Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

I'm tempted to up my pledge for the art book too. But then I'm afraid I'll think "Oh, what's another $100 for that $250 pledge, I'm nearly there!". Then, once I fail to resist and move up to the $250 tier, I'll eyeball the $300 one. "It's only another $50, and I'll get both the slipcover and OST signed by Iga and Yamane!"

Goodbye, money. ;_;

You might as well join me at the $2,100 tier and design a weapon that will be in the game. You know you want to.

By the looks of it today's update prompted many of you to upgrade because the pledges were unnaturally high judging from the average of the last few days.

I just want that extra achievement to see the whole dungeon level!

PS: we're still very low on gargoyles, you guys! I already submitted mine, we need help lol.

Wait, you put that moneys in? You know what must be done.

Oh man. Kojima's involvement has probably solidified me going in on at least the $125 tier...though the art book...AAAAH.
They've so far said Kojima is making only one art for the special cover for the $100 tier. Don't get too excited and then cry foul if we didn't get more Kojima work in the art book.

THIS JUST IN: 30 achievements unlocked (hit that 2,000 tumblr reblog one). They already confirmed the upgraded graphics and, I assume, announcement of the dungeon level stretch goals is imminent.

As they should be since we're past the last stretch goal.

Any minute now.

Don't bet on it updating too fast. Has taken hours at other times.

True.

I get them falling behind for hours during the first day since it was climbing so fast but you'd think they'd be ready for today's. They knew they were going to hit the $2.75 million goal and the 30 achievements.

Not harping too much on this. I'm sure they're hard at it right now even though it stopped climbing fast days ago.

I just translated this Bloodstained interview from game*spark, thought y'all would like to take a gander: http://shmuplations.com/bloodstained/

It mentions the Lesser Keys of Solomon, the Laki volcano eruption in 1783, gender stuff, character design...

(first post, woo, finally got off my lazy ass and finished the registration i started 2? 3? years ago)

Thanks a lot for this!

So exciting to see him consciously think outside his comfort zone to create a female protagonist. It's not his first, but he is making a deliberate effort and that is awesome.

I do hope the game is harder than SotN though.

I'm not defending the PSP script from failing to more accurately translate the game (I'd have to know more to even judge that), but Igarashi has gone on record often about finding the original dub to be cringe worthy, and that a big goal of his when they decided to put SotN on the Dracula X Chronicles as a bonus was to "correct" the dub. I understand the appeal of the original, but I do not understand why there are so many who swear that the PSP dub is worthless or ruins the PSP release. Like I said, Igarashi has gone on record on more than a few occasions in his dissatisfaction with the original dub, and said in interviews about DXC that he really wanted to "fix" the dub, and was glad he finally could.
He probably wasn't in the best position to see it, but the original dub was one of those special cases where its terrible initially but grows on you and becomes a classic bland perhaps not entirely in a "so bad it's good" way. It did kind of feel like redoing that was akin to reacting to the initial backlash and ignoring how people felt later on, but IGA really may have been like someone who couldn't get past that initial impression BECAUSE it was his game rather than someone else's.

Upped my pledge from 28 to 60 bucks - That's a lot. I was under the impression that the "Kickstarter-exclusive" items would be available in all Digital Copies, but I guess not.

I would pledge a little more for the Artbook, but I can't justify all the other "junk" that comes with it's tier, plus shipping, plus waiting god knows how long for customs (I don't live in the US) and the inevitable 60% import tax. I'm beyond physical copies of games at this point, and all the knickknacks are not that interesting to me. Besides, Kojima is only doing the cover and i'm sure a .JPG of it will be available eventually, so... eh. I wish there was a digital copy of it.

I am somewhat disappointed that the kickstarter-exclusive content is only available on a 60 dollar tier. That makes sense when you take into consideration pressing disks/artwork/case for a physical copy, not so much on a digital one.

So it's only claim to fame is that it told Castlevania's version of 'spoony bard' to go to hell.
I understand, I appreciate the "second take though for its unique script and since it may be closer to the author's original intent.
I hate hearing that kind of stuff, but I guess it can't be helped.
Well, from the translated shmuplations interview, it doesn't sound to me like they are forcing anything. It is understandable why they would change the "rival" relationship into something different, though they certainly don't "need" to. I'm not worried about it too much. The "gross, heinous" ideas they mention seems to imply the game may have had more crystal body horror planned before Miriam came around, but it sounds like they aren't throwing out those ideas just yet, just evaluating them.
On a side note, I bet this game's best ending probably involves somehow figuring out the secret to reversing the effects of a major necessary advancement of the curse in order to enhance Miriam's powers. Perhaps for the second best ending in order to rid the curse of the castle and for Gebel, Miriam has to acquire a deadly new upgrade that opens up new more hellish areas of the castle, but at knowing cost of her life at the coming dawn (no in game time limit, just narrative time limit). But if the player figures out how to reverse, or perhaps more interestingly, temporarily absorb and then shed this curse/power with some special item that keeps it at a "surface/skin level", they can unlock the best ending, which might require some final stretch through the castle after dawn break to rid the curse completely. Pretty cool idea I think, I'm sure they can come up with something to satisfy :).
I do hope the game is harder than SotN though.
Well, the main game is likely to be based on SotN's difficulty as he mentions, but the "Nightmare difficulty" was one of the earliest stretch goals, so I'd expect a harder mode to satisfy pros to be one of his top priorities. Just hope it isn't something locked behind a first play through though ;).
IGA really may have been like someone who couldn't get past that initial impression BECAUSE it was his game rather than someone else's.
Yeah, I expect so. As I said above, I appreciate both takes on the story, they provide two equally valid perspectives in my opinion.

Uh huh, I don't personally mind the $60 tier to have the "backer exclusive content" since I've always planned on the physical version, but I think it would be best to keep the physical version as its own reward. Rather than subtly implicating that those who donate at the $28 tier are not "worthy" of "backer exclusive content", no matter how intentional or unintentional it is, they should have all copies of the game acquired through backing include this stuff. Oh well.

Side not based on gripes with the tiers...
Does anyone else wish they didn't offer beta access? Personally, I'd say that it just dilutes the experience, and means if I want to go in as blind as possible (ie. Only trailers and officially released trailers), I'll have to avoid any beta videos X|. It's good for backers to get a glimpse of the game to see how well it is turning out, but the only acceptable beta that is releasable is more like a demo, one that has to probably have a fair amount of work dedicated specifically to it. And the actual testing purpose of a beta is mostly lost I would think in this context, it would probably only slow the bug checking and QA parts of development. Even a server stress test (if they were to have server based online co-op) would probably be too much for Inti Creates to maintain, so it seems to be the funding incentive most based in simply satisfying shorter term satisfactions of backers, rather than keeping the mystery of the game under relative wraps.
Of course the beta will most likely have only a small portion of the final game's content, but that just leads back into the point I made earlier about it not serving any practical and actionable wide community based QA and bug testing system, and more like a way for people to feel more like they are in an exclusive club. Don't get me wrong, I will like being in the exclusive club of backers, but beta access especially seems to be a little bit of a "carrot" dangling over people's heads right now.
(For full disclosure, I am not getting the Steam version, so perhaps I am slightly jealous only they get beta access. However, I am also glad that I then cannot be tempted to "spoiling" the game's "feel" for myself.)

I'm sorry if the answer to this is well known, but will there be a physical release of the game aside from the backer copies? Have they said anything?

They haven't but seeing how they already have a publisher I'd go on a limb and predict they will end up having them. At least for the PS4 and XB1 versions. I wouldn't be willing o bet on a PC and/or WiiU physical release although they could also happen.

It's 8pm in Japan, the office day comes to a close and still no update.

I was wrong. Six hours ago I really did think this update was coming any minute :(

I knew it!!!
Just doing the cover. The issue wasn't money anyway I think they had other commitments which prevented them to dedicate the time necessary to produce art for the game but doing a single cover illustration can be done at the same time.

I think Kojima is cool and all but also overrated. For me the best Castlevania artist of all time was the dude/dudette who worked on Order of Ecclesia. That's where it's at!

Personally I found OoE's art to be flat and drab. the rendering was nice, but the underylying artwork itself...I dunno.

Masaki Hirooka is his name and he's worked on some high-profile games since Ecclesia, including Xenoblade and Kid Icarus Uprising.

Another CV alum who's probably too busy/in-demand for this project is Akihiro Yamada, the guy who did the cover/manual art for Dracula XX:

I'm probably the only person who'd love to see this guy come back but they should totally give him a call, just for me.

I agree. Don't jeopardize your creative vision to suit the market. Yeah, you're in it to make a living, but I'd have liked it more if they were a little bit firmer, instead of catering towards whoever has money to flaunt, like those stupid in-game portraits to name an example.

Awesome.Once the basement stretch goals are revealed, I think I'll up my pledge. Get a digital copy as well as a physical, maybe get the artbook as well.

They did confirm Bloodstained will be getting a physical release outside the backer copies; they just will not include the Kickstarter extras.

If you need visual proof, just read the FAQ on the campaign page regarding the physical release. I'll post the snippet below in any event.

Will there be a physical release of the game after it comes out?

There will indeed be a physical release of the game in the future. However, the Kickstarter-exclusive box set is a celebration for fans willing to support IGA in his time of need, so the retail version of the game will not contain any of the Kickstarter-exclusive bonus content.

So, still not sure if I should back this, not having played IGA's past work.

Hype is getting to me though.

What GBA/DS Igavania game should a play to decide if this is something I'd like?

Figure I should give one a shot, and back this project if it impresses me.

Edit; thinking of buying Harmony of Dissonance off the Wii U Virtual Console. Is that a bad or good place to start?

Oh fantastic. I wonder how I missed that. Thanks :)
Making a boss exclusive to that version is annoying, but eh. I'll deal with it.

If you want to start with one GBA/DS game and only one, I recommend Aria of Sorrow on the GBA. Best of the bunch, easily. Followed by Order of Ecclesia, then Dawn of Sorrow (Direct sequel) and lastly Portrait of Ruin.

Harmony of Dissonance doesn't make my list. It's kinda OK, but it's the worst looking and sounding game.

It's good in the sense that every other Igavania you play will be better. Bad in the sense that it it not representative of the quality of the other games and might turn you off of trying the other games.

Not a problem! But yeah, it kinda blows but it's the nature of Kickstarter.

I rather just support them then with the retail release instead of blowing my money now with so many uncertainties in the air brought upon by the port job and what-have-you.

Oh shit, we got the Castle? TT_TT

Oh? What are the paypal pledges at?

I wonder if it'll be one giant castle, or if we'll get an inverted equivalent. If it's one castle, is that one bigger than sotn w/ normal and inverted combined counting as one big one?
