Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Sweet mother of god, the X1 just became the greatest console of all time for the hardcore.

But PSPlus still makes me recommend the PS4 over it to most people...

Hopefully this means less remasters.

Both from less need to catch up people who didn't have a 360, and the fact that most people won't buy them.

wow. gamechanger indeed.

but does the ONE need a chip like the PS3 BC in order to play ps2 games? or will this just be an update?

The big question is:

How is the emulation being done?! Is it totally software or streaming?

I honestly expect it will be a mixture of both. You will get the assets from the disc and the game engine will be run on Live.

Native. The games will be recompiled to run ON the One, not just an emulated 360.

People overhyping this like crazy. Honestly, how many people that own an XB1 are going to put in a 360 disc? And of those people, how many will do it more than a handful of times past the novelty stage? Yes, having the option available is better than not, but it's not a game changer. The average consumer isn't going to care and won't even know the feature exists.

People on forums like this seem to think they live in some bubble where everyone is in the know. I hate to break it to you, but the majority of people that buy game consoles have no idea what's going on. They don't visit game forums daily. They don't watch E3 conferences. They don't pick and scratch for every little detail they can find.

BC is nice to have but it's not going to tip the scales.

And before you all give me anecdotes of how you used PS3 BC and X360 BC a million times each, that's meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It's good for you but it's not a "megaton." You're not the majority. You're the minority. An extremely small minority at that.

If we were all in the minority, then they'd have had no reason to actually put this feature in. The fact that they did means 1 of 2 things - either A) People have actually asked for it, multiple times, enough for them to try and figure out how to make it work, or 2) they wanted to give this extreme minority you're speaking of hard-ons.

Somehow, I doubt B is the correct answer.

Depends how many people care enough after a year and a half after its debut. The further you get from the last gen the less people care about it. Sony removed backwards comparability from the PS3 and it really didn't impact its sales.

I don't remember it having any sales impact.

Personally this feature would have made alot more impact at the launch of the Xbox one as it would have helped lessen the impact of a $500 Xbox one, but 18 months later i'm not sure how many folks are going to care about playing old 360 games, and even then only a limited set.

It is a nice feature, but i wonder if the resources were better spent elsewhere.

This is a pretty big deal.

Holy shit!! I can play my XBLA games on the Bone?!!! I'm going to need a bigger HDD!

This is huge. If Sony has no bc surprise, I can see the sales swinging over towards Xbox in the future. Hopefully every publisher is on board with this.

Oh god, oh god. Do we know if 360 controllers work because I still have my Rock Band guitars in my closet and Rock Band 3 is one of my favorite games of all time and does DLC carry over oh god i'm hyperventilating Microsoft pls

Funny enough, getting rid of 360 was a hard decision for me because I really loved Halo and Alan Wake but I parted ways with it in favor of next gen. All my other games were on PC or PS3.

I felt better when I saw a Halo collection was out for X1 and Alan was on PC already. Now they rumor that even Alan might be getting a next gen version.

So really BC for X1 means nothing for me, aside from being able to get cheap games from Gamestop that MIGHT play on the X1 eventually.

Better keeps tabs on the growing list.

Although I sold my 360 when the Xbox One launched I am happy this is available as I truly feel it will pressure Sony to produce a similar solution for the PS4 (since I still have my PS3 and about 30 games sitting here in a closet).

I don't own a X1 or any 360 games and this is a Megaton.

Sony doing this would be a big deal for me since that is my main console. If I were to buy an XBONE for this it would be meaningless since I would still switch between consoles. My dream is to finally disconnect my PS3 and have one dedicated console + PC. Still, huge news, and Sony CAN'T respond (Cell Processessor says hi)

Agreed, this isn't a "game changer". It's a nice feature to have but not a game changer.

Looks like I'll be replaying Fallout 3 before FO4.

Huge news. I hope Sony has something similar because PS Now doesn't cut it.

BC sure isn't going to make me run out and buy the console. The only thing I play on my 360 anymore is USF4, and that'll be fixed up by Sony shortly for the PS4. That might have been cool when the system was announced. Now? Too little, too late.

It would be impossible for publishers and developers to upload digital versions just for this.

Wait a second...

That's assuming that the devs/pubs are still around and that there aren't any other issues preventing a rerelease (licensing/etc.).

I highly doubt stuff like UMvC3 will ever be compatible.

Now to find cheap copies of both Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

Perfect example of what I'm talking about.

I had to laugh when he announced this. I've got a massive library of PS1-3 games that I can't play on my PS4, and my Xbox One is the first Xbox console I've ever bought. Good on MS, though, for making this possible.

If we can also buy titles from the 360's digital marketplace off of the One, I'm sure to get some use out of this.

I'll be crawling CAG and Amazon warehouse for some of the 360 titles I always wanted to try out, at any rate.

I was not expecting that

This is going to cost Microsoft more money.

They have to pay people to work on each game to get them to work and show no profit from it.

They can respond with ps1/ps2 games at least. Or I hope. :/ Ps3 is probably not possible.

Here is my armchair analysis - XBLA and 360 titles are still sold digitally so they can now continue those sales on the One.

I don't think this is a "gamechanger" in the sense that it will magically have Microsoft win NPD every time from now on or whatever, but an already convenient system that does a lot just got way more convenient for me :P

Gamechanger

This solves my Rockband DLC issue.
I was 100% in the "never going to buy an XB1" camp until now. Can't get more anecdotal than self-reporting but whatever. Great move MS.

If this somehow gets PS4 to follow suit that'd be huge. PSNow is an awful alternative all around.
