NAACP Leader Exposed as White Woman in Blackface

She either has a mental illness or can't live with the way her body looks. If either those are acceptable reasons to ridicule someone, I want out.

You're reaching.

She hasn't been diagnosed for a mental illness, as far as I've read in articles.

It really seems like she did it rationally in order to gain social standing/credibility as an activist and civil rights leader, which is a fairly rational line of thinking.

It's misplaced when it's equating it with something like being transgender to try and understand it.

Oh, I'm not doing that. I'm comparing it to people who are crazy. Mental illness is not some rare phenomenon; nearly 1 in 5 Americans will suffer some mental illness in their lifetimes, albeit that the majority of those are anxiety and depression. Even with those removed as "not counting," you're left with about 1 in 11 Americans.

I cannot diagnose her, both because I'm not a doctor and she's not my patient even if I were. But her behavior is ridiculous enough that I'm reticent to laugh.

If you want another example, here is one: do you remember when Amanda Bynes had her breakdown a year or two ago? She posted really vulgar things on twitter and there was a thread about it on GAF. At first, people were laughing; lol she's posting about wanting to have sex with drake, what a weirdo, another Disney breakdown!

But over time, she began lighting things on fire and running through the streets naked, and it became increasingly clear that this wasn't just some girl who had grown up and found her sexuality, this was a person suffering from mental illness, and it gradually became less funny. Again, we could not diagnose her. Most of us aren't doctors, and even if we were, she's not our patient. But it was clear enough that laughing seemed rather mean spirited. It was quite possible that she was suffering from mental illness, and I don't really like pointing and laughing at mentally ill people. Later on, it was confirmed that yes, she was indeed mentally ill.

The woman in the OP is on this spectrum. Am I absolutely confident that she's mentally ill? No, of course not. Again, not a doctor. But it's crazy enough behavior (and not just the behavior itself, but her responses in interviews) that it's something I'd be highly suspicious of.

Given that it seems at least quite plausible that she's mentally ill, I'd rather avoid pointing and laughing only to later feel super bad about it if she's diagnosed with bipolar disorder or a disassociative disorder or something.

Damn, Dude, you're extra grouchy today. Last line made me crack up though.

I do not abide busybodies.

Gee, i dont know. Maybe due to the fact that she is lying and manipulating people around her, that she has a fake "dad" and that she is making a mockery of the organization that she represents? Or that being black is simply a costume for her, that she can put on and take off whenever she feels like.

Lives that are devoid of meaning are the ones constructed upon layers of lies. Being a weirdo to me is accepting any and all forms of "i am a Horsekin!" without any critical thinking or logic.

But hey, thats like, my opinon, dude

You were talking about this woman specifically? It seemed to me you were ranting generally about how "liberals" don't say "no" to people who claim they're something other than what you think they are. What do you care if someone says they're a horsekin? Complaining about that doesn't really have much to do with thinking or logic.

That should really be self explanatory and not even a question you should wonder about. You use "fucking weirdos" for conservatives but not for people who think they are horses or for a woman who has constructed a entire lie around her life?

It's similar (though not the same) to how I laughed about amy winehouse at first, and then I quickly realized she had a serious, serious, serious problem.

Ask her if she's pretending or if she IS. This is what I'm saying - she hasn't done this for any other purpose than to be this specific person. Being black doesn't get her any advantages - if anything, the opposite. As far as anyone call tell from reporting so far, the only reason she's being black is so she can be black because that's who she feels she is.

She doesn't even say she identifies as African American. It was already asked, don't you remember the video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKRj_h7vmMM&t=8m36s

"Are you African American?"

"I don't understand the question."

I'm not sure I agree. This woman's behavior passes through "make fun of her LOL" right in to "she likely has a mental illness."

The woman in the OP is on this spectrum. Am I absolutely confident that she's mentally ill? No, of course not. Again, not a doctor. But it's crazy enough behavior (and not just the behavior itself, but her responses in interviews) that it's something I'd be highly suspicious of.

If she has some sort of mental illness, judging by the complicated web of lies and deception, seemingly to manipulate others and get herself over, it would likely be a form of antisocial personality disorder. Meaning, she would be fully aware of reality, and that she was lying, but just not have the inner moral compass (or whatever) to prevent her from continuing to lie and manipulate people.

I have some personal experience in being abused by a person with this disorder, and the aftertaste of that experience was traumatic enough that I went into counseling to deal with it. One of the first things a mental health professional will tell you is that, as a healthy person, having that reflexive sympathy you'd normally have for any ill person--well, when you are talking about a sociopath--it isn't really helpful at all. It isn't really like other mental illnesses.

Spokane Washington isn't Ferguson Missouri. She likely never even faced real discrimination, especially seeing as how there are numerous issues with all the hate crime complaints she's lodged. Additionally she also has the benefit of growing up white.

Also, she wasn't a black woman for 8 years, you can't be something you're not. Putting on some bronzer and getting your hair braided doesn't make you a black woman. I literally do not know why you do not understand this. You even said you're not American, so I'm assuming you're white/European? Why are you sticking up for this manipulative liar who is rightfully being called out?

You obviously have no idea about Spokane Washington. It's one of the most racist places I ever lived.

When I was in the military there White supremacists would regularly put racist literature and pamphlets door to door at houses and businesses. Hell it was 25 minutes away from Aryan nation headquarters.

I wonder if her parents being missionaries created the environment necessary for whatever this is to manifest itself.

Its like being in a cult, except you're not keeping it to yourself.

man, white people always get the "mentally ill" card, but let one of us black people do some off the wall shit, and its like "troubled upbringing...bad neighborhood...rap music influence".

Like yo, can we get a poverty disease maybe? Post-Poor/Uneducated/Neglected-As-Fuck Disorder?

Nah on the mental illness. That goes out the window when she outright made social progress by doing what she was doing. Husband, kids, head of a chapter of the NAACP.

Mental illness comes in many forms, but most of the time it's self-destructive or something to be mitigated. She made a life out of this, climbed social ladders because of this.

This is how i feel about Shia Labeouf. I refuse to laugh at his antics that go viral because im not sure if he is trolling or legit mentally ill.

Right when its white people doing crazy bat shit insane stuff. Its because they are mentality ill and they get defended to the sun and moon and have made up words appropriated to them.

I can kinda see where people are getting ideas about trans people from; if you replace 'black' with 'woman' in some contexts, you get statements used by terrible people to shit on us (see that recent NYT article about Caitlyn Jenner and "real woman" bs), however, where that breaks down is the distinction between race (a social construct) and sex+gender (a biological construct in tandem with a social construct).

Ummm not really race is a biological contruct. It is SPECIFICALLY a biological trait. If tomorrow all humans lost all ability to think or reason or communicate. Race would still be a characteristic of our bodies.

Gender on the other hand is completely social construct. In that gender refers to how you act, how you feel, how you dress, etc

Transexuals don't actually change their sex. They technically change their gender and sometimes their genitals. Sex (scientifically) refers to the size of the gametes produced by the body. In simple terms females produce large gametes and males produce smaller gametes.

Did I hear on CNN that her chapter of the NAACP convened an emergency meeting last night and is keeping her on? Was at the gym so may have misheard.

She's been at it for years though. It's not like some manic episode where she figured out how to get a job and keep one, all while interacting with people.

Huh so there seem to be three broad positions here.

1. Lolcrazy

2. She seems like she needs mental help.

3. She doesn't need mental help she just identifies as a different race. It's not abnormal behavior because there is really no such thing as 'normal'.

Some shit like that or at least more to the point the NAACP is taking this as a none issue because reasons. Plus they don't want to look like fools.

know what popped in my head while reading more and more about her, Münchausen syndrome by proxy. Not the exact thing but seems like they could be related.

Maybe, the possibly fake treats and her rants about the black community put it withing the spectrum of facticious disorders, I dont know her but the fact that she essentially based her whole identify on being black down to the point that her career is advocating for blacks tells me that she is getting some personal gain from it like it usually happens. Another difference between this and an hypotetical racial body disphoria, the "change" is not to seek a gain, its to find uniformity within one's self.

Eh, thats society who is to blame, not the actual crazy white people.

I can't even imagine what she and her immediate family must be going through right now. It's international news, and you know she's going to be lampooned on all the talk shows tonight. Her name's also been #1 on Twitter since the news broke yesterday. The story is simultaneously hilarious, infuriating, fascinating, and sad - there are so many angles to it. It's the exact kind of thing that captures the public's imagination and spurs on countless debates and discussions. She's become the biggest laughingstock in recent memory, and I can't help but hope that somebody's looking out for her well being.

Anyway, the NAACP just put out a statement an hour ago:

NAACP STATEMENT ON RACHEL DOLEZAL

For 106 years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has held a long and proud tradition of receiving support from people of all faiths, races, colors and creeds. NAACP Spokane Washington Branch President Rachel Dolezal is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter. One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership. The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record. In every corner of this country, the NAACP remains committed to securing political, educational, and economic justice for all people, and we encourage Americans of all stripes to become members and serve as leaders in our organization.

Hate language sent through mail and social media along with credible threats continue to be a serious issue for our units in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. We take all threats seriously and encourage the FBI and the Department of Justice to fully investigate each occurrence.

She is attempting empathy by not only saying "I understand the African American people, I am knowledgeable of their experience, and love their culture", but by twisting this into "I am the African American people, I have lived their experience, I am their culture." It's a lie that not only trivializes blackness to mere skin tone and memes (eg "lol white people at the movies"), it does a disservice to the whole equality movement when people start asking questions about her dubious "hate crime" experiences.

I agree - I've said this in the thread before. I am very uncomfortable with the fact that she went beyond choosing black appearance and went on to claim black heritage. I think that was wrong. The only issue I have with calling this out as horrendous is that, if she choose black appearance but not heritage, everyone would either accuse her of being mad, deeply insulting, or find her totally laughable and ridiculous. That's a difficult position for anyone to be in; so I can understand lying - although I still think it is wrong.

you will need to wear a tweed jacket and a lab coat to untangle this string theory of fuckery.

No, Mia. No. I see this shit has already begun. What an interesting next few weeks we have.

This is such a peculiar issue, largely because I'm a moderate that often asks why society condemns or condones certain behavior or actions.

A man seeks to be identified by a new gender? She gets celebrated on a magazine cover.
A woman seeks to be identified by a new race? She gets laughed at and ridiculed by and large.

I see very little difference between the issue of self-identity (outside of how society views both sex and race); two individuals both are unhappy with their prescribed race/gender and, through effort, decides to live as an identity they are happy with.

I question how the same people who praise Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn can be the same people who instantly think a woman living as black has a "mental illness".

Transgender and transethnic I think are interesting discussions, not just about the individuals who "pretend" to live as something else, but as those that judge, praise, or condemn these individuals for doing what they want with their body, their lives, to feel happy with themselves.

How we views others says a lot about us as well.

I'd like to take this moment to reveal something I've been struggling with for years. I identify as Japanese.

Call me Sasuke.

Thanks for your understanding.

Bleh. You're right.

I am still hesitant to ascribe dishonest behavior (and you know she knows what's up in that interview) to mental illness, though, because I think it contributes to the further stigmatization of mental illness.

You don't seem to get what going on beyond just whats on the surface. Its her actions in order to get there. Her lies.

I used fucking weirdos for people who get all worked up about the fact that some other person they don't even know identifies as a horse or a tree or a dragon or whatever. For example, I find it somewhat odd that people like to watch men in booty shorts pretend to fight each other but I don't rant about how awful it is and it's all liberals fault. It doesn't affect me so it doesn't bother me.

"It's self-explanatory" is not an argument, BTW.

Spokane Washington is racist as shit dog. My previous boss who had to work there for a couple years could not get out of there fast enough. Eastern Washington is pretty fucked up in regards to racism.
