Stella has been removed from FFXV; Itamuro writing game; Demo 2 June 9; FFXV not @ E3

Damn, this made me both chuckle and sad at the same time. To think we really are just hoping for a good FF game at this point. Gaf's younger, Squaresoft-spoiled selves would never believe this.

Can anyone explain what happened to SE in a nutshell? In terms of the quality of their storytelling I mean.

Was it always embarrassing teenaged hamfistery and we just didn't mind back then or has it genuinely gotten worse since the golden era?

The only FF games I've played are 5 and 10. The former really felt awesome and the latter was interesting but the ham levels were through the fkin roof.

Sure, but... we never even knew what the old character's personality was =P Are people really upset about this? It's not like they're changing a character from an established and released game or story. Chances are it was a change for an improvement. Some people are acting like this is bad news?

She looked like a strong, confident character (that was going to fight against noctis in the older trailers) while the new Luna is that cute, shy and innocent girl.
Due these personality changes, the fight between Noctis and Stella probalby won't happen anymore and Luna will be the tpyical waifu !
People are also scared, that the Romeo & Juliets theme is gone.

Since im not seeing FF Versus in this game anymore, i actualy don't care. But i think thats the main conern of the others

I think people liked how Stella seemed to be Noctis' rival or counterpoint. We've only seen Luna sitting in a chair looking worried, so hopefully she becomes more interesting the more we see of her.

You say worried, I say determined.

And that's not the only time we've seen her, BTW. Her second appearance is far from "worried".

It kinda varies. Vagrant Story is one of the best written games of all time, imo, with dialogue that borders on poetry. In the same year they also released FF8 which some gamers consider "teenaged hamfistery", as you put it. But then FF9 and FF12 were also fantastic examples of great stories and dialogue, while FFX was here and there and FFXIII was... well there are enough opinions on that already =P

Thanks for the explanation - I haven't followed this game too closely (feels waaaay too soon to get myself hyped). Hopefully most people will wait for the game to be released before judging too harshly and strongly. All we've had to go on are ambiguous trailers, so we're not sure yet what we're gaining and what we're losing. Just that something changed. I guess we'll never know what we really lost, so let's just hope they make Luna interesting =)

Almost definitely gone :(

Nomura should have been allowed to make the game he wanted. This is all very sad. I'm very concerned it's going to be a mediocre game in the end 😔😔

The game Nomura wanted might never have come out at all. Or it might have been mediocre (see, e.g., the first couple of Kingdom Hearts games). Letting Nomura do what he wanted -- albeit with a limited staff -- was likely part of the problem here. SE would have done better to tighten the leash and set clear benchmarks early in development.

Then that's still a failure with the translation team. Look at what Square did with Vagrant Story and FFXII's translations. Those are examples of how to get it right. FFXIII is an example of how to... not do quite as well.

The localization of the FF13 throughout the board was subpar. "We wanted the names to sound less fantasy and more sci fi..."... Ugh.

I hope whoever is localizing it this time does a better job.

I honestly felt the XIII localization improved things a bit, especially with regards to Snow's dialog. Japanese fans hate XIII's script as well

So... these are two different characters? Looks like she just tied her hair up...

Why yes, they are two different characters.

Where else did we see her? I haven't watched the trailers in a while.

FF9 and FF12 were also fantastic examples of great stories and dialogue, while FFX was here and there

I think it's important to distinguish between dialogue and story/plot. FFXII had masterful dialogue, but it was very flawed plot-wise. On the other hand, FFX had some cheesy lines, but it had the better, more realized story.

I love both games for different reasons.

The fans were at the gates with torches lit. Demanding something, anything. Demo staved them off for a while. All speculation of course.

That's kind of dramatic. The demo staved the fans off from what exactly? SE doesn't owe anyone a demo.

From memory, the demo was not mean to be released the way it did and was rushed...

And he is not wrong, is clear that the demos was a way to try to calm the fanbase and "show" that work was being done to the game and that it was going to release soon.

I think the demo accomplished the goal of showing that work is being done. What I don't understand is why he called it a smokescreen. Some people are acting like there is some huge conspiracy with all this... I think that some have built up this fantasized version of FFXV/FFvXIII in their heads that the juxtaposition with a real, shippable FFXV with warts and all is too much to handle. I admit I have too but I am still optimistic about the game. I enjoyed the demo for what it was.

So, am I missing something, because I don't see any mention of FFXV not being at E3 in the OP? Or was this added later?

Yep, I'd agree with that. Vaan was certainly a problem, and his inclusion messed with the plot a bit. Balthier, Basch, Gabranth, and Ashe though... damn that was a good story going on. The antagonist was also a little... mundane, and there weren't many twists. The dialogue was almost always exceptional though.

I think so long as they elevate the majority of the plot to something mature and well-written, then teenage elements (like Vaan and Tidus) become far easier to accept. They still released plenty of games where those elements were practically non-existent though (FF9 and Vagrant Story being great examples).

Can't believe such a big deal is being made out of this. Luna looks almost the same as Stella and we hardly knew anything about her. Geez.

You are not alone. KH1 had great level design (even though some levels feel small now)
I'm pretty sure later KH games became more linear in level design because people complained about how KH1 was with that...

That being said, I'm either misremembering (despite having just watched the ATR =P) or FFXV has the same level designer from KH, so maybe there's hope there for XV.

Must of the changes comes from the fact that they wanted to do sequels. If they would've kept Nomura and allowed him to do two or three sequels, do you think the story would've made sense?

Dammmmn I haven't seen this trailer in so long. I wanna play that!

So it wasn't just me! I always felt the levels in KH2 were lacking something that 1 had and I just never found the game as enjoyable as the first due to it. Glad to know it wasn't just me that thought the level design in 2 got much worse.

Yeah after almost 10 years of development they want to cut corners and just get this game out the door.

Kagari should keep his avatar for old time's sake.

I don't think I'm disappointed... But the right of Stella bring an antagonist, albeit probably not for the whole game, that brief state down scene showing she had eye powers also seemed really interesting. Hopefully Luna maintains a unique and interesting vibe and doesn't become a regular ol hopeless/desperate chick trope.

I liked the old battle UI in the older trailers too with the parties faces showing their real time expressions in battle. Regardless I'm ok with how it is now so far. Sucks that Nomura didn't get to compete his project with this but KH is his masterpiece so hopefully he's headlong in making that a superb showing.

Oh yeah, he said that... maybe he meant smokescreen in the sense to hide the fact that the game we are going to receive is not the same game that was in hiatus/development/Nomuras head after all this time =P

It's normal tho, this game has building expectations for such a long time that I honestly think that it's not going to deliver on them or at least meet most of the crazy ideas people have in their heads.

I want to be wrong tho, I'm still anticipating this one =3

Kagari should keep his avatar for old time's sake.

But most of the time it was a skeleton crew of like 4 people working on the game, until 2012 when Tabata came in a reboot the project.

The feedback was nothing but a smokescreen to make it seem like they actually hearing fans out when in reality all these changes have been planned internally.
This. I'm so tired of hearing about it and can't believe they're continuing with it as to post it on a website of all things. It makes them look incompetent now, like they can't make a game.

I don't want to see anymore tech demos either. No more Duscae either. Tabata is just stringing fans along.

do you know the reasons why Nomura got replaced Kagari?

The removal of the party scene makes sense given what we know of the current storyline. I was debating with some other fans what the current sequence of story events were (namely, where is Nocits when Insomnia gets invaded), and the party scene just didn't fit the current timeline at all.

I dunno... I agree with the tech demo stuff. But as for the feeback and updates, it moreso feels like they're trying to continue tangibility to keep the game's presence here. After so many years of being in dev hell, it's nice that Tabata and crew are being more proactive with fans.

You mean the character that hasn't been shown since the game was called Versus 13? I am confused why people are mad about that, we know little about that character as well.

"But she is so pretty!"

...okay.

Don't mean to sound dismissive, but why were people so invested in a character from a game that didn't even exist yet in the first place? Just character design?

I, too, am greatly sadden by a very pretty virtual character with whom we have zero reason to care for given that she's about as developed as a brown paper bag has been unnecessarily removed from a game that has been in some sort of development limbo since about 7 final fantasy releases ago.

Pretty much my thoughts. Certain fans were fantasizing about a character we only saw briefly a few times in trailers and writing fiction in their heads about her.
