The interesting thing of this woman's case is that apparently she's not simply 'being black' at times and then going back to 'being white' when she goes home. She's a teacher of african studies, she married a black man, adopted black kids, works at the naacp, etc. It has completely taken over her identity and life, in a more or less harmless way for everyone involved.

I don't know if it started as a scam or some innocent cultural approach or admiration or whatever, but right now she seems to be completely absorbed and immersed in it.

If she weren't involved with the naacp nobody would care. And her twitter posts are quite ridiculous considering the circumstances, but other than that I don't see much problem with it other than being a completely bizarre situation.

It's like some uncharted territory, I don't even know what to think.

Saw this story on GMA and it's so funny but also very sad and pathetic. Her being involved with NAACP through deception is totally unacceptable.

It takes a special amount of arrogance (and yes privilege) to implore black folks to accept a woman who deliberately deceived our community and exploited a cause for personal gain. She chose to deceive. If she had foregone all of this cloak and dagger nonsense and just been a empathic white woman who fights for disenfranchised folks, that would have been noble all by itself.

Not even our own identities belong to us anymore. Apparently this is up for white people to decide too?

Now we have someone invoking the 1% rule to its most extreme degree. I'm not even mad.

A hairstyle is a hairstyle.

What would make me mad is if she deliberately applied bronzing makeup. That's the only thing that would annoy me about her stance on what it means to be part of an ethnic group. Otherwise it's the same ol' I'm 1/8 Cherokee nonsense we've heard before but now applied to being from Africa. *shrugs*

This is kinda how I feel about it. It sounds to me that it's just as likely that, in her ambiguity about her own race, she's trying to make a greater point about race in general. I mean, I've only read the OP article and watched a bit of one video of her talking, but I haven't seen/heard of her saying "I am a black woman." Not saying that point would be correct, just that might be more her angle than trying to "trick" people into thinking she is a born and raised black woman.

Either way, I think she's got shit twisted and she needs to take a step back, maybe get some help, and clarify to herself, and the people around her, what's going on in her head. That being said, I just don't think I have enough context here to participate in making her the internet meme of the week.

I can tell this girl is white not because of her color of her skin, but because of the amazing defense of her bullshit actions in the same manner people do with murderous cops, #alllivesmatter people and diet racists. She gets the be black and also an army of devil's advocates that have the same superficial understanding of reality as hers.

Seeing as we'll now have trust issues, this will be the new true test of one's race - observing how many devil's advocates appear from behind them.

Can they fill a small clown car? I wanna see a picture of your parents.
Do you need a Tardis to carry them around? You've probably killed at least one black kid.

So many people coming into the thread, 'I don't know how to feel, this is definitely a weird situation, I don't know what to say, BUT...' and then launch into full on devil's advocate and defense mode and have every excuse as to why we should just ignore or gloss over this. Then they'll again end with, but it's a weird situation, I just don't know, don't blame me, I don't know. Why? What are you gaining?

Just look at the interview. Purposely being dense when asked about her parentage and then walking off. Bringing up her black sons when her mother says one is her sibling they adopted as missionaries.

As for the hate crimes, their local post office said it was near unlikely any mail without proper postage or stamps or markers would have made it through and delivered to her like that. She stumbled upon a swastika on the front door of where she worked at the same time as the cameras magically were turned off. She's completely co-opted the victimization of what REAL visible minorities and black women face.

But hey, how dare I call her out for this.

Seems she has totally stimulated, too a degree I've never seen before.

"it's the thought that counts"

Wow, this is the first I've heard this. That's some top level wacky shit. Not just some lady. leader of the NAACP. Well, I didn't think it was possible to surprise me with internet stories anymore. This is something else though.

What sort of gain does she get from acting black to work for the NAACP?

Seems sort of backwards.

It is backwards. If that's what this story boils down to, then someone should have stepped in and dragged her to a psychiatrist a long ass time ago because she's obviously off in the head.

How someone chooses to look is one thing, but how they behave and what they are saying is something else entirely. How anyone can deride anything from this and not come to the conclusion that this woman has issues is beyond me. Her lies are so deep rooted that she might actually believe them.

What sort of gain does she get from acting black to work for the NAACP?

Seems sort of backwards.

A lot of people like her have a saviour complex. They feel compelled to help others because they think they knows what's best. So she knows she's going to get the side eye talking down to black men as a white woman, telling black people how they should watch 12 years a slave in theaters. But if she pretends she's black, tries to lie to others who think she's black, she can gain credibility. And it's worked. She's the leader of the local chapter of the NAACP. She's applied to be on city councils, working at civil rights and human rights offices. Also, when you carry such strong white guilt, that you want to deny your white father from Montana is your father and lie and say he's a stepfather, and that your real dad is black, and that you're also black, you feel the need to pretend you're also a victim.

All of a sudden she says shes gotten hate speech in the mail which the local post office said was highly unlikely it was delivered to her, she stumbled upon a swastika as she's working but conveniently the cameras were down and no evidence of whoever did it was possible. It's a concerted effort by a non-victim to co-opt the real victimization, in order to bring meaning to her own life. So disingenuous, and I don't know why I'm so angry. Everything she's done and said is tainted with her lies. Patronizing like crazy.

I am unable to understand anything anymore.

I bet if we focus on her plagarizing other people's painting the apologists will be less forgiving, the acknowlegement of racial insensibility is practically impossible for some, but a white woman pretending to be black stealing shit? That is gonna confuse a few of those devil's advocates.

I have no idea how I feel about this story.

My dad had an entire section of his family move to California and pass for white when he was growing up. I never in my lifetime thought I'd see someone, let alone a white person pretend and devote themselves this seriously to being black.

The more I read about her, the more I don't understand. I mean we're all speculating that she received racist threats that she herself planted, but that's based off the fact that this one big lie has now blown up, so we're assuming she's lied about everything? But there's no proof of that(That I can find).

Has she does positive things for the black community? It seems she has, but it's such a weird thing. I literally can't wrap my head around the entire thing.

Actually the speculation about faking the threats is more specifically coming from the investigation into some hate mail she allegedly received which determined the mail was likely put in the PO box by someone with a key.

That last part. Damn. Just hits you like a punch in the gut when you think about it. Reducing ethnic identities and culture to feelings and hairstyles. 'If I feel black, why can't I be black, race is a social construct, we're all from Africa, HOW DARE YOU TELL ME I CAN'T DO SOMETHING'.

So does she have any kids, definitively? I read the original article and saw her four adopted black siblings, but it seems like she either misrepresented them as being hers or she also has an adopted child or children. Multiple posters in this thread are also either confused or picked up info elsewhere, but it's such a storm of weird shit that it's hard to keep the story straight.

that you want to deny your white father from Montana is your father and lie and say he's a stepfather, and that your real dad is black.

Shit, I don't know how I missed this. I was under the impression that she was just being ambiguous about her, and her parent's, heritage in an "I don't like labels sort of way."

Do you not see that you are claiming the right to decide her identity?

I am reading all of this and.. well.. My mind just cannot comprehend what my eyes have seen.

Just when you think the world can not get any crazier someone else just does something that makes you go; WHAT?

Did this one make it in the thread overnight?

Fucking fantastic, haha.

ehh the whole transracial pretending to be black is funny and all, but I'm more disturbed that the woman seems to be the target of an oddly large number of hate crimes, and some of them (the mail that wasn't postmarked that she found in the NAACP PO box) it looks like she did it herself.

http://www.12news.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/06/11/spokane-naacp-president-questions/71101474/

A police report filed in March questions how hate mail ended up in the PO Box for the Spokane chapter of the NAACP. On Wednesday, the Spokane Police Department released an eleven page report into their findings thus far.

In March, Spokane NAACP President Rachel Dolezal claimed she found an envelope with pictures of lynchings and references to local cases concerning race.

The envelope containing the letter was found in the NAACP mailbox at the Rosewood Post Office along North Monroe.

However, investigators later noticed important marks missing from the package.

It was delivered to a post office box. But it did not have a date stamp or barcode according to an on-going police report by SPD.

Postal officials told SPD officers that a letter or package would never be put in a mail box purposefully without those things even if it was hand delivered to the post office. Postal workers said it is possible that the letter could have gotten stuck to another letter and thus missed the scanner and postal marking. But they said the chances of this happening were extremely low.

Staff said the only other way for a unprocessed letter to land in a PO Box would be if it were placed there by someone with a key or a USPS employee was involved.

Security cameras at the Rosewood Post Office were not working at the time the letter was received according to the police report. But police said they have ruled out postal employees as suspects.

Rachel Dolezal said she does not believe anyone within the NAACP could be responsible.

Forensic specialists processed the mail in question. They found numerous smudges according to the police report, and one partial print. Dolezal admitted to opening the letter. As of March 4, forensic specialists had planned to pull Dolezal's print and compare it to the partial.

Police are still processing the envelope as well as its contents for any clues to help identify who sent it. At the time she reported the letter, Dolezal told officers that most of these types of incidents were caused by people affiliated with right wing groups in our area.

Representatives from the NAACP said that all mail sent to their PO Box has been automatically forwarded to their new location since it opened in January. But, Dolezal reported receiving the letter at the PO Box in February.

In May, Dolezal claimed she had received another racially charged letter.

She said the latest one looked like it is from the same person. Dolezal said she wrapped the letter in a grocery bag to avoid getting fingerprints on it so it can be given to detectives. It also made reference to the first letter and was signed 'War Pig' according to Dolezal. She told officers that she had heard the term "War Pig." she believed that they are a hate group which associated with meth dealers and they are violent according to police records.

The second letter was sent to NAACP's Downtown Spokane.

When the original letter was sent in March, it was the ninth hate crime in less than a decade for Rachel Dolezal.

Dolezal told officers she believed the threats were directed at her and her sons. She admitted to filing numerous police reports as a victim of these crimes.

The impossible to deliver hate mail and the shittiest looking noose ever sent by violent right winger meth drug dealers.. lol totally not faking it

Do you not see that you are claiming the right to decide her identity?

Her identity is as a white woman. There is no doubt about that. You don't get to pick and choose when it suits you or your narrative. Wanting to be black, feeling black, doesn't make you black. On this I would fight tooth and nail. The literal identities given to visible minorities will not be co-opted by people ashamed of their own.

Its crazy! there are really liberally people in here defending her actions by saying those thing, but yet they are the same people who would decry any insulting/racist actions....some peoples heads must be ready to explode with the mental gymnastics of trying to be accepting of all and not insulting anyone! so we've had unintended insults to people of ethnic origins (as discussed in the quotes) and unintended insulting comparisons to Transgender people insulting transgender members

Its just boggling my mind that people are effectively legitimising Transrace on the premise that race is a construct and you can be born in the wrong body for your actual race, unintentionally saying all races are completely different, destroying all the civil rights movements that have shown we are one human race all in one fell swoop to be inclusive of everything

You are so much more eloquent at making this point, than i am

Do you not see that you are claiming the right to decide her identity?

She refused to answer the question when asked for her race on camera, she side steps it by saying we are all from Africa, this isnt some delutional woman that thinks she is black from the craddle, she grew up in Montana with her parents well into her teens and decided to start lying to everybody about who she is. Her identity is not black, her identity is that of a deliberate liar, there is not such thing as "transblack", she needs help, not a seal of a approval for this.

Apparently she started pretending around the mid 2000's, which would put her well into her late twenties. She flat out lies about who her father is, and even wrote black on application forms to the city of Spokane.
