Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain to feature microtransactions

Absolutely. All bark, no bite.

That doesn't mean what Konami is doing isn't some really shitty practice.

I don't want to miss out on an otherwise great game because of some shitty details (like a downgrade or microtransactions) but it still disappoints me greatly.

They´re even the creators of the most famous of them all.

Fuck Konami.

Now putting in this code just brings up the purchase screen.

Never ceases to amaze me how people still give Konami the benefit of the doubt here. "It won't be that bad guys," as if somehow everything we've seen this publisher do over the last several years didn't happen, or was a fluke.
Boggles my mind.

The one game I anticipated most.

FUCK

There is always Persona 5.

And totally coincidentally they also eliminated the whole Grand Theft Auto part of the game in GTAO (you have to buy cars with the game's cash in order to own them) and added rent, insurance, and bills the players get to pay in upkeep.

Funny how that works.
WHAT!? You live more like a citizen then a criminal!? O_o
I never said i wasn't going to buy it. Metal Gear is usually a day one buy for me..but with the falling out of Kojima and Konami (the scariest part of the whole situation to me) and these alleged microtransactions so "close" to release, I'll wait until its already out and already reviewed by some of my trusted sites/outlets before I pick it up
The Day 1 Sticker what did it for me.

Wouldn't be surprised if this may a part of Kojima's conflict with Konami.
My immediate thought.

EDIT: I've had this on pre-order for the longest time. Going to cancel now. Can always order again if previews say it's not an issue.
2nd edit: Was rushed on my lunch hour before, time to check the facts now and I'm going to calm down a bit and wait for more detail. In my first reading I didn't realise that two totally separate sources were being combined in the article. The speeding up and in-game purchases haven't been connected yet.

So... Let me get this straight. We literally have no idea the extent or amount of impact these may have, right?

I'm just confused at all the responses here given the absolute dearth of information.

Its shitty but the fact is nowadays it's almost everyone is doing it and there's not anything we can do about but just keep ignoring it like I've been doing. I'm not missing out on my most anticipated game over something that's purely optional. But hey, if people want to overreact and jump straight to the hyperbolic "preorder canceled" step before we know anything then that's on them.

Yeah true some people go way too far based on how little info we have at the moment.

But I think it's good that people are expressing their discontent with in app purchases at least. Those protests might get ignored but you can't win if you don't even participate.

I highly doubt that this revelation will impact the main game much, they did had this kind of stuff to MGS 4 as part of the MGO portion like character packs. I am pretty sure that this won't be a necessity for the story or however MB is supposed to function

"Welcome to the Internets. This is a Knee Jerk Reaction Flight so please leave all common sense at Check-In. Thank you for flying Internets."

Don't worry guys, Japanese companies are historically very disciplined and conservative with their DLC practices.

*pfft* hahaha, naw, hunker down for a storefront with 15 pages of individually-sold costumes and consumables.

IGN's own Jose Otero also noticed room for what could be microtransactions when he previewed The Phantom Pain last month.

At one point in The Phantom Pain demo, according to Otero, attempting to speed up development on Mother Base resulted in the following prompt: "Reduced time features cannot be used in offline mode."

It affects the single player game, did you guys read the OP?
These practices are shitty and shouldn't be in full priced games.

I don't mind microtransactions in F2P games, but they are unacceptable in full priced retail games. This is nothing more than greed, and I will not support publishers doing this. I'll buy the game used instead of day 1 purchase now.

I actually like this. Given the option to either spend 10$ or farm points for hours on end I think it is pretty obvious which is the better option.

how about wait until it's confirmed first? sounds reasonable to me

You must not buy many games then. Almost every "full priced retail games" have some form of it and it's business as usual because they're redundant and for people that just want everything unlocked quickly.

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Good game design would have it be neither.

"I actually like this". Lord have mercy on our hobby.

The problem is that gamers today ask for 654189161648 hours of campaign and companies just can't make that. So instead we get games like Assassin's Creed 2 and up where they just clutter the map with pointless "side-quests" that do nothing but stop you from enjoying the story of the game or prevent you from having access to all the game's features. I would rather have a 8 hour Order 1886esque Metal Gear like the 1st 3 are rather than a bloated game with pointless fetch quests and money hoarding. In this case I would personally do anything to just get to the good stuff and I don't care if it turns the game from bazzilion hours of farming with a couple of hours of good story into just those couple of hours of good story. So, if the game will have an option to skip all the unnecessary bs then I am totally down to pay an extra buck (of course I would rather not have to pay anything extra but it beats the alternative)

Wut. You're exactly who they're catering to. Intentionally bad design you are willing to pay your way past.

I'm not ready to say that's what this all is yet, but I guess you're good to go if it is. Damn, son.

read my more in-depth post and tell me what you think

It shows what expectations, people have when they expect poor mechanics you'd rather pay to get past than just having devs not make those pointless and boring mechanics in the first place to pay past, but hey, then micro-transactions would never make money.

I'm about to be a father of two now, so I know about time being important. If this does turn out to be a mess, I'm still not willing to pay my way to a quicker outcome. It's the base building stuff from the sounds of it. I can leave the game on, or just quit out of it and come back later if it actually does hinder advancement at some point. I'm there day one no matter what, but I'm not giving more money for shit like that. I'm not in this for the story as much anyway. It's about the gameplay. If it takes me a long time to reach its conclusion, part of that will be because I'm as immersed as I was in GZ.
