They had a 3 minute montage of exploring the wasteland and blowing baddies to pieces. It's the video that starts with "Hey boy, let's fuck stuff up..." or whatever he says.

The presenter made it clear that you don't have to do *any* of the civilization building if you don't want to. But, that mode for me is really going to pull me in. I love the feeling of a safe zone in the midst of the wilderness, which is one of the reasons I really liked Hearthfire or whatever that DLC was for Skyrim. But, if you don't like it, you don't need to do it at all.
 
PS: is it just me or Todd Howard trolled Nintendo with that "second screens are fucking stupid gimmicks"? rotfl

What a stupid, irrelevant comment. Seriously the word 'gimmick' has lost all meaning and purpose. In what way, Todd Howard, is a second screen any more of a gimmick than a shoulder button or a graphical or artistic design choice? Isn't everything a gimmick if we're going to chuck the word at anything gaming-related?

Being boring is a greater sin in gaming than something being coherent in my opinion.

The Mojave wasteland is boring place to explore compared to the Capital wasteland and I'm in these games for the exploration.

The Pip boy thing seem like just a cute novelty anyway. Heck, at least Smartglass stuff was mostly relevant. It was a strange dig.
 
Well, there goes another 100 hundreds hours of more of my life, hope they get another great soundtrack in this one i loved just roaming around listening to galaxy news radio in FO3

Lol. Pretty sure it was obvious he was talking about second screen companion phone apps for games. Not a direct dig at the WiiU.
 
oh great vats is back... ugh im not going to hate on this game to hard since i didn't even finish 3 but i very much doubt ill even pick this one up

the gameplay looks better but fallout 3 was one of the ugliest games of its time and so is this one so not really shocked, and everyone saying "DAYONE" ugh F3 was full of bugs even if i was hyped id hold off till the patch it a couple of times honestly
 
I kinda just wanted FO3++ if I'm honest. This looks like that with a minecrafty thing added onto it. As long as it doesn't break the lore of this awesome universe then eh.

People keep saying this but I honestly don't see it. Did people actually enjoy exploring Fallout 3's tunnel system? Because all of that stuff looks the same to me.
 
3 things bother me:
*Its still a waste land even after 200 years (there'd be far more vegetation, look at Japan).
*The dog has better smoother animations than the player.
*Character creation looks like Sims 4, which is hated because its a pain in the ass to keep spinning the camera to tweak your character's nose.

Crafting system looks fun and so does the ability to build your own city. Shadows and lighting looks better.

In the end I'm getting it, don't know if I'll spend money on the Collectors Edition for the Pipboy though.

Mojave could certainly have been more than it was. I'm guessing they were a bit pressed for time, but I seriously cannot go back to the capital wasteland after. It's just stupid and unbelievable. That takes all the fun out of it for me.

It will depend on the extent to how important you can make your settlements, but by them saying they want it to be optional for players to do, they can't make the settlements the end all when it comes to stuff like gear. I can see it being a more for fun time waster and maybe a source of some exclusive items

I enjoyed NV more than F3 and I'd still agree that exploring the Mojave wasn't nearly as interesting or fun as exploring DC. Sure, there's boring stuff in that too, but NV's lack of landmarks and general flatness and extreme expanses of nothingness were pretty boring. I didn't do nearly as much "roaming" as I did in Fallout 3 because of it.

I'm one of those that loved Fallout 3 over New Vegas and the primary reason was that for all the 'good' writing the game had it was clearly at the expense of making the Mojave an actually interesting place to explore. New Vegas was a massive disappointment on that front and the main reason I played it significantly less than Fallout 3.

The Mojave was truly a boring wasteland compared to the Capital wasteland due to the fact it simply did not compare to the amount of places you could go to and explore. For every one area you had to explore in New Vegas you had 5 in Fallout 3 and they were all individually more interesting than the one you found in NV.

I totally agree. I've been replaying Fallout 3 and I love the exploration of a dense urban area. I just ran across a small shelter in an overpass that was full of plungers stuck on walls and on a mannequin. There was a dead ghoul in it so I think it was someone who went crazy from the radiation. I miss those little things in New Vegas.

I just need something that feels rewarding beyond "I just spent 5 hours building this base, it looks badass and cool and now I'm done and none of this really mattered." I don't need or really want it to have a major impact on the world, but just something to make it feel like it was worth it. Like some NPC interactions, some little mutated wasteland kid telling me thanks for giving them a bed they can sleep in where they don't fear the bad men.

What will turn me off immediately from it all is if after spending the time setting everything up, cultivating a community, placing all my stuff just how I like it the only payoff is some slightly better items and more importantly the need to defend it every couple hours from raiders and that's it.

Just because it's optional and not required in the main story doesn't mean they can't have some worthwhile development and depth to it. So I hope there's something there.
 
The Todd Howard hype machines doing it's job once again.

I'm definitely echoing the sentiments of others but that was pretty much a textbook AAA reveal. The marketing team barely has to lift a finger after what Todd already did.

Graphics? Very nice step up from FO3/Skyrim, but average for what my expectations are for the current generation. The House you start off in had next to no shadows on any of the smaller objects and this was very noticeable. The baby looked like it was floating due to the flat lighting behind him. Outside environments looked much nicer.

As far as "new" stuff goes, there was a lot of stuff that was new to Fallout, but not new to gaming. The weapon crafting and world building has all been seen before in many other games. Having to manually setup an electrical grid to power your stuff was the only thing that intrigued me on that section. It's great to have it in FO4, but nothing exciting.

Hard to judge gameplay but the animations look typical and the awkward insta-ragdoll deaths look as bad as ever. They should have looked at Rage on how to do proper enemy hit reactions and death. Because of this the combat looks too identical to FO3. Power Suit looks awesome.


As always, Howard made a bunch of promises but everyone should have learned not to fall for his hype by now. For 4 years of work this isn't exactly what I expected, but its what I should have expected from Bethesda. I'm looking forward to FO4 for one reason, not a single other game will have this huge world with this huge combination of features available. It's lacking graphically, and probably gameplay wise also, but the experience will be completely unique because you won't find another game with everything FO4 SEEMS to offer.

Day 1 because I'm a sucka

IMO, saying things like, "OMG fucking sims in my Fallout, where is the combat?!?!", when combat was the feature of an entire video (along with exploring, crafting and everything that makes fallout fallout) is borderline trolling.

yup and fallout 3 world is better in every way compared to new Vegas. The characters are pretty similar in both games.

Yes fallout 3 world was more interesting, had better exploration and unique things that were more interesting to come across
across. New Vegas was very disappointing in that aspect.
 
This is the opposite of Doom in where it has great gameplay systems and customisation which will add a lot of depth to the game. But it looks awful by AAA standards and it moves awful as well. It's pathetic given how big a game this is.

Doom looks pretty good but lacks in game play for me.

Eh it's the same bait and switch as every single "completely optional" thing in open world games: it's compleeeeetely optional*

* except you have to do it once in the tutorial and oh yeah your game will most likely suffer you don't.

Actually the bomb which exploded in Japan was up in the air which caused minimum fallout. If a nuke was actually exploded at ground level the damage would have been longer lasting.
 
I'm still in awe after watching the game last night.

I'm surprised that I'm so excited in building a base for a game that is pretty much the complete opposite of that, probably because I liked The Sims. I can't wait for people to get creative and show off some real creations with it. It usually irked me when I played 3 or Skyrim and I end up finding some useless scraps, so I'm glad that they have a real purpose now.

I'm gonna be all over the base building and weapon modding. I'm completely stoked about choosing your own layout for bases... That alone is gonna be a huge time sink. So damn excited and can't believe it's coming in November.

It may needlessly require us to spend extra time listening to the serviceable dialogue Bethesda writes now that we can't just read what our character says in plain text. Other's for whatever reason believe it will somehow impact the RPing in the game and limit dialogue options, but I guess they forgot this was a Bethesda game, so there isn't really any danger of that.

Maybe not necessarily, as we were only given a taste of the very beginning of the game. Usually skill based options present themselves after the first 20 mins of gameplay. It's going to take some getting used to the dialogue buttons, I wouldn't rule skill checks out just yet.
