The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

Anyone else so excited for this and nothing else, they just keep cycling through all the different Witcher threads barely checking the rest of Gaf?

Sadly yes. But then there's not really anything else I'm looking forward to until Xenoblade X gets a western release.

I've never played a Witcher game.

I feel like the hype is going to make me buy this. Am I going to be completely lost with the lore? Or will it be like Dragon Age where it's somewhat easy to jump in part-way through the series?

Do you really think any company would make their biggest game so far make their users lost?

Everyone says it's easy to jump in.

There is a really good infographic several pages back that is helpful. There's a Witcher wiki, too. I don't expect it would be difficult to start with W3

The devs and those who've played the game have said it eases you in regardless of your previous experience. Apparently it does a decent job pulling new players into the world.

There's an infogram that explains the previous story in bite size chunks, go back a few pages to find it.

Edit: here you go.

Got both the PC and the PS4 version. I'm in Ludwigshafen, Germany and every store here is selling it, Saturn, Media Markt and Gamestop. Witchin time y'all.

You thought Dragon Age was good in this regard? I honestly thought Inquisition's story was hilariously intertwined with the previous game's, especially considering DA2's reception.

Posted some impressions yesterday.

I have the X1 version and it looks and place very nicely. Haven't ran into any issues yet.

Based on about 7 hours of play...no spoilers. Haven't been this addicted to a game since Dark Souls.

Visuals: I love the art style...the graphics look great, character models look great, especially the key characters. Most importantly, the world is vibrant and full of life. Really digging it.

Audio: Voice acting is top notch just like how it was for TW2. But the best part is the music...it's so fucking good. It goes so well with the whole dark fantasy setting. Haven't enjoyed music in an RPG this much since Xenoblade.

Story/Character: I haven't gotten into too much yet, but I loved the beginning. I like what I've seen so far but I may be biased here since I know the backstory and the lore of the Witcher universe which that helps me enjoy the game much more. Anyone who hasn't played any of the games should do themselves a favor and watch and read recaps of the characters and kingdoms.

Gameplay:
1) Combat. The Combat has much improved here from TW2. But at the same time, it's not as polished as a game like Bloodborne. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and I can see myself improving after each fight. There are various enemies I've faced that I needed to kill using certain methods, which I found awesome.

2) Sidequests. Definitely not Dragon Age (I did enjoy DA:I but found most optional stuff quite boring). The Sidequest I just did in the first area was much better better than 99% of most open world games of recent memory. It had a unique back story to it that was actually interesting. Anyone who played TW2 knows how well CDPR handles their optional stuff...they do more than just collect this and that.

3) Exploration. Have I mentioned how beautiful this world is? Not only that, it's huge. Lots to explore and discover. I've only seen a tiny percent of what's out there. I already feel immersed.

4) Controls/Settings/Other. Controls feel nice...there was a slight learning curve but now I've got the hang of it. Settings are awesome...I've adjusted the HUD to remove some of the annoying things to let me play more "freely". I really like that these options are available. Lastly, performance has been good so far. Haven't seen any bugs or huge drops on the frame rate.

So far, I fucking love this game. Any questions you guys have, feel free to ask away.

So, what's the language to go with in this game? I know it's a polish developer, but what language synchronizes orignally with the character lips?(basically: what's the lead language?). At the start of playing Witcher 2 I tried german, english and polish audio. English was the one I went with, because it sounded better back then.

Even if you start with Witcher 1, you're still jumping into the lore in the middle of things.

The developers themselves have designed the game consciously for this, they've said it themselves you will not need to have played the first two in order to enjoy this and the story. There may be a few references you'll miss out on but nothing important, just small things that won't really make an important impact.

Even their marketing shows it off how they changed it, it's not marketed as "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" it's more marketed as "The Witcher: Wild Hunt" where they still retain the "3" as a claw mark but it's unsuspecting unless you've heard a lot about the series. If you've been oblivious or never heard of it, you'll more likely pick it up instead of thinking "I should play the other 2 first".

E.g, early marketing:

vs new marketing

So yeah, either put trust in the developers and go into Witcher 3 new (a lot of people are doing this) or at the least play or watch a lets play of Witcher 2 if you don't.

I played Witcher 1 when it initially came out and Witcher 2, when I went into Witcher 2 it wasn't really that important to have played the first at all so I think Witcher 3 is going to be even less so.

Even if you start with Witcher 1, you're still jumping into the lore in the middle of things.

Yeah but they set it up so Geralt has amnesia and has to learn a lot of things about the world again. And in 2 he gets his memories back so the player learns more about his past in time for Witcher 3 :p

Can PS4 controller work with PC version without installing 3rd drivers?
Should i buy Xbone controller if not?

I have the 360 controller and tbh i hate it with a passion. The hardness of the buttons and shitty dpad, it is only good for twitch FPS.

Yeah, should be working with a DS4, even with the right buttons.

Gunna keep asking as more and more articles pop up. Are there any Witcher 3 impressions from people who did not like the mechanics of Witcher 1 and 2?

Game is AMAZING. Played nonstop 11 hours. Completed every sidequest/contract/story mission in the starting area
White Orchard
.

This game feels just what I expected it to be.

The only problem I encountered is that the game crashes when I skip my turn in Gwent. Day 1 patched is installed. Its really annoying.

What system you gaming on? PS4?

Somebody with the game needs to go find (returning char spoilers I guess???)
Roche and Iorveth
. I need to know the quest name they are on or where they are on the game map so I can see what they are up to lol. I guess I'll be scoping them out in a couple days.

I really like what they are doing with this design. Stylized 3 isn't obvious 3 as it looks like outlines of helmet or claw marks. Basically encourages people to pick it up from shelve and have a look at it as it's not obviously 3rd game in franchise.

Someone with early copy needs to show us what is written to backside of sleeve and box itself.

I'm sure theres more I just dont know them but the only press guy I can think of that really hated Witcher 2 is Jim Sterling and he hasnt reviewed W3. Although, he loves Dynasty Warriors so his opinion doesnt matter anyway. ; )

Man, WHY did this get such high scores???! I'm so conflicted.

I tried to play Witcher 2 three times in the last 4 years and never got further into it than 3h because I was bored every time, didn't like the systems and thought it controlled horribly (tried mouse+keyboard as well as 360 controller).

I love story driven games where you feel the epicness of dire moments, companionship and heroism born out of necessity. Witcher 3's story is probably exactly that, but if most of it is gameplay that I don't care for at all (it's not that I dislike fantasy rpg hack'n'slash gameplay, I played over 60h of Shadow of Morder just for the gameplay and didn't care for the story at all, but Witcher 2's... *yawn*).

I think you just helped me. Thanx

Well Jim said he is waiting for PC release of Witcher 3 before taking a look at it. I would expect something by next Friday.

My Xbox preload is ready. Man I haven't been this excited to play a game in a long time. Shame I'm working so many hours next few weeks :(

I've heard several different things. Does anyone know if this game the last of The Witcher series? Or just the conclusion of Geralt's story? Or neither?

I'd be surprised if CD Projekt RED discontinued the series considering the acclaim and sales numbers this game is likely to put up, but some of the devs past comments seem to suggest it.

It is the conclusion of Geralt's story, unlikely to be the last Witcher game, the series future probably to star a different protagonist.

Last of Geralt.
