.

Edit: Hating on Foggy?! Dude's a total bro.
