Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Instead of having us go through four shitty stretch goals to reach the wanted fifth one, why not have all five stretch goals be interesting and constructive to the design of the game to begin with.

Two reasons:

1. Feature creep.
2. Sticking a bunch of design related content into the stretch goals makes the base game look barebones and suggests that the developer doesn't have a strong vision for what the game should be in the first place.

You want to see stretch goals like this, where almost all of them are things they can do in parallel with the core development process by outsourcing the work or assigning additional programmers and artists to build specific tertiary features, as opposed to things that can only be accomplished by making the core team work harder.

What a shitty incentive, a mode that literally creates itself.

Sounds like Rogue Legacy, but without the gimmick.

Shitty for you maybe. There are tons of people who are crazy for roguelikes (myself included in that crowd). Will be raising my pledge a bit to support the cause.

Booo the 5 mil goal. I already dislike procedurally generated stuff, but it is also the exact opposite that I would want from a metroidvania game. I love them for their great maps purposeful exploration, and generated stuff removes the meaning of that.

It would only be one dungeon. I dont see the harm in that. Actually, I would welcome it.

Well, I'm loving the new announcement and even considering raising my pledge to $125 to get a physical PS4 copy with all the extra exclusives and what-have-you.

I sent them a question regarding the beta access, but does anyone know if they've said anything regarding access still being given to people who pick a console physical item and then have the PC as the additional digital copy in the $125 tier?

I had originally only done the $100 tier and wanted to get beta access with pc as my digital game. I emailed them and they said you could absolutely do that.

It's an optional mode. The main mode would still be carefully designed

That's good to know... I had the exact same question myself. -_- Probably in for either $125 or $175, then.

The FAQ says this:

"If I choose a console version, can I still participate in the beta?

No, you must choose Steam or GOG as one of your platforms and back at the $60+ tier. If you wish to add the beta as an add-on purchase, you must add-on any of the $60+ PC versions."

I guess that's outdated now?

Anyway, the thought of procedural dungeons/castle/whatever entered my mind but they seemed so un-Castlevania-like that I kind of just dismissed the thought. Woah.

The $125 and $175 tiers come with two copies of the game: one physical, one digital. You can pick any platform for each version, and both versions come with the premium backer bonuses -- and for the PC releases, the beta is one of the bonuses. (Note this does not apply to $28 add-ons, even if your base pledge is above $60.)

It's not outdated, but it's only considering the add-on system and not the tiers that allow you to get a digital game alongside your physical copy.

So basically, if you go for the $125 or $175 tier, you can select a Windows PC version as your digital copy and still get beta access whereas you wouldn't if you just added a $28 digital copy to your pledge via the addon system.

If we make the $5 million goal there's some things I hope they include:

1. Daily challenge where everyone has the same dungeon layout and competes for the highest score.
2. Seeded runs

It would only be one dungeon. I dont see the harm in that. Actually, I would welcome it.

I kinda do. The worst and only bad part of Bloodborne was the generated content. It was a similar situation there as well where it was an optional part of the game, but since the game and loot and what not wasn't really designed for it, it ended up being tedious and unrewarding.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting the update, but it sounds like that would be kind of useless since it's seemingly tied to your character? :/ In any case I think this would be much better as a kind of challenge mode with a set character instead of focusing on powering up your character with persistent loot.

I am so glad to see the massive funding this is getting.

I do have to say that the stretch goals, which are mostly cool, do not really interest me. I would prefer the focus to be on a singular awesome campaign, and the stretch goals were "The castle gets bigger" instead of a new playable character and such.

But I do realize that new modes and such are what is keeping the contributors excited and involved. But whatever, this is cool.

I do sort of doubt they will get to implementing the majority of these stretch goals. And if they do, the main game will suffer.

I mean one of the goals was 'Igas biggest castle' so that right there tells you the game will be large.

I like to think of it as, the base game will already be incredibly large so why not give more ways to play? I find it kind of better that way. It means that even if we don't hit all of the goals, we'll still get a big game.

Some kickstarters that have goals that add more to the base game really make me feel like I'm missing out on what could have been. Take Shantae: Half Genie Hero for example. I'm totally hyped for that game, but I was so sad that it didn't hit the last bonus chapter goal. I wouldn't be super sad if Bloodstained didn't the Roguelike goal, but I'd be super hyped if it did.

The extra money should mostly be going to polishing the game and increasing the scope, if the stretch goals are planned correctly, so yes, it may in fact increase the size of the castle, and if not, at least it should increase the quality of the base game. They are usually meant to be milestones that bring in more money than they cost, to help increase the funding

^ And this too of course. Well said.

There are so many modes and bonuses in this thing i really hope they can deliver.

3 Characters
Difficulty Modes
New Game +
Online Vs and Coop
Local Coop
Async Online stuff
Big Castle
Bunch of ports
Special Cheat codes
Speed Run Mode
Boss Rush mode.
Retro Levels
Classic Mode
I'm a little worried about that too. It's not that they don't have the money to do it, it's just that all these features/modes require time to develop. I just hope his team will be up to the task.

Thinking maybe the game won't actually come out by March 2017. Though I guess we'll see. They have 21 months to do it.

I'd prefer if they concentrated on delivering the core game first, then add in the extra modes later in a free update, like the Shovel Knight team is doing.

If I'm reading this right...are they really making physical Japanese Wii U and PS4 copies? Pretty sure I am, but just want to double check.

"Will my Physical/Digital Console version be able to play in my region?
Yep! For any of the discs or download codes that require a region, you'll receive a survey sometime after the Kickstarter has ended that you can use to select your console's region."

I asked about that awhile back regarding a Japanese PS4 physical copy and they replied basically saying it was all still to be determined but that the language would indeed be supported.

Personally, I would love the choice to pick a Japanese region copy as my PS4 Kickstarter physical copy.

Have they revealed Miriam's voice actress yet? I hope they don't make her a mute "blank slate". She deserves a personality and a background.

Who'd you like to voice her in English? I'd love another MGS alumni to voice her too so I'll have to say Jennifer Hale for Miriam!

Please no Jennifer Hale, I hear her voice way too much these days and it would be better just to give it a lesser known VA.

I've never played a Castlevania game but oh my god I am getting excited for this game. I backed it last night. I backed the digital PS4 version.

The only Metroidvania I have played is Super Metroid and Strider 2014 (is this a metroidvania?). Will Bloodstained be similar in any regards?

The exploration elements of those and the Igavania games are very similar. I think the main difference you'll notice is the inclusion of rpg elements in Iga's games such as leveling up and a large amount of different weapons/armor.

What the hell is a Roguelike Dungeon?

It's a poor name for it considering what a Roguelike really is versus what we're receiving.

What we're getting is a map that randomizes itself each and every time you enter it. There will be similarities of course due to the system having to create from a set amount of assets, but you shouldn't encounter a room that's the exact same if the system is designed well enough.
