"If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards," said Mattrick, president of Microsoft's Xbox division.

Speaking to The Verge, Microsoft Xbox Live vice president Marc Whitten said that the architecture between the two machines is too different to allow for backwards compatibility. "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective," he said.
quite funny honestly :-D

I'm interested in this, especially if they do arcade games, and I don't have a 360.

Then you don't have any old 360 games to play to play so what is the point? The only thing I can think of that could interest you is that since you haven't bought a 360 yet, you somehow want to play 360 games now more than you did all of last gen.

Sure makes me glad I sold my 360 last month. AND KEPT MY COPY OF LOST ODYSSEY LIKE A GDAMN GENIUS OMG I FORGOT I DID THAT!!!!!

It's really cool of them to do this, a bit late but still one of those leg up things. Love that they were the ones able to take a shot at Sony for once and say "we wont make you pay for it again." A lot of the games on demand or w/e its called for sony has been kinda off putting personally.

That is not going to be a common occurrence. Very few people would sell the console while keeping the games for that console. Like I said, this is a nice-to-have feature. There is no doubt about that. But a lot of the reactions I'm seeing about this being the best announcement of the conference, or that it's a shot across the bow to Sony simply doesn't make sense. As was pointed out by someone else earlier in the thread, Sony had backward compatibility last gen and valued it so little that they removed it. It's simply not a feature that is going to move consoles.

Hopefully it's actually good. The approach has similarities to oXbox BC on 360, and that was pretty weak, even for the titles that are supported.

Assuming that most of the games are available for BC, I'll just buy an XB1 when my 360 finally dies. This is really nice and gives me another reason to get an XB1 outside of Crackdown,

Hell, Nintendo has had BC all gen coming off of one of the best selling consoles of all time (and their highest selling non-handheld) and look at how much it helped them.

The list of currently available BC games has not even one game I don't own. It makes me realize how many games I own for 360 and how important this feature is to me.

Available games
Banjo Kazooie: N n B
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
BattleBlock Theater
Defense Grid
Geometry Wars Evolved
Hexic HD
Jetpac Refuelled
Kameo
Mass Effect
Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark Zero
Small Arms
Super Meat Boy
Toy Soldiers
Toy Soldiers: Cold War
Viva Piñata
Viva Piñata: TIP

This was the biggest surprise of the show which also got a huge response (loudest?) from the crowd. Having said that it's not such a big incentive for me personally but I can see it being huge for those who still have a sizeable 360 collection.

Hopefully this means the 360 is dead and Microsoft can move on.

This is an incredible feature if it works well/solid performance. Excited to try Read Dead Redemption, Microsoft software engineering is awesome.

I thought this was a megaton at first but I have issues with the details.

First of all this seems like the same thing as Original Xbox games on the 360 in that you have to wait for MS to convert the game you want.

Games are not actually running from a disc, you use the disc to acquire the licence to download a converted version. It seems like the disc is no longer used after that beyond authentication.

MS's history with converting games to work on 360 was pretty poor and they gave up after a while.

Publishers needing to approve is BS.

However, this is a solid megaton for the hardcore audience like us. It will help a lot of X360 owners still unsure about upgrading to PS4 vs. Xbox One lean XB1 if they care about their old stashes.

Nicely done. Hopefully there are no smoke and mirrors involved and it works as advertised.

The "you can trade but you can't"....routine.

It's definitely not full scale. Basically gonna be all the popular titles I assume.

I think he said "all your digitally purchased games will be available and won't need to be repurchased".

Could be semantics, but it sure seems like they're trying to support all of them, although if it's individually-done then that would be a big hill to climb.

Didnt they do the exact same thing for Xbox 360 with bc for xbox1 games.
You had to download the game to be able to play it. but the whole thing was abandoned pretty quick i think.

The BC thing is a smart move. I am sure their data shows a lot of people that have yet to jump in to current gen from the 360. Now the BB trade in deal ala Gamestop to help persuade those to jump in.

(Though they should have waited a little for at least games to actually be on it first, then again, the deal screams a move that they probably felt helped with the April NPD)

I would love to revisit this BC a year from now, since most devs may not be bothered to even do a thing about it for those who can run out and buy $14 used games they see zero revenue from.

So if I bought Perfect Dark HD on 360 (digital only), will that work on Xbone when the backwards compatibility comes out? That's pretty awesome if true.

If they made UMVC3 available...oh man. That would tempt me but this is Capcom after all so I'm not holding my breath.
