Was Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts a financial success for Microsoft when it was released in 2008 on the 360?
Something people often forget is that people DID stop buying these games, which made publishers apprehensive about making them. The buyer base was either not growing or unsustainably small for the effort required to produce a video game. So they moved on to more lucrative projects.
Kickstarters like Yooka-Laylee and Bloodstained attract a lot of new players who have never played Banjo or Castlevania before because of the publicity they generate and people wanting to support the underdog. Look how many times in this thread alone people have asked which Castlevania games they should play.
The people backing Bloodstained now aren't just the people who bought Order of Ecclesia, you know what I mean?
Which is not at all to say publishers are 100% right and there is no market for these games until they suddenly generate one with a high-profile Kickstarter, but it's important to consider that these Kickstarters get a lot more goodwill than probably the last entry in the series they're succeeding did.
I would be very curious to see Bloodstained's eventual numbers compared to the DS Castlevanias, as well as MM9's compared to Mega Man 9+10, and YL to Banjo Tooie's.
