Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

For people who says it mean nothing - the difference between BC now and BC back in the day is that there is an easy avenue for people to buy new (revenue generating) copies of games via their digital store. Adding a 1000 game+ back catalog (saying they can get all of this stuff working) to the store so that you can play on a relevant piece of hardware will probably add some decent sales over the course of the gen.

This is a big deal and game changer for many people on GAF who find the feature useful and those gamers should be happy. I'm not sure how much of a game changer this will be beyond that.

The PS3 allowed full BC with the PS1 and PS2 which made for a massive library. They had it at launch and it did not allow it to move more consoles than the 360 at the start. It was a feature Sony felt comfortable dumping and it did nothing to the PS3 sales.

Big news on GAF does not always equal big news to the general gaming public but that shouldn't stop anyone from being happy about this.

Hopefully MSFT does it right and has a large library of 360 games.

People are forgetting this.

Very cool. Wonder if it will stay xone exclusive or if they'll port it into windows 10. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to play RDR again!

Either way, on a technical level it will provide some interesting info for the various 360 emulation projects.

If the 360 RPGs are compatible I will trade it in this weekend for the Xbone.

If you're not in the Preview program, you'll have to wait until the end of the year + however long it takes for the publishers/rights holders to approve BC support, if ever.

Also this is not even full BC but a small list of games as of right now .
And pubs can choose to say no makes it even less of game changer like people saying .
Still it is nice once they keep on adding games.

Considering how the PS3 launched with full access to the entire PS2 library and it struggled out of sales gate (for a lot of reasons, obviously), I kind of think he might be right. Backwards compatibility is definitely welcomed, but I don't know if this will move that many more units.

The used PS3 BC models are the most sought after.

We even still have people today who dont know that all PS3's play PS1 discs. Backwards compatability doesnt penetrate the casual crowd and has never been a selling factor.

its an option, and options are nice.

The Giant Bomb videogame website didn't know there were PS2 games for sale digitally on PSN to play on any PS3 a year after they started being sold.

BC has never historically been anything close to a "game changer" so I'm confused as to the people who think this will in any way affect the Xbox's market position.

I agree. I barely played PS1 or 2 games on my PS3. It's a new console so I want to play new things. It's not like my 360 will just go in the trash when I buy an X1. It's nice that they're adding the feature, but it's going to be 2 years since launch and it should have been available then to make the best use of the announcement.

Wow. Wouldn't have expected that, but after how badly MS half assed OG Xbox BC on 360, I'll be waiting for a more in-depth analysis of the feature when it launches to see how well it works.

Ifit's truly fully functional though, then yeah, I'll gladly get another Xbone now.

I thought there were 100 compatible games?

The key word is "there WILL be 100 compatible games".

This is a show me the receipts situation because they have pulled this trick on us with 360 compatibility with OG Xbox games and we know how that worked out.

I was super excited but now I'm super suspect, especially with that list.

I personally think this will be a non-followed up checkmark item like the 360's BC. Prove me wrong Microsoft.

This is backwards compatibility like the 360 had if people weren't aware. Not 100% and will cover specific games, otherwise all the "this game will be work with backwards compatibility" wouldn't matter.

So that imperfect software BC solution again? Well it would have to be considering i suppose. If there's a big enough pool of games, that might make up for the fact that not everything is compatible in prospective consumer's eyes. I wonder if they will have upgrades like 4XMSAA for all games like the 360's software BC?

Wow with BC, MS has now upped PS4 with BC list. Sony's move now on how rhey'll react to BC as BC was one of the main features for Sony until the PS3 mid gen. xbox One come to me on Black Friday

Wait I can get my buddy's copy of NHL 15 and download it on my system and then just give it back to him and he should be able to do the same?

WORKS WITH DISKS!!!!!???????

In the sense that it will download the digital version of the game (if there is one) and run that, the disc is just for verification.

If there isn't a digital version of the game (or a publisher doesn't release a patch for said game), then the game won't work.

For me the big deal isn't so much access to my physical games, but the DLC that is locked to 360 hardware. If companies want to push a digital future, somehow they're going to have to make it possible for content to move forward with each generation. The solution of 'just keep your old system' isn't necessarily practical for many people, my wife for one sure as hell doesn't want 10 systems cluttering up the entertainment centre. Being able to dump my 360,carry over my games and more importantly my intangible content to a One is very much a selling point. Not THE selling point, but certainly a noteworthy bullet-point in my purchasing decision. I'm not a huge fan of digital goods but I'm far more open to it if my content isn't hardware-locked, even if only for a gen or two into the future.

"Publishers need to approve"

That's very bad. Especially considering that some may no longer exist.

Will the region lock be removed?

*if the pubs/devs allow it
**if the pubs/devs still exist
***if the game doesn't have licensing issues

Yeah, we'll have to see how this plays out. I was kinda hoping for a PSTV-like 360 mini digital device since all my games are digital. At least that would have saved me space and I wouldn't lose anything.

It's nice, but probably won't be packing up my 360 any time soon.

No, you still need the disc in the drive for verification (similar to how you couldn't install a 360 game to the HDD and give it to a friend)

You know how many PS3s they would have sold without any backward compatibility?

I'm absolutely sure it would have sold even worse.

That's sweet now Sony better respond with at least ps1/ps2 compatibility

they won't , they have psnow and are probably more into developing new games... noone should sell their ps3 anyway for media streaming...

however not saying it wouldn't be cool, just I don't care.

My totally unbiased thoughts as an owner of both a PS4 and XB1. Totally awesome that Microsoft added BC for free. There is no reason anyone should complain about gamers getting more features for free and this type of competition is good for everyone.

Word of caution to those who at this point are using this as a major factor in your future gaming purchases. There hardly any confirmed games that are BC at this point. I'm sure we'll get more info in the near future, but there is no way to know of the games that you'd like to play from the 360 will ever be compatible with the XB1. Would hate to see people get burned thinking that they can play their whole 360 library on XB1 now only to learn they can't after spending their hard earned money.

Don't belittle him for being a junior, he's right. It might be an awesome feature, but it isn't a game changer.

You're right - that was out of turn. My apologies.

People will obviously be hyperbolic about everything coming out of E3 this week - it's not a game changer, but it is extremely important. People value older games, even from recent consoles like the 360.

how is it "important"? its a neat thing for people who believe that once something new comes out it negates the previous.

My 360 is still hooked up. its a cool choice to have it on the One. choices are nice, but its not mind blowing.

Space for families who want just one thing hooked up. That tends to be the selling point for most people I know, and having it on the One will make even older games worth even more.

This just moved the XB1 from no interest to maybe buy some day for me now. It will depend how well this pans out for supported games.

Still, a good step in the right direction.

Whoooohhoooo this was the biggest surprise for me.

+No need to rebuy the games I already own is massive
+No added internet latency
+No compression
+Native BC
