Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Really hope that Vita stretch goal is met. Said it when I first saw the kickstarter popped up, this is something I'll pretty much only play on a handheld.

Well, that didn't stop people for whining for pages about the Wii U version holding the other versions back. I expect the same people to have a problem with the Vita version, now, considering that the Vita is weaker. It follows logically, right? It couldn't have possibly been about system wars, I'm sure.

Daaammmmnnnn.

Glad Wii U version is confirmed, at any rate. I was gonna get PC version but now I might get that one just to show it support.

I don't know how much of an audience they're going to get on the Wii U and Vita in 2017, and that's assuming there aren't going to be any delays and those versions are going to launch at the same time as PS4/Xbone.

You folks have too many rules.

Two wantful gamer look at sky. One say "Comrade, look at cloud. Cloud is look like Wii U." Another say "and look there, brother, cloud is look like PS Vita."

Yet, is same cloud.

Is it the cloud from the Final Fantasy VII complete HD remake?

I think you're misinterpreting. UE4 isn't supported by Epic on either platform, but you probably can take a hacksaw to it and chop it down to something that'll compile on either one. I am 99.9% confident Armature will build one port codebase that targets both systems and then just bolt any platform-specific extras on top.

Ouya ported the engine to Ouya based on the mobile pipeline, so I imagine that's the concept here: https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/ouya-and-unreal-engine

Epic built in a ton of scalability over time when their licenses wanted it (low end PCs and mobile). However, since no one cared about making games for Wii U or Vita, Epic never went through the effort.

Fanart by Yuji Natsume. Seems Shovel Knight left an impression on Inticreates. Would be sweet if this actually got in the actual game but I'm not holding my breath :P
This owns so much.

But they namedropped Guilty Gear Xrd this time! Surely this will be different! It will look amazing! Stop being so negative!
Seriously though even in a worst case scenario (fully 3D and blatantly so) I think it will come out ahead because then it'd probably be more akin to something like Trine visually. Art style should be a better match for traditional 3D anyway.

Well... a Vita port. And I thought the Wii U was a terrible idea. Damn.

Iga and his team aren't developing the Wii U and Vita versions, they are being outsourced entirely to Armature.

Iga even said he wouldn't let the Wii U port compromise the PS4, XB1, and PC versions of the game, and since Armature is handling the Vita version as well, the scope of the main development platform likely has not changed, with Iga and his staff handling the main version and Armature handling the other versions..

To quote verbatim ~ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iga/bloodstained-ritual-of-the-night/posts/1243827

With that in mind, a lot of you have asked about ports—not just because you want them, but because you want to make sure that making them won't affect IGA's vision for the game. We have good news, and really good news.

The good news is, it won't: IGA and Inti Creates are going to continue developing the game as before, without compromise.

The really good news is how they're going to ensure it won't: At our next stretch goal Armature Studio will join the fray to handle the Wii U version.

I don't know what else to say or what could be done to appease you.

Huh? People still don't know jack shit about jack.
Well it's good that those who would rescind their backing if a Wii U port happened was replaced by those that would only back if a Wii U port happened. Wonder how many will rescind/back now that a Vita port may happen.

OT: how's armature's work? Never actually played any of their ports. Own the MGS:HD port but haven't gotten around to it.

Since the porting should take a while, native UE4 support could be made to WiiU and Vita.

It is a very efficient engine however that allows certain degrees of freedoms and flexibility rather for example developing a new engine entirely from scratch from the ground up.

The game being on Unreal 4 doesn't mean anything in regards from a graphical perspective. It is merely an engine to work as a foundation to develop the game.

You could make a game as simple as Pac-Man or Tetris and STILL run on Unreal 4.

These are Mark Rein's own words - "If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a "true" next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile.

Last paragraph from this article - http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/29/mark-rein-interview-gdc-2013/

It's not a matter of technical impossibility, it's simply a matter of not being officially supported.

Some COULD get Unreal 4 running on the Wii U or Vita, the thing is if there are development issues, Epic isn't going to extend the olive branch to provide technical help or support in that capacity. Armature are entirely on their own with this endeavour.

They... did?

Get jumping.

Oh, I just read the tiers on the side bar and thought they still hadn't added that as the text still said "A digital copy of the game for XBOX ONE, PS4, or STEAM (PC/Mac/Linux)."

I guess I'll back the game later this week, most likely alongside the Humble Nindie Bundle. While I could just get it for Steam, I'd much rather play it on console unless it gets nerfed too badly or something.

i thought shitposting was illegal or something on GAF
also why would you limit yourself to just a handheld if you can play it on a bigger screen?

Some people are accustomed to playing Igavania on handhelds. There's that portability factor, I suppose.

I own a gaming capable PC, a Wii U, a PS TV, and a PS4, so I have multiple options to pick from, although I'm probably going to pick this up on the PS4 because of all of my game libraries my PS4 is the smallest so I want to pad it, of course by the time this game comes out, I'll probably have several PS4 titles by then, such as Disgaea 5, DQ Heroes, Persona 5, and whatever else.

So I'll keep my options open.

Yup, sounds like I've got nothing to be worried about then.

Hopefully if they make it to the PS Vita stretch goal they will be able to implement Wii U functionality to the PS4 by using the Vita as the controller.

Doesn't Class of Heroes 2g for the PS3 do something special when it's connected to a Vita via remote play? Like character management and maps and stuff.

I wonder if something similar could be done between the PS4 and Vita version of Bloodstained.

This is what I'm talking about by the way - http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/13/class-of-heroes-2g-gets-ps3-vita-dual-screen-play-in-the-us/

Reading more about Armature, they're not M2 or Hexadrive but they've won me over. Bring all the ports! Also, please be an orchestral score for the next stretch goal, I would up my pledge to ~$150.

On the subject of Orchestral soundtrack, did SOTN have one, or Lament of Innocence. If the Bloodstained can have that level of quality Orchestra or no, I will be extremely pleased.

Those two games had my favorite soundtracks of the Igavania games.

That would be really cool, but my understanding is that the Gamepad functionality works and is viable because there is virtually no latency. Indeed, depending on your TV, your Gamepad may be displaying images faster.

Super happy about the Vita port, since it means I can actually play the game, as I don't own any of the consoles the game is currently going to be on, nor a PC that could handle a UE4 game. Hope it hits the stretch goal.

i know thats why i have an Asus
but i am absolutely gonna play Witcher 3 on my TV though
this game as well probably

Asus? Sorry you lost me f(0_o)

type of gaming laptop(some of the best)
hook it up to my big ass HDTV to play my Steam games

Got it :)

Since we know literaly nothing on how the game will run I still wouldn't sell the UE4 short. It can scale pretty well. Not toaster level but good enough for older PCs

I'm not sure what version I want since the game is so far off, but it's good that it's reaching a wider audience.

Thanks friends. It wouldn't be my first Castlevania, I've played SotN as a PS1 Classic and Dracula X Chronicles/Rondo of Blood. It's just another Castlevania game available on Vita, which means on some level I already want to play it.

But nobody ever talks about it and it never gets any fanfare. So I was hesitant.

Yeah, the game is possibly the most obscure entry in the entire series. Even as a huge fan and occasional import gamer back at the time I didn't even know the game existed until the PS version came out.

To give it more context as I mentioned before it was only released in limited quantities outside Japan and it came out after SoTN so it was not really a good market for a 2D game of that sort, especially considering it was a 16 bit era game. It was the last 2D CV game on a non-handheld until downloadable games became a thing and HoD came out. I personally think the PS3 release has given it the most exposure it's ever had.

Regardless it's excellent and I hope you enjoy it.

Oh man. Can't wait for people to bitch how Vita version will make the console versions worse :D

I am hoping some of the WiiU people take this stance too for Irony's sake.

With Armature saying they are going to get UE4 on Vita, I think that pretty much guarantees that is their objective for Wii U as well.

Not that it isn't possible; Epic just doesn't maintain their own port.

I think this would be for the best. It would also solve a lot of concerns people have about the platform additions compromising the original versions.

B-but Andrew House said Vita is a "legacy platform" now! What on Dracula's green Earth is going on!! Vita means Unlife!

He said it's a legacy platform outside if Japanese and Asian markets. This is a Japanese game and even if it wasn't it's not all that uncommon for a dead platform to still get a game here and there for a while.

The last game released on the Saturn came out at the end of 1998, I doubt most reasonable people would argue the platform had been dead long before that.

I agree. There will, realistically, be some concessions. But overall, I believe it will be the best possible Vita version of the game. Optimization sometimes means downgrading, and with checked expectations I am sure I will be thrilled with however Bloodstained appears on Vita.

Upped my pledge to two copies of the game.

I didn't realize it was possible to do this. I was considering asking them to allow it. Do you pledge multiple tiers or something?

That's about what people should have been expecting from the very start. It's the same developer!

People were complaining about that from the start. Also while I was aware Capcom was the publisher of Castlevania I didn't realize Igarashi and Inafune were the same person.

In all seriousness they are going for different visual styles and someone completely different is calling the shots. I don't think having different expectations is unrealistic.

Isn't it rather depressing that Armature has had such a bad run at getting projects of their own that even in the land of Kickstarter, where dreams are made into reality, they are relegated to being codemonkeys who are porting a game to platforms the main developer doesn't care to work on? From the Metroid Prime series to this... :(

In the current economy people are lucky to have work. Considering how many devs have straight up gone under it's nice they've been able to keep thier doors open. Hopefully they'll be able to get something if thier own going soon though.

You guys think this could reach 4 million?

I'm fully expecting it.

The $125 tier gives you a physical and a digital copy of Bloodstained, which you can mix and match. Effectively making two copies of the game: one physical, one digital.

Gotcha. I'm actually higher than that tier but I want to get multiple physical copies. I guess I'll try asking about them about it, with all the current platforms I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat, and I'm sure that will help it fund at least somewhat higher as well.

It absolutely seems like something they will add if you inquire. I know, especially with the Vita and Wii U goals now, more people will be interested in multiple physical copies.
