This is the same problem as streetpass, if you don't live in a city with an active amiibo or streetpass community you miss out on a lot of content for 3DS and Wii U.
If you do live in a city with an active community you can have a lot of fun though and I feel like the content that has been streetpass or amiibo-gated has always been secondary and more like cool extras or bonuses rather than locked essentials.
The game being $70 in Canada sucks though, I was hoping this was going to be another $40 game like Kirby.

When I heard about the streetpass feature, I thought I would be screwed since I live in a not very Nintendo-friendly country, but I was wrong. I used to get a lot of street pass activity in the first two or so years of the 3DS lifetime.
Amiibos is a different story. I imported the Squid Girl amiibo, but it is just too expensive for me to buy amiibos regularly, so I can't really access most of the amiibo locked content in the games. I am also quite minimalist when it comes to stuff in my room, but that is a totally different 'problem' and not Nintendo's "fault".

Splatoon get! Dogtag is pleasingly chunky and quality feeling. Squid Amiibo has some gunk on it and needs a clean though.

Didn't realize you can get the Squid with the game in Europe, in NA it's only with the 3-pack right?
Yep. In Europe it's only available in the Special Edition while NA and Japan only get it as part of the three-pack (which EU conversely doesn't get).
Mine is due in the next 5 minutes too. Are you in the Cheshire region bar chance ;-)

Yeah. I've just played my first three games. But on the fourth, I'm stuck on this bloody screen. None of the buttons do anything, except +, which activates the minigame you can play whilst waiting for opponents.
The servers are up. Don't know if there will be that many people online though.
That said it's pretty dumb that Nintendo didn't put in a better timeout check or the ability to x out of matchmaking. Seemed like it'd only become an issue at first if there was just no one playing but now I'm not so sure.

Mostly Japanese. But I have been playing with Europeans too.
My point is that amiibos are not that expensive when you live in the right community. I have spent a total of $45 Canadian on amiibos and have owned 9 different ones and currently own 6. Through smart initial purchases and trades I may never have to actually spend money on amiibos again.
This evening I am selling 2 of my 6 for $25 and saturday another 2 for $30 which will cover the Splatoon amiibo 3-pack.
I will still own 5 amiibos which is the max that can be used each day in Hyrule Warriors, in Mario Kart everything stays unlocked, I will still have 2 for use in Smash, all 5 will work with amiibo Tap, and I will be able to unlock everything in Splatoon.
I will hold onto the Splatoon amiibos for a while after I beat their challenges because I have the feeling Nintendo will add support for them in Mario Kart 8 at some point. The Inklings are a perfect fit for Mario Kart 8 as characters or racing suits.

Considering some people have their early copies already and Japan is looking to kick off sales strong, it's probably going to happen fairly soon.

The game just generally doesn't have much stuff that drives up the file size. No pre-rendered videos, minimal voice acting, and most of the maps are small contained areas. The soundtrack is probably also compressed.

I don't think you can set default hair. It's just whatever color it was in the last mode you played.
