Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

One of the best realized 2D characters ever; the amount of frames in each animation and the variety is kinda nuts.

I wish Bloodstained is going look like this, but I expect some kind of flash-game look in a 2.5D space..

I think they're using 3D models for characters and monsters, and aspiring for a Guilty Gear Xrd style cel shading. If you haven't seen that... check it out (be sure to watch in 60fps). Those are 3D models.

This is just what I've heard. Whether Bloodstained pans out to be anything like that... well, we'll see.

12,5 hours....... Sotn was a 20 hous plus game for me. Maybe because of my bad gaming skills. haha

Depending on how well hidden the secrets are, in reality, this is probably going to end up being a 10-20h game depeding on who plays it. It's what one might expect from this kind of game, so I think it's an appropriate game length. If there are any collecting elements in it I think we can probably expect to add another 10-20h for completionists though.

John Morris took it to new levels with his stair climb animation though. Those epileptic convulsions were enough to make any of Dracula's minions run in fright!
Yeah... :(

It was enough to make sure I never used him. I hated his animation work.

I wonder what would happend if a Vita stretch goal appeared.... A lot of angry gaffers I would expect.

Handhelds were hinted too, so it's certainly possible. Personally, if it's going to be put on a legacy handheld I'd prefer the GBA, but that's just me.

I would love this kind of game on a handheld. I backed Migthy no.9 for the vita version alone.

I pretty much prefer to play everything on a larger screen when I can. I played all the portable CV titles on GBA/DS because that's what they were on and they were fine on them.

If the budget is there I have zero issue with a Vita version being made.
GBA first though
depending on the engines used maybe the WiiU downport could work on the Vita as well

As long as it was given C-tier treatment by a third-party to downport to Vita/3DS/iPhone/your toaster, I'm okay with it.

Don't need weak calculators compromising my masterpieces.

Hey, if they're porting it to everything else, they might as well port it to the TI-series calculators.

As a Castlevania fan. It's good to see many people still loving these type of games.
Castlevania, as a franchise, is older than me. Its legacy alone assured that this was going to get funded from day 1.

No demand for this kind of game. No, sir.

I understand publishers are afraid due to the ever rising costs of game development. However I wish there never was this disconnect between the public who wants these games showing an actual demand and the companies that "think" they believe that said demand doesn't exist.

It's unfortunate they only see the bottom line. Understandable, it IS a business.

I just wish that gaming relevancy wasn't divided between Indie and AAA and nothing in the middle any more.

We could use more mid-tier / AA projects instead of the extremes of the low and high spectrum.

With a modest budget Iga can still make an amazing game and not be a financial risk. Of course the Kickstarter helps naturally, but I'm speaking more so from the perspective of publishers thinking every game nowadays needing a AAA money maker that sells gangbusters.

It shouldn't need to be this way. At least we will get an awesome Igavania platformer with a large Castle to explore out of this.

Does anybody else cringe every time you hear someone demanding, or in this case even telling IGA directly on Reddit, to make Bloodstained's main campaign a multiplayer one?

I don't know about you but the reason I'm backing this so hard is because I want to play the very first Igavania on a home console in 18 years. That's means a, mostly, single player experience.

Sure an optional local/online co-op is fine and all but I shat bricks when someone asked IGA if Bloodstained could be played similarly to Harmony of Despair (the multiplayer release on PSN and XBLA) which I hated.

I need Bloodstained to be able to be enjoyed by myself at my own rhythm. It can have its co-op or multiplayer modes for all I care but stop demanding stuff that an Igavania game it does not make. Bloodstained you never be anything close to what HoD was. Never.

Also: cool, $3,000,000 already! Hopefully it won't take them a day to update the KS page.

I kind of don't agree with that. One of the things I liked about how they did the campaign was how they focused on the certain style of Castlevania games that IGA is known for working on.

IGA did have some experience putting out Classic style titles, but that's not really what he spent most of his time on so they focused heavily on the titles he's mainly known for rather than the series as a whole. I think this is a more honest way for dealing with it and thankfully it worked.

Yeah, that'd be the definitive version <3
Even better if they did a more traditional platformvania. Bloodstained X: Ritual of Blood.

They could even backport something like that to consoles & PC. I don't know why inti doesn't port Mighty Gunvolt to everything too actually.

I'd prefer the game have a fully realized one player mode. If they we able to put a well done multiplayer mode in that would fit the game well, I'd have no issue with it.

Exactly. IGA isn't even close at finishing his first game as an independent and his first console Igavania in almost 20 years and people are already demanding crazy shit like co-op and intricate multiplayer experiences and asking if it'll have a HoD-like mode.

Bloodstained is inspired in SotN and the majority of us are backing because of that reason. Let him make the absolute best single player experience he can create. Then let him work on an extra multiplayer mode of some sort.

Bloodstained is already getting a 6 stage Classicvania mode in the game complete with 8bit music and zero RPG elements.

Ironically he's known for producing one of the best Classicvania games in years. Castlevania The Adventure: Rebirth.

If the Classic mode is at all comparable to that gem the game will be fantastic for both the Igavania and Classicvania styles.

Friends and fans of Castlevania: how is Castlevania X Chronicles PS1?

It's available on PSN, and transfers to Vita, but there is sparse reading material on the game itself. Is the game any good? Is it the definitive version of anything? Does anybody play this title?

It's been a long time and people want a lot from the guy. Also Harmony of Despair was the last non-reboot CV game and it was the only one on consoles in almost a decade. It's possible them liking that game is the reason they want it.

I honestly wouldn't mind a multiplayer focused CV game (Would have really liked if they had gotten to that Multiplayer 1999 based game) but this one seems like it's best suited for one player with the setting and such.

Well people seem to credit M2 with CV Rebirth. I'm not sure how much of a hand IGA actually had with it. Great game though, honestly I'm not expecting the classic mode to be on that level, partially because it's not the focus, but also because that sets the bar rather high.

It won't play like Bloodstained, the closest thing Castlevania Chronicles recent to compare it with is Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth.

Castlevania Chronicles is a PSOne re-release of the 1994 Sharp X68000 remake of the original Castlevania 1.

Being an excellent remake of the first game in the series is a good starting point. Also if you are going to buy PSOne Classics, grab Symphony of the Night if you don't own it.

That way you'll get one of the best versions of Classicvania (Chronicles) and Igavania (SOTN)

If you own a Wii U, picking up Adventure Rebirth is another excellent buy too.

It's an excellent title. It's pretty under-sung as it was originally on the Sharp x68000 and never came out outside Japan until it got a limited release on the PS1. I personally feel it's one of the best classic style Castlevanias

Also for what it's worth, unless I am mistaken it is the first game that Dracula does his now iconic wineglass toss before the final battle.

EDIT: And Alucard's trotting animation was.... FABULOUS.

Dunno man, certainly a detailed animation and they had to work with very few pixels of resolution, but his arms always looked like he was playing the drums.

He's just drumming along to the beats of the music. It's only natural.

Thanks friends. It wouldn't be my first Castlevania, I've played SotN as a PS1 Classic and Dracula X Chronicles/Rondo of Blood. It's just another Castlevania game available on Vita, which means on some level I already want to play it.

But nobody ever talks about it and it never gets any fanfare. So I was hesitant.

VIIIIIIIITAAAAAA!!!!

We at Armature thank you so much for funding the Wii U version of Bloodstained. Now we have one more surprise for you… if Bloodstained makes it to $3.5mm, we will also be providing a Playstation Vita version of the game.

That’s right, the ultimate -vania game is going to make it back to a handheld platform. And don’t worry, this won’t mean a diminished experience on the Wii U – in fact, with both platforms having touch screens, it’ll probably mean more for both. We’ll also be working with the development team on the PS4 version to see what we can do to make both platforms complement each other.

We are especially grateful to be able to help out on this, as most of Armature’s games have been released on the PS Vita—that would be Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, Injustice, and The Unfinished Swan, in case you’re counting. Our team knows the PS Vita platform inside and out, and we’ll do it justice as we bring you Bloodstained, running on UE4, to the PS Vita. Help us bring Bloodstained where -vania games belong – your hands!

*sobbing*

IGA, you magnificent son of a bitch...!!

This would be dumb considering IGA isn't working on those. The burden will fall on Armature to make it work.

Well, that didn't stop people for whining for pages about the Wii U version holding the other versions back. I expect the same people to have a problem with the Vita version, now, considering that the Vita is weaker. It follows logically, right? It couldn't have possibly been about system wars, I'm sure.

Oh man. Can't wait for people to bitch how Vita version will make the console versions worse :D

Well they have a Wii U port it's possible to be down-scaled pretty well provided the right people handle it. (Which I assume would be Armature again.)
We don't know of the game's ambitions and how Armature would deal with more technically demanding areas though so I can't say anything for performance.
