Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I'll definitely upgrade my laptop (it's currently on Windows 8.1)

I'll probably keep Windows 7 on my desktop
 
I just got the free download notification.

Should I download Windows 10 or stay on Windows 7?

Getting a new OS at launch sounds like trouble.
 
It will be tempting to upgrade right away but I'll probably wait for a while to see how compatible older programs are.

I haven't had any problems on the preview builds. Honestly, aside from Vista and how shitty Metro was, MS has been on a good roll with their OS updates.

I found that moving from 7 to 8.1 was a big performance increase on my core2duo, win8 loads up super fast and feels more nimble then my old copy of win7 ever did.

hopefully 10 is just as big of an improvement under the hood.
 
will there be a free Win 10 install DVD ISO for us? what happens when we want to get a clean install in 2-3 years and lets say lose our win7/win8 install disc to get windows on our pc in the first place so we can install this Win10 3GB download.

Control Panel > Notification Area Icons > GWX > Hide icon (or only show notifications) and it goes away.

Design complaints aside, Windows 8 was smooth on the first day. Everything I've seen from Windows 10 indicates that same level of stability.

That said, I'm not a fan of in-place upgrades and always do a fresh install.
 
I'm glad this topic is up because I have a question that has been gnawing at me. Please do not mock the question because I'm a total n00b about this stuff, heh. What happens to my precious Steam and GoG games? Most of everything I own from those runs great here in Windows 7 64-bit but there's always blurbs on the pages of some games that state it can't run/won't run well in Windows 8. If I upgrade to Windows 10 will I (and others) be looking at a lot of issues with our legacy Steam and GoG collections? What are your thoughts? I also apologize if this has been covered a dozen times already.

How many games like these do you know?

I know Fallout 3, but that one says Windows 7. There are very few games that would work on Windows 7 and not on Windows 8, if any.

W10 TP still have many more advanced settings in Explorer windows. Since the new settings runs in a window and has far more settings on it it doesn't feel as jarring, but the different visuals are something I hope MS addresses in the future, either by migrating more settings to the settings app or by finding a way to change the layout of the old settings wholesale so they match.
 
QUESTION!

I'm currently running two PCs on windows 7. One is my recording PC (Which is not connected to the internet) and the other one is my gaming PC.

I'll probably upgrade to 10 on the gaming PC since I just got the prompt today, but I'm not sure if I should for the music recording pc because my software may or may not be compatible. Is there any way I can reserve an upgrade on that PC and then keep it around till I'm ready to switch?
 
Whats going to happen to the Surface RT devices? I have a Surface 2, and im hoping we are getting something as well.

I don't know any for a fact; I'm just saying there are always comments in the review sections or in the community pages for games with, "won't run in Windows 8." Now obviously whether this is directly related to the person's OS or not, well, I have my doubts but the fact remains there are always complaints. I don't own any devices with Windows 8 nor do I use any at work so I'm not familiar at all with the OS, and this is why I'm a little concerned about going from 7 to 10.

The only application I've ever had trouble with in Windows 8 that I perhaps wouldn't have trouble with in Windows 7 would be the Tomb Raider Level Editor. Now that is the level editor for the original Tomb Raider. It had an unofficial patch to make it work on Vista.

Have never had any compatibility issues otherwise, I'm sure there can be a couple of games but there are usually workarounds for those issues. I doubt Windows 10 is going to be any worse with compatibility issues than the previous versions.

I'd love links to pages with people having problems though, it is completely possible.

Man, I'll have to make sure I"m updated so I can get that icon and make this happen. I'm really hoping though that we get a way to clean install W10 instead of just laying it on top of my 8.1 install. I'm sure my 8.1 is bloated as fuck and it'll be nice to start fresh.
 
Does anyone know if you'll be able to update if you're running Windows 10 technical preview? I have a windows 8.1 key, but since you can't downgrade I would need to do a fresh install down to 8 only to upgrade to 10.

Hiding the icon doesn't kill the process. You need to uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 to actually remove it. You can kill the gwx.exe process every time you restart as well if you prefer. Pretty shitty of them not to let you remove it in a normal fashion.

Not sure when the cut off date is, but I bought a cheapo copy of Win7 specifically for this Win10 upgrade. I assume a genuine key for Win7 is cheaper than buying Win10 standalone new.

I want to know more about the OS, I registered for the upgrade, but any software at launch has bugs and stuff.
 
I have been waiting for Microsoft to define a date. Now I just need confirmation for a clean install process.

On that matter, does a program exists that encloses just an instance of a program within a VM and without booting the full Windows desktop? I think Parallels in OS X does that, but I don't know any for Windows as I have only used VMWare in the past.
 
Got the icon and reserved it. I really have no problems with 8.1 though so I will wait a few weeks until after release before I install it as I want to make sure the upgrade process is trouble-free.
 
Looking forward to it. I picked up a Surface 3 a couple of days ago and I'm loving it so far, easily one of the best devices I've ever used.

I use ClassicShell on my desktop/gaming PC, so I had been dreading having to use Metro 8.1 on my Surface, but I gave it a shot and I kind of love it. It's perfect for a tablet, and I'm hoping that Windows 10 is enough of a compromise that it's fantastic in both desktop and tablet forms.
