Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

The guy got 250k $ just to put together a stage were the bosses come order.
And then another 250k $ to put a timer and a fail condition to the main game.
Plus another 150k $ to add cheat codes.

Many of these stuff questionably deserve the extra money he asked for them.
Given the money we gave him, we deserve something free.
No more stretch goals!
Please!
If he has something extra he could add, he should just add it by him self!

They did give us the New Game+ stretch goal for free.

Thinking about this more, I'm going to hold back on backing this.

Much like MN9, there's almost nothing for me to go on and get excited about. I need concrete game play at least.

There is a video of the first build being shown to IGA. That's way more than I recall MN9 having.

No MN9 had a similar video shortly after

In fact this whol situation is eerily similar to MN9 in a lot of ways

I recall the video, but I didn't follow MN9 closely and didn't realize that was during the campaign. It's odd that so many backers are unhappy with the visuals it ended up with if that video came out during the Kickstarter. Why didn't they just cancel if that wasn't acceptable?

Yeah expectations go wild with kickstarters but that comes with the territory

I mean these are "dream" projects so of course you are going to be flooded by the wishes of thousands who have their own vision of the game they want

Except this video looked good. MN9 looked way rougher. This shows promising art direction. Having said that, I think MN9 looks fine. I think it's trying to evoke the simplicity of the NES days.

I dont believe he was flaunting the video of mn9. When you go to the kickstarter the first thing you see was the hand drawn pic that looks like gameplay while the video was under updates I think

That is unfortunate. This looks very close to the mock up so I am hoping people are happy with the visual style it ends up with.

That is the decisive factor here, amazing what little things can do for a lot of people.

I think it will

No reason they cant hit the concept target. I just hope it animates and plays well. Once criticism for MN9 was how "antiseptic" it looked for a 2D game

By that I mean the art, details, little things to fill out the world that would otherwise look like long blocks and flat rectangles.

Luckily from the Video Koji has a clear idea how he wants the game to look and play. Im positive he will only greenlight work that fits in his vision for the game

Yeah I don't think MN9 looks bad, but on the other hand I can see why people would be disappointed if they expected it to look like the mock up. Maybe Mighty Number 10 will look like that if they make it.

That is true. I went back and forth on that KS trying to make up my mind and I don't believe that pic ever changed and it stayed front and center the whole time unless I'm mistaken.

I also get the sense that IGA and the team he has set up are way more willing and interested in listening to backer feedback regarding aesthetics and shaders and what not than the Mighty No 9 team (which mostly looks fine to me - I feel people over-exaggerate when they talk about it). Strong art direction is the reason so many Nintendo games look so good despite being on inferior hardware. Stronger art direction here should curb many complaints at the head.

I'm still not sure if I want to even buy MN9, the gameplay looks fairly solid but the level layouts look dull, fairly empty and uninteresting.

Honestly I don't have a lot of faith in Inafune which was ultimately the deciding factor in not funding MN9. Igarashi is a different story though, I know his work, I've seen his visions before and I like them. I trust that he is capable of accomplishing what he wants to do and I know he's capable of working with his budget (Although with the way this is ending up in comparison to the usual budgets he got at Konami he could probably complete the game and then build a Scrooge McDuck-Like Money Bin to swim in).

We'll see how it turns out though, I'm hoping it's something we all end up happy with and from what we've seen so far I think it's well on it's way.

IGA has always listened to fan feedback, particularly western fan feedback as he knew it was his main market. If you read through his old interviews it comes up a decent amount and he's attributed many of his choices to it.

So they had a publisher before putting it on KS?

This was known and stated from the initial pitch.

Backed. Been going back and forth all day about doing it since I haven't really played any of the Castlevania games, but the hype got me. And it was a nice middle finger to Konomi.

I must be going mad because I'm actually considering pledging for the 500$ tier to get that map of the castle interior. BTW I don't have money to burn. I have bills to pay. Iga what have you done to me??

Anyway, I sent them a message wanting to know how big their "HUGE" castle interior map was going to be and asking if they could give me more details about it and they replied "likely to be around 24x36 inches." Not the most convincing sales pitch.

So I decided against it. 200$ for a freakin' map is too much. I'm still very satisfied about everything that's included in the 300$ tier.

Just so you know, people who back the KS will be able to increase their pledge to one of the non-limited tiers after the KS has ended. So, if at some point you want to bump up your pledge to get the map, you'll be able to. I sent them a message about this yesterday because I don't have enough to get $300 tier right at this time and they told me I could add to my pledge later just as long as it's not one of the limited tiers.

Did they say anything about pledging after the fact? Such as making a pledge in the first place rather than adding onto a previous one?

I hope they let me up my paypal pledge. Feel iffy about backing twice and don't want stuff to get messed up. I need atleast 100 dollar tier for that Kojima art:(

Edit: Gah, I need that artbook too:(

Got this message yesterday
Koji Igarashi Kickstarter reply message said:
Hi there! Yes, we'll accept Slacker Backer pledges [Paypal]after the Kickstarter, so you can back any tier as usual and it will include the bonus content. (This bonus content, however, will not be available in the retail release). Only the limited-quantity tiers will be unavailable.

The art book will be hardcover.

You can find this and a lot more important information in our newly updated FAQ at the bottom of our page. Thank you!

my lord, this is really going to make 5mill. :o and people say these type of games are dead. I do hope that final game doesn't do a MN9 switch, im not expecting it to be exactly like the concept but as close as possible would be nice. yes i know theres a prototype but guys, the game is in super early stages, its not too late for them to just go "yo fuck this, its too hard to do this hand drawn shit, lets just go 3d models"

Decided to finally pledge...was battling since I'm usually not a fan of KS games. Iga hasn't led me wrong in the past so I'll trust him this go around.

If this is anything to go by, I think we will be alright
EARLY gameplay test footage with IGA critique

EDIT: The prototype isn't 2D, they're already using 3D models

What do you mean? This is 3d models. Just celshading.

Edit: Or is the cellshaders what you mean?

12 hours to go and approx. $100,000 left to hit $5 million (when you count the PayPal contributions).

It's all but guaranteed at this point.

Especially since they still haven't given us updated PayPal numbers since the 150k figure. For all we know, we might already be at 5 million if PayPal raised 100k on its own in the last two days.

True.

And even if it doesn't, they said the campaign will continue post-Kickstarter via Paypal so it's only a matter of time.

These are 3D models though.

Thanks for the information; just wanted to be sure because I might actually have to hold off on my pledge depending on if a certain situation of mine clears up or not.

Same here. I want to back this so much, but I have to wait until next week.
I don't want to miss out on all the backer rewards so I've been triple confirming on backing after the kickstarted has ended.

The only question is how long before they end "backing thru paypal" to receive the backer rewards

I still think this was bloody brilliant btw, great way to tap social media for your game.

Execution was kinda janky at first but yeah, it's a nice way to get the community engaged.

It was only hanky because everybody was asleep on how fast this got funded.

Good kind of jank.
We didn't need to reach any milestones or open up any achievements to see the next stretch goal because we already blew past ALL of them.

They had to take a day to make a whole new set :P

Er, no?

The typical Igavania castle consists overwhelmingly of bland, generic rooms filled with enemies and a few simple obstacles, with little to nothing in the way of puzzles or platforming challenges designed around your newly acquired abilities. They've always been more side-scrolling loot-based dungeon crawlers than Metroid-style platformers, despite borrowing their basic structure from the latter.

Enemy placing can be the major part of level design.

I can't justify spending 250 bucks on this but the goodies in that collectorsbox are so darn nice I might crack. I hope I can upgrade and upgrade in increments so i can spread it out over two months to make it sting less.
