I was looking for something on the tube a few days ago and came across this movie and decided to watch it. Movie is pretty awesome actually, I loved the way its put together and filmed. Would watch again.

Laugh all you want. I'm convinced that there hasn't been a major studio release as visually inventive and unconvential as Speed Racer since the Wizard of Oz. It's like some one else said, if this movie were in the hands of any other director, it would have looked like The Fast & The Furious Tokyo Drift.

Totally agree, seeing this in IMAX was the best movie going experience of my life, bar none.

If you take it for what it is, it's perfect...from the casting to the story, it IS Speed Racer. If you try to look for something deeper, you'll have to dig elsewhere.

After seeing the Martyrs thread (which people just refuse to let it die!!!), this movie is godlike. But in reality it's not awesome, just enjoyable.

I watched it because it was made by THE brothers and it really looked nice with some original design ideas and that's what it became, a nice movie with an awesome design!

Trixie: Oh my god, was that a ninja?
Pops Racer: More like a "non"-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days.

Pops kicking ninja ass rocked. This movie is full of awesomeness. The race sequence in the desert had me losing my mind in the theater.

What the hell. The casting was perfect. The only misstep was Matthew Fox. They should've gotten someone cooler for Racer X.
Matthew Fox is one cold blooded mother fucker, he worked well as Racer X.

I'm gonna have to start up a Matthew Fox defense force soon.

90% of you guys in the Lost thread ALREADY ARE the Matthew Fox Defense Force :lol Fox's crappy acting actually worked out wonderously in Speed Racer, however.

The only casting choice I didn't care much for was Trixie.

Now, I think Christina Ricci is a very attractive woman, but I don't think she quite looked the part.

Then again, I don't know of any Hollywood actress who does. Trixie was a cutie.

Cartoons can have believable and/or interesting characters, even the most childish ones. That's not a good excuse.

I thought it did. I mean, out of this crazy, candy-coated experience the writing (and perhaps more importantly the actors) managed to pull one of the most endearing and legitimate family dynamics I've seen in film.

also, it didn't even look that good in the first place, it's just like, a bunch of fucking colors.

Actually, there are a lot of really innovative film techniques used in the movie. It's not just the cars or colors or whatever. The way many scenes are constructed are markedly different from any other movie out there. I'm convinced that if Speed Racer had ever become as popular as The Matrix did, you'd see these techniques mimicked just as often as Bullet Time has been.

I saw this for the first time on Cinemax a few weeks ago and once I get a Blu Ray player, this and The Dark Knight will be the first movies I'll buy.

In my opinion the plot was well-built in parts, notably the family dynamics. One scene that stands out: Speed and Pops are quarreling at the hotel and the argument is steadily escalating. Mom jumps in between them and averts a crisis. That moment and a few others like it were recognizable and honest to life and benefit from strong acting and capable (but typical) character development up to that point.

This isn't exceptional drama of course. It is offering more as a story vehicle in comparison to other "kiddie" films or whatever category you're most likely to slot Speed Racer into. In stead of responding merely to outside threats or opportunities in the way many popcorn flick tales do this story has internal tensions, some of them recognizable to many people with fathers or sons or brothers.

I absolutely LOVED this film. Easily the best adaption of a children's cartoon into a live action movie. The visuals were incredible eye candy. I love how sweet and earnest the Racer family was compared to the rest of the racing world. The desert race is by far my favorite scene.

If you don't like this movie, you're likely some jaded dick who likes torture porn movies while listening to Death Metal.:lol

Also, I recently rented the Speed Racer video Game on DS having previously owned it on Wii. I think it was Phill on Player One Podcast who heaped praise on it. He was right!! It's easily the best racer on DS. It has a great soundtrack, and the tracks and environments are actually a slight improvement over the Wii version. The best way to describe it is F-Zero on a rollercoaster. The only thing I didn't like was the car-fu mini game while you're in the middle of racing. It is optional, (you have to press B to start it) but it's the weakest part of the game.

I'm going to look to buy it now.

Is it just me, or did Spritle remind you of a miniature Joe Peschi? He had jowels. What kid has jowels?

It's merely okay. Deeply flawed.

But the elite-nerds need their cult films that only THEY "truly get," so don't read too much into the praise.

Well, that takes care of Sapiens. All we need now is the traditional Amirox post, and this thread is a wrap :lol

I was blown away by Speed Racer. While I wasn't overly fond of how some of the race sequences looked, I thought the overall pacing of the movie was downright brilliant. The film was great at building excitement.

Hey Speed Racer fans, Solo, I finally tracked down a copy of the Target exclusive Wonderful World of Racing DVD that snuck out before the release of Speed Racer in theaters:

If you want more Speed Racer, find a copy of this!

It's a mock Racer family documentary featuring the cast in character; and a number of the other drivers like Prince Kabala, the driver of Grey Ghost, etc.

It's quite awesome; and I'd like to know why in the fuck this was not included in the mass market DVD / BRD releases?!

This is the same DVD that's in the Target Exclusive DVD:

Unlike the Target set, you can find this DVD for less than $20, while I've only found the full set for around $80. :(

I just saw this movie and count me as another that liked the movie. The movie is very energetic and fun.

The parts with that gang give anyone else Dick Tracy vibes?

I'm seriously considering buying a Blu-Ray player just for this movie, and I've watched the damn thing 5 times already.

Last race was, from beginning to ending, PERFECTLY executed. I have a ton of bones to pick with the rest of the movie, but by god that last race didn't miss a step, and totally redeemed the rest of the film. I could barely believe that the Wachowski's pulled off an ending that awesome.

yup

The movie was perfect.
I stayed away because of all the hate, especially from GAF.
Saw it on DVD.

What the fuck are people complaining about?
It's Speed Racer. It's perfectly done. If you don't like it, you don't like Speed Racer, or you just have some super thick nostalgia glasses on.

Story doesn't make sense? It's Speed Racer.
Characters are lame? It's Speed Racer.
Too cartoony? It's Speed Racer.
Too much camp? It's Speed fucking Racer.

When did this hit BluRay? I might actually pick it up. It is indeed fuck awesome.

just caught this on sky, really enjoyed it. i appreciated that the wachowski's just went balls out with absolutely everything.

Same here. Didn't really catch the reactions on gaf when it was out so going be general reception I didn't expect much. i missed about 10-15 mins at the beginning, but it was easy enough to get into and it was just so much fun. Mind you, everyone else in the house thought it was rather silly and walked off. And it was silly in the saturday morning cartoon sort of way, but I liked the fact that for a couple of hours I didn't care and obviously the filmmakers didn't either. (warner bros was crazy to give them money for this though)

A year or so after first seeing it...I still remember every part of the "reboot" sequence.
It's honestly one of the few scenes that have stuck with me so well.

"Reboot" is my favorite musical cue in a movie this decade. That scene is just brilliant. I love the zoetrope effect.

Was awesome, but I think a good portion of GAF went at the movie with a serious viewpoint, the hole thing was an over the top parody.

Just look at the beginning when Rex got rid of the bomb by braking a broom stick and using speed's go cart to get distance, instead of throwing the thing.

Best anime adapatation is ever going to be made by Hollywood. Simply perfect, the wachowskies undestanded perfectly the source material because they loved the series as kids. The use of flashbacks and flashforwards like real anime in a small frame of time is just amazing.
And all those fucking tributes to F-Zero by the designers, holy damn! First I thought it was just a big coincidence until i saw one of the making offs where a designer commented that.
The closest thing we are going to have to an F-Zero movie ever.

And Michael Giacchino, fucking Michael Giacchinno. That man is fucking incredible, its my favourite composer but the Speed Racer score was just out of this world.

The last race is one of the most incredible ending scenes I have ever seen i a movie, give me goosebumps every time i see it.

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this movie. I never do it, but I saw the incredibly harsh reviews and decided to wait for the DVD.

Got the Blu-Ray and had a blast with it. Surprise of last year for me.

This is one of my most memorable movie going experiences. I remember standing up during the last race with my mouth open without even realizing it, one of my friends had to tell me to sit down

rewatched the last race today on my iphone when i was bored, and i stand by my opinion that this movie is a visual masterpiece. it is just so mind blowingly awesome that it is one of my biggest regrets that i didnt see it in IMAX.

the montage at the second half of the race after he jump starts the car is so beautiful and perfect

speed: why dont u tell me why i should be racing
rex: i dont know. i just hope that when you find out, im there watching
*cut to rex watching with pride

love it. (probably not the exact phrasing)

Speed Racer is the Wachowski's masterpiece. Everything about it is so deliberately crafted and genuine to the heart of their goal, which was to bring the surreal, frenetic silliness of the cartoon to life. I've never been a fan of the cartoon, but this movie deserves respect for how focused and accomplished it is. It's basically the movie Robert Rodriguez has tried and failed to make four times.

it is such a huge shame that this movie was not widely accepted. makes me sad

Just recently saw Speed Racer. Wonderful film, and easily the Wachowski siblings best effort. The story wasn't very deep, but the true depth of the film lied within how it was shot and edited together. It's going to take another couple viewings to truly appreciate all of the little details. I'll be buying this on Blu-ray soon.
