Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Why are all of these publications saying this is true, 100% backwards compatibility? There's less than 100 games ...

Because they need publisher approval. Microsoft doesn't have the rights to distribute games they don't own, they need the publisher to give them permission to enable it.

I thought this was a megaton at first but I have issues with the details.

First of all this seems like the same thing as Original Xbox games on the 360 in that you have to wait for MS to convert the game you want.

Games are not actually running from a disc, you use the disc to acquire the licence to download a converted version. It seems like the disc is no longer used after that beyond authentication.

MS's history with converting games to work on 360 was pretty poor and they gave up after a while.

Better this than nothing ;)

Publishers needing to approve is BS.

However, this is a solid megaton for the hardcore audience like us. It will help a lot of X360 owners still unsure about upgrading to PS4 vs. Xbox One lean XB1 if they care about their old stashes.

Nicely done.

OR it it'll coax die hard PS4 owners and former 360 owners, to buy a bone

it always interests me when people feel compelled to provide a qualifier. Like, just say what you have to say.
I didnt really specify any platforms now did I? No need to get salty.
I merely expressed my astonishment towards this move despite not particuparly liking their moves since XBone.
Nobody gives a shit what platforms you like.
Obviously you do in some way, otherwise my post wouldn't make you comment.

Great news, if they can get other publishers on board and make the list grow.

So with the Xbone and Wii U having Backwards compatibility all that is left is Sony to catch up.

Didnt they do the exact same thing for Xbox 360 with bc for xbox1 games.
You had to download the game to be able to play it. but the whole thing was abandoned pretty quick i think.

The 360 one was a mess.

This is being misclassified as true BC in a lot of places, when it is actually just like 360 where they have to be individually accepted for BC

If it really is a matter of devs opting-in and doesn't take work on their part, maybe the games will be supported.

But yeah, I'm curious if they'll be any laggier. I'll do tests if that day comes.

Yeah but you apparently NEED to ask for said game, "nobody" will ask for those games compared to hundreds of other mainstream games.
(also I'm not ever ordering a jp xbone. (if disc ps1-ps2 on ps3 is any indication))

Nicely done. Hopefully there are no smoke and mirrors involved and it works as advertised.

The "you can trade but you can't"....routine.

I agree, but do you honestly think that rockstar would allow them to use Red dead redemption for example, or any capcom game for that matter?

I think Capcom is banking on remakes and Hd ports, I don't see this happening anytime soon?

I always find the reactions to backwards compatibility strange. It's a nice thing to have, but is it really that big of a deal? I mean I suppose if you have an Xbox One you can get rid of your 360 now, but it's not going to fetch much money and consoles don't take up that much space. *shrug*
It's great for me since I only have the new consoles in the living room. WiiU has been king at my place during the slow release periods because of BC, with 100 VC games and 50 or so retail games I never felt I didn't have anything to play. The list of supported games on XB1 could definitely be bigger though but I assume it'll grow so I'm not really worried, and plenty of games I like are there already so this is awesome.

It's not just like 360; 360 BC required recoding in many places as they didn't have the entire API.

This one is pub approval only.

sure, I can play it, then after im done I can give it to my friend.

Publishers will have a problme with this I reckon

Of course you can give it to your friend after you're done... Like every disc game in every console ever, current gen included.

Does this need any effort from game developers no?

If yes, then why would they code it for free just for BC? Unless MS is paying for it.

Before getting my hopes up I want to know more. I wonder if this includes my kid's kinect games. I would love to put finally put away the 360 and run everything off one box. I guess we'll find out soon.

I cant think of a single game from my old 360 that i would want to play over new games or even remasters...

Honestly?!

I don't believe you've thought about this enough, either that or you had a really small collection.

Give me Geometry Wars RE2 compatibility and I'll buy the console tomorrow.

Edit: Also, best version of Red Dead Redemption. Come on, man.

According to Phil Spencer it requires no effort on developers parts. All MS needs is their permission to enable BC for their games.

Major says a lot of things.
It was also said on stage.
Please support Red Dead Redemption, Please Please Please
Oh. My. God.

That's great, and already confirmed it for the only games I care about (rareware).

If only sony could do the same, or at least for PS1 and PS2.

The games on the list seem to be not very graphically intense games, might be a limit of their emulation

They showed mass effect running on it. The initial list may be small or suck, but it's just that, an initial list. They even said 100+ titles by the holidays.

The initial list is...not good. I hope third parties get behind it but with the number of remasters being shat out these days, it seems doubtful.

BC is worthless unless we are talking near complete compatibility with faithful/improved performance. When you can play Red Dead Redemption, Mirror's Edge, New Vegas etc then it will be a great feature. Will Microsoft even put Gears and Halo on there when they can sell you the remasters instead?

I imagine this works with the Games with Gold titles as well so long as they're games which are supported? I have a few games on that list which I got on Games with Gold so hopefully games obtained through that method are not left out.

If it can support Red Dead and Splinter Cell I'll be happy. Did they say when its going active for preview members?

It's a nice thought but none of the games I was hoping for are on this list. Fallout games, Dead Space games, Mass Effect Trilogy, Batman games, Gears series, Halo series, Fable series, Lost Odysee, Blue Dragon, Oblivion, Skyrim. Fingers crossed I guess.

Aw, seeing the small initial compatibility list is a let-down. But *very* pleased that XBLA games are amongst it (they made up the majority of my 360 library by far). Hopefully Radiant Silvergun, Super Turbo HD Remix, VF5 Final Showdown, etc can live on through future gens too.

Sweet. I hope this spurs some kind of response from the competition.

I wonder if it would be possible for PSNow to include a system that detects the disc in the tray, and allows for free over-the-network play at that point? Wonder if (if possible) that BC move could push Sony to do that?

Great move by MS but lets see how it works as this is really hard work in software to support the BC in different architecture. I think sony may add PS1/PS2 compatibility to PS4 with enhancements to counter as we already have rumor on this a long time ago. Lets see what sony does related to System software later today.

Sad list of BC games
People need to understand this is only for preview right now to test things out with it. The list will probably continue to update with new games and by the time this rolls out for everyone the selection of games will probably be way bigger.

I have a hard time believing this is not a cloud service regardless of what was said. I don't think the Xbox One has the technical ability to emulate a PowerPC chip and the GPU at full speed.
