Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

The guy got 250k $ just to put together a stage were the bosses come order.
And then another 250k $ to put a timer and a fail condition to the main game.
Plus another 150k $ to add cheat codes.

Many of these stuff questionably deserve the extra money he asked for them.
Given the money we gave him, we deserve something free.
No more stretch goals!
Please!
If he has something extra he could add, he should just add it by him self!

You take stretch goals way too literally.

I submitted this question to IGA via the KS page, but maybe somebody here already knows. I imagine they are inundated with emails today...

I am currently backing at $60. If I up the pledge to $100, can I get a physical game, a digital game, and my name in the credits? I'm not interested in the trinkets and stuff at that tier, I just want the game and a nice sleeve, but I think it'd be neat to have my name in the credits as part of the backer community. Anybody know this?

No, you need to do $125.

Just to make sure, paypal donations will stay open til the end of the month right? I want to make sure that I understood that right and not making a mistake.

So a few days ago, the average pledge was at about 82 bucks. Now that the almost-slacker-backers are starting to pledge, it's at... 84!?

You'd think more backers = average pledge going down, but damn! People really want the 100+ tiers!

Huh. I did NOT know Ben Judd was the voice of Phoenix Wright.

The original DS ones, yeah. Not in UMVC3 or the 3DS game :/

Ahh, I see. Still, badass.

I really want to know who is voicing Miriam. I want a sample. Her concept art is (in some places) really placid and demure. I don't want a blank, inexpressive Miriam.

I want a fearsome badass. Or some degree of confidence, at least.

I want quiet, calm, confidence. Not mistaking "calm" for emotionless.

Can't wait for the reveals of both her English and Japanese voices.

Granted, people love Castlevania, people want to stick it to Konami, and the live action IGA publicity video was pretty cleaver, so I get why it's hapenning... But just like with Mighty Number 9, it kinda pisses me off that a well known Japanease dev can basically show a couple pictures that take a couple of hours at best to photoshop and walk away with million of dollars on a project that's pretty much an idea on a napkin at this point.

Meanwhile, games like Little Devil Inside struggles to amass 300k even though they poured their own money and effort into making an awesome trailer showcasing every feature of the game, the art style and what makes the game unique... And that's just one of the numerous stories that comes to mind, not including all the high-potential, high talent projects that get canned due to limited fundings on Kickstarter.

Personally, I wish these so called "Legendary" developpers would actually take the time to develop some content before asking for money... And at the very least offer similar effort to what some of their lesser known competition does... Not just hiring a PR company to "stage" an elaborate Kickstarter campaign... Basically, more content, less filler and PR stuff. Then again, as long as gamers keep being attracted to known names over new ideas, stuff like this will happen.

So while yes, I'm somewhat excited about a new "Castlevania-esque" game by IGA like most of you, I didn't contribute, personally, because I don't buy into promises. Show me some effort, then you'll get my money, IGA.

Can we upgrade our pledge after the initial Kickstarter run? I wanna put some money down, but can't afford the $60 tier right now.

Maybe through paypal? Not sure.

Man has a track record and is responsible for making more than a half-dozen of my favorite games, of course I want him to make more. Has nothing to do with sticking it to konami, for me, but more for getting ANOTHER game from one of my top 5 developers in my favorite genre.

That's not to say I don't contribute to smaller kickstarters, too, but with this one, i'm 99% sure i'm going to get a game that I want to play and that it will be made the way his past games were made.

Kickstarters from unknown devs... are not so much a sure thing. This is a faith thing, and I have more faith in iga than someone I don't know.

Luckily for you, those of us that buy into these promises will give you the opportunity to buy a Castlevania-esque game in the future.

Looks like a lot more than an idea on a napkin to me.

Wonder how iga feels about this. It's gotta seem kinda like an affirmation of the last twenty years of his life's work.

IGA said:
'They have faith in our ability, but they need to see the support of the community before their funding'… It was a theme so vital to any future chance I had at doing another Igavania-type game, that I actually said it twice in Japanese in the announcement video… And that’s how this Kickstarter journey began.
When we launched the Kickstarter not only did we prove the market for a game like this, we became the Number 1 video game Kickstarter of all time. I wish I could rewind the clock to the beginning of the campaign and kick myself for thinking we would probably only raise 800,000 if we got lucky.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from an incredible community. So with that, Army of the Night, I will turn myself to the task of making a game truly worthy of all your kindness. I will not let you down.

Disbelief, from the sound of it.

I remember Ben Judd also saying something similar "didn't think we'd hit 300k"

<snip>

Koji Igarashi gets 5 million dollars on Kickstarter because he spent 15 years proving to fans that he can produce game after game and maintain a high level of quality.

Kickstarter is a great platform for indie developers to make their break into the industry, but let's not pretend that IGA is being unfairly favoured. He earned that confidence from the backers over the course of a career.

And concept art is an actual thing that people do for a living. It's a little disrespectful to hand wave it off as "a couple of hours at best to photoshop." I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate someone shitting all over your profession like that.

Iga made Castlevania games for years, that's the effort he needed to get us to give him 5 fucking million dollars.

unproven devs have to do more effort because they aren't "legendary devs".

Little Devils looks amazing, and I wish it got more money. But this idea that kickstarters with famous people involved need to work harder than indies to "deserve" their money is so messed up I don't even know what to say. I might agree with you if, for example, every single one of Iga's games with Konami had been utter shit.

But no. The man is known for this type of game. Michiru Yamane and Ippo Yamada are also known for amazing music. It's absolutely ludicrous to hold grudges against the people involved because they are known for being good at what they do. Are Yamane and Yamada suddenly going to compose awful music because this is a kickstarter game and we only have one sample from each of them for this particular title? Did they not put in enough work to deserve the backing?

Edit: 34.5k TO GO, BOYS

I really want to know who is voicing Miriam. I want a sample. Her concept art is (in some places) really placid and demure. I don't want a blank, inexpressive Miriam.

I want a fearsome badass. Or some degree of confidence, at least.

I doubt they've decided her voice actress yet. Anyway, while I agree with you that we could certainly use some more "ferocious" artwork of her, I don't think its fair to take a picture of her say baking a cake as a sign of "weakness". I don't think a character needs a permanent scowl on their face to be a badass. I'm certainly curious to see how/where they take her character though and I hope its awesome places :)

IGA spent 6 months unemployed trying to get publisher money to make this game. Eventually he had to take a dayjob at Artplay to feed his family. So while I'd loved it if there were more to show right now, you can get out of here with this "herp a derp IGA is lazy" narrative. Also, being one of the most influential designers of the 2D action/exploration genre who has delivered multiple beloved and heavily influential titles over the years isn't nothing. The man worked for and earned his reputation. Save your moral outrage for something/somewhere else.
