Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Great stuff.
I was thinking of re-buying a PS4 now that there are some interesting games coming out but I think this just sold me on Xbox One. I have a huge back catalogue of 360 games.

BC was the last thing I thought that they would announce. Kudos, MS. I look forward to playing Red Dead Redemption for the 7th time but now with an XB1 controller.

It's not recompiled. There's an IGN interview on how it works. It is emulation.

I went for an interview with the people who created the emulation. It's CPU emulation of PowerPC, in a Hyper-V container with Xbox OS installed inside.

But for real, I'm super excited about this

I generally sell off old physical copies of games at the end of a gen, but I'd gladly rebuy them as digital, officially emulated copies that play on current hardware. I'm a big purchaser of PSN Classics and Virtual Console games, and can see myself taking real advantage of X360 games on XBO

Amazing stuff this. I've got some questions.

1. It's up to the publisher ? Hope everyone allows this. What will happen to the original GeOWr now ? Will Microsoft Studios allow it to be emulated after August ?

2. Also, since we're emulating the X360 (if it's sw), can we do "emulateception" AKA emulate the X360's PowerPC as a whole which in turn emulates the original Xbox games like Ninja Gaiden / Ninja Gaiden Black ?

3. How about legacy peripherals, fightsticks and wheels ? If they're compatible now, do they mean they'll eventually be compatible with native X1 games as well ?

They are converting the game to the Xbox One so they need to get the nod of the original devs. The BC has nothing to do with OG Xbox because Xbox 360 plays OG Xbox titles on software emulation and is fairly limited. It doesn't have anything to do with peripherals either.

Now XBL seems to be back up fully I just seen Perfect Dark in my Ready to install section of my games and apps. Downloading now. Just a heads up.

Installed Mass Effect. Played. Looks good. Funny thing still some texture pop ins but much much less than in the original. Its the same game with the same resolution as on the 360 but the quality is a little bit better maybe because the Xbox One has a better scaling solution. In short: It works, no problems so far being 1hr in the game!

Great to hear.

If it's digital it's under Games and Apps - Ready to download (far right).

Note XBLive is having severe stability issues right now and titles aren't populating.

Thank you. This is exactly what I wanted to know.

Nothing is populated for me right now. I'll check back after the Sony conference.

How do you get XBLA games?

Same as you get them on the 360. Once they're on your account, you download them. One the One they show up just like any other digital game for the One.

+1 Can you buy Xbox 360 on Xbox One now?

It's only for preview (beta) members. There is no 360 store on XB1 yet. There's only a few titles supported right now.

If you don't own a 360 you can buy XBLA games via the web.

My titles just popped, 4 digital games.

Banjo Kazooie, Zuma, Jet Pac, and Toy Soldiers: cold war.

I might cave and buy N&B or one of the Piñata games, which is the better one?

Tried out Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise and it worked very well. Like the fact that you get the box art in your games section, can pin the games to your home and it has a custom splash screen on the game screen also.

PD isn't there for me. Mass Effect (disc) worked fine though. Actually non of my digital stuff is there, not even my Xbox One games lol.

just listening to Xbox@E3 and they ran through the BC stuff. Seems to be running games in a virtual 360 under a software emulator. So in theory it sounds like new games could be added quickly. And they committed to releasing all first party games where possible (sounds like licensing might be an issue for some games)

That is a bit surprising for me. Although the 360 was DX based and had a PC style GPU, it was Nvidia Vs AMD on XB1, and also the CPU was PPC based, not x86. Given the relative weakness of the current gen CPUs, I wonder if they're recompiling anything?

So according to the video segment they just streamed, some games may be not be available due to expired licenses. So yeah. Bummer.

Banjo-Kazooie downloaded nice and quick, installed and booted with no issues. Snap works, but it doesn't go automatically to the achievements for the game when I open the app. Can't seem to bring up the trophies for B-K in snap at all, have to go full screen.

So stuff like Marvel vs Capcom is never going to get approval because of licensing issues, right?

WHAHTHHAHTHA
This is already working?

As for the emulator itself. It makes sense that some games just won't be possible with the legal IP stuff. But I like how the guy basically said if it doesn't have weird USB certs, IP certs it will work. Thats awesome.

God damnit it won't work for me, I'm a preview member and I went toy ready to install section and nothing, not even stuff I've deleted, banjo should be on there for me but it's just directing me to go to the store.
