Now that is just depressing.

Just when I was ready to leave this thread, happy with what I was getting.

You know what, it simply looks to me they went for parity with AMD based systems, the AMD based consoles match up to an AMD based PC - and if you want a better looking PC version you need an Nvidia based PC (so you get the gameworks feature).

I still think the game looks good (and well, i got it for £11.50), but it is a shame that seeing as though I'm on an AMD based PC i likely won't get a better looking version of the game over a PS4 bar a better framerate.

In my experience, being an AMD user means always having to turn off NVIDIA features in games so that they can run above 15 fps. I wish developers would turn them off by default on AMD systems...

100% agree with that, they have handled the entire situation very poorly.

I'm not even mad the game has changed. It is a gorgeous game. That 4k German video(not on Youtube) looks incredible. It's the best looking open-world game I've ever seen.

I'm more annoyed with CDPR as a developer/company/publisher/whateverthefuckelsetheydo/gog being so secretive about the whole thing. Unless. Unless they really do have a big surprise in store. But it sadly doesn't seem that way.

its the same, or at least the closest thing to it in the final game

link to video?

I seriously hope not.
fuck.

Let's see, land in the distance doesn't match up
No sail in the second shot
First shot is sunny, second is maybe sunset? Or something burning in the background.

What would you propose are the downgrades here then?

It's like there's a major light source missing. Like the sun or something. Can't quite put my finger on it.

What exactly are we talking about again? Are we still trying to "prove" the downgrade?

Real life downgrades around 9 PM. Check it out people! God is ripping us all off!

I'm outta here. My whole day is fucked! FUCKED! CDPR have handled this very poorly to say the least. It's their first time doing a simultaneous multi plat release, so they seem out of their depth in terms of release management and PR. So I kinda feel sorry for them, but I'm also really annoyed for spending so much time analyzing obsolete crap. MOTHERFUCKING FUCK!

Bye!

He'll be back. They always come back. ;)

Sure thing.

I think most are at the acceptance phase. And some of us are at the hopeful magical day one patch release phase.

Besides the sail lines being down, and the sail being gone, Geralt is also wearing a completely different outfit.

So I guess the answer to my previous question about how you're viewing the game was a "yes" then? You kind of set yourself up to feel this way. You should just embrace cynicism. You'd probably be happier for it.

Sure thing.

It looks nice and all, but they did a really strange job implementing wind. All of the trees are swaying and bending like they are in the middle of a tornado, yet Geralt's hair doesn't blow in the same direction?

Lol no just coming to accept it. At least I'll get decent framerates out of my 770.

ReShade take the wheel.

look at the brunette chicks hair. its much simplified. the skin turned from being solid by video game standards to the same awful wax looking shading from gen 7

And the obvious lack of Ciri in the first shot :p. The only really similar thing is Triss' crossing her arms, but she does do that a lot. And Yennefer's hair change I guess.
Funny how Ciri has the same pose as Geralt though :lol. Maybe it's intentional.

If you look close enough you can see that they clearly remodeled her, her face (especially her eyes) are very different. Though that may just be the angle.

its a much simpler model with a much simpler shading. since when is that not a downgrade?

Took a shower. I'm calm now. Did I miss any new update?

Eh? The answer is still no. I was livid because they are being incompetent and wasting my time. Not because I'm hoping the game looks better. I spent hours this morning pouring over every screenshot, seeing what tech is missing where, just to find out Yennefer is wearing underwear when she shouldn't be, Geralt has his silly looking toupee on and the build is obsolete!

I'm far more cynical than you think I am. I'm as cynical of downgrade claims as I am of CDPR. That's the problem. There's just way too much confirmation bias on both sides of this debate for me to partake in it. Everybody is just waiting for the moment to announce that they were right all along and how others should follow their infallible approach to logical thinking. I've tried my best to ignore all that and stay level headed and technical. What riled me up today is incompetence and piss poor communication, which CDPR is clearly guilty of by their own admission. You shouldn't be fucking up review builds 3 days before launch. It shows that you don't have your act together at all.

Comparing scenes under drastically different lighting conditions gives me a headache.

I dunno, the first 1.5 minutes of that video the forest just looks like a forest to me. *shrug*

Trees that aren't tightly grouped together will bend and sway like that. I think what it is, is that people generally relate things to what is close to them. So if for example you don't have pines where you live, when you see them in a game and they don't exactly act like the.. say dogwood trees that you do live by, it can throw you off. It did for me at least.

I'm hoping to find a forest similar to the forest that surrounded Flotsam myself. With giant ass trees and old bridges. Or a swamp forest that is similar to the one near Vizima. I'm hoping.

This game is seemingly bigger than any open-world RPG I've played and I'm hoping to discover some really cool things.

I'm not seeing how the model is that much simpler. It's missing the light source and she's standing at a different angle. Everything else about the face looks like it's pretty much the same, and you can't really tell on the hair because it's too dark.

It's not even just the tree type. It's the fact that in the majority of the shown footage so far, there's almost never a scene where the trees aren't moving like that. Like on that world, the wind never stops. Unless it hits Geralt's hair of course. But that's probably just magic he uses to keep his hair nice and straight right? And I've seen pine trees sway in the wind. They don't constantly bend like plastic, or someone trying to touch their toes.

Seriously, rewatch the first few minutes. You will see trees bending wildly, while a SHRUB that's about 1/10th the diameter barely sways at all. The physics are just immersion breaking.

No, no... my point is not whether there's a downgrade or not. I'm in the "I don't give a fuck" crowd, so I find the whole thing highly amusing. This thread will probably continue to be much busier than the OT next week.

So... long story short: what is general consensus on the downgrade? Are graphics that much tragic? How's PS4 against PC? Please, can someone brief me up? Thank You.

its plenty light enough to see how much simpler the model and skin shading is. the fact that neither her hair, nor any characters skin looks like that original shot under any lighting conditions in the final build says it all

most users agree there was a hefty downgrade, a few still think there wasnt. very few people think the graphics look bad, i find them to be pretty standard for an early multiplat. nothing impressive. pc version = ps4 version with hair works, some very slight lod improvements, and resolution/framerate that scale with your pcs power.

Here's one reason comparing dark nighttime shots with daytime shots is dumb.

Notice how the lit part shows more/different details? Lightsources affect how your assets are shaded. Duhh

PS4 and Xbone vers look great. PC version doesn't look all that much better though, but still great. So we're getting a great looking game, that looks better than Witcher 2, in an open world. Good enough for me!

Crazy that this thread is approaching 5000 posts when the game hasn't even been released and we have no hard facts either way. I don't feel the need to comment until the official release date is out and we can have some 1:1 comparisons.

But can we not say ToD as a dismissal when we know the lighting engine was indeed downgraded for the newer images? Let's not keep skipping that just because ToD varies.

One era of W3 media seems to stun just about anyone, and the other era of W3 media leading to release is underwhelming masses of people in comparison. And it isn't that the team changed colors and is bad at picking ToD starting in 2014 all of a sudden.

Amen, although I'm willing to give my two cents at times.

Honestly? I think people just want to talk tech specs about Witcher 3. It looks damn good.

im aware of the difference between day and night, however skin does not magically turn to wax under low light conditions. besides, we have plenty of shots with ample light to see how simple the models/shading have become

It's wind?

But to a degree, I do see where you're coming from. I'd be surprised if there isn't some kind of tweak either by .ini or a future mod that'll let us adjust it. As I agree, I worked in a giant ass valley very close to an ocean for 5 years and there was wind all the time and tress still didn't blow like that. It's a bit overdone, but I can appreciate having movement in the background as opposed to an always flat dead environment were nothing moves. But I do want to tone it back, juuuusssssttt a smidge.

It's funny, I keep looking at this gif and don't know which version I like better.

If what you say is true... Then I'm happy with that. :) It was obvious that 2013 trailer is only a dream even for a PC (at launch). What is more dissapointing is the color palette and how CDP handled this whole affair. 2013 trailer had that Witcher 2 look. I guess we need to get used to it. Now about CDP... as a fellow kinsman, I'm ashamed and truly sorry to every gamer. CDP won the heart and minds of gamers by being true and honest. If I was a CDP CEO the heads would roll...

I was about to post the exact same thing lol.

Here's something I just don't understand.

Assuming the downgrade is due to parity (which seems kind of tin foil hat at surface level to think CDPR would do this until I read a dev supposedly flat out confirmed this was the reason, not to mention a few other games most notably Watch Dogs did this for the same reason), I just fail to understand why there must be parity. Unless Microsoft or Sony is paying them boatloads of cash, I see no reason for them to maim the PC version so it doesn't look better by leaps and bounds. I get the reasoning behind parity, so console gamers don't feel like they purchased an inferior product. But why must console gamers not feel like they purchased an inferior product? If you want the graphically better version, get or a build a powerful gaming PC and get it on PC. If you can't afford that, well sorry but that's life. As a general rule better products are usually more expensive. That's like saying Ferrari should use the same engine the Nissan Versa is using, so Nissan Versa owners don't feel like they bought a slower and all around inferior car. Where's the logic in that? (may not be a perfectly translatable analogy but you get the idea).

Of course there could be other reasons, like over-ambition and then facing the reality that they overextended themselves, or not having time to make a PC version then port a downgraded version to consoles. But parity seems so obvious because for whatever reasons dev's like to do this, I'm just not sure why unless money is involved, and I don't take CDPR as the greedy type. Whatever the case, it's just really disheartening to see CDPR turn out like this, and consoles certainly had some part in that.

Wait, what's this I'm reading about them shipping out an earlier build now? That seems like a colossal mistake too hard to miss before they went gold. I'll be dumbfounded if this patch greatly improves graphics and/or makes it look like the 2013 trailer. But I feel they are greatly over-exaggerating the so called improvements this patch will bring.

Wow at that mountain in the first gif. It's pretty much an entirely different mountain range. Also the LoD is all downgraded. Hoping you'll be able to modify that on PC at least for rigs that are capable of doing crazy shit.
