Shenmue is a big reason why I ever got interested in anything Japanese. This has been a part of my while e adult life and to see it announced like it was brings a literal tear to my eye.

I've been stuck at this screen for over 10 years. I had to import this game from the UK when it launched because Sega America wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I preorderd it on the original Xbox with hopes a third game would come. Many E3s have passed and many Shenmue fans dreams have been repeatedly crushed by false rumors and fan petitons.

Well that's all over now that the kickstarter arrived. Shenmue fans are dedicated and I am one of them. I want to get off this decade long cliffhanger. I'll have to buy a PS4 now just to have all the versions. I need a physical copy! This game will be mine and I will avenge my father!

Dude, that's not the end! Put in that fourth disk. :P

I'm in a camp where I want to fund this. I want this game. But I've never played the other 2. I'm sure the chance of a remaster is high, but still. Idk.

I wonder if they get like 6 million or something, they'll do a Shenmue 1+2 remaster or at least a re-release for those of us who haven't had the chance to play it.

You know what's so beautiful about that Huber reaction, you rarely see that kind of emotion and excitement from other people in the industry. People like Huber and Bosman are just refreshing.

What a wonderful evening.

Ever since Gametrailers put Kyle Bosman with his own show, I knew we were in for a nice ride, then Mandatory Update came, then Huber Hype, and I knew I had found my favorite game journalism people.

This was just the culmination. I think I felt happier for Huber than I did with the announcement. He's been talking about Shenmue and streaming the first two games for years haha.

All right GAF as a backer who has never played the other two games what are my chances on catching up?

Has anybody compiled the story of the other games into a mega cutscene? Should I watch a walkthrough?

Or should I wait and hope that ports/remakes are coming?

First time my body wasn't ready. Suddenly I shat my pants totally out of control.
Someone wake me up. FF7 remake and now THIS.

Fuck me, now my life is complete! Suzuki getting all the money thrown at his Kickstarter which I have!!

Sony funds new games left and right without knowing if they're gonna do well or not. It's frigging ShenMue and Yu is asking for 2 mil. Really? Did it need a KS campaign?

Call me old fashioned but I feel kinda cheated. Sonys asking for my money to brag about an exclusive game down the road.. Nah.

2 million is pocket change and I'm sure ShenMue would recover that on launch day. At 30 bucks That's less than 100.000 copies. I'm sure ShenMue would move that number of copies.

I already suspect Sony is putting some money in it already, because 3 mill is definitely not a full production cost number.

Absolutely agreed.

Sorry for the dumbass question but I've never messed with these.

If I really just want a physical PS4 copy, should I just not back it? Then if they go on to sell physical copies I can buy one in-store or just buy the digital version when it is released?

I wouldn't mind backing it, but I don't want to preorder a digital version then have them release a physical one later.

I would love to know the ins and outs of Sega's involvement in all this. Their copyright is on the Kickstarter video but I get the feeling they are kind of reluctantly agreeing to this.

One day, probably in a distant future the real story will come out over why this has taken 14 years. But let's make sure Ryo has his revenge first :-)

Or should I wait and hope that ports/remakes are coming?

I would wait. The probability of ports is higher than ever. Apparently, they already made them but had problems with software licenses for some middleware in the game. I am sure that they'll figure that out now.

From other thread:

I'm a little confused in regards to the development of Shenmue 3.

Isn't $2 million low for such a game, or is it very much like the Bloodstained kickstarter?
Reach a certain goal and the remaining will be funded by its publisher?

In this case, who is the publisher, Sony, Sega? I mean, the details are quite limited.

I have a feeling this is going to slow down really quickly, what with the awkward pledge tiers.

Nothing between $500 and $10,000? This isn't Apple Watch :-p

Is Sony somehow involved? Like how investors needed to see interest in bloodstained before supporting it, is it the same case here?

Anyway first kickstarter I supported.

Definitely going to go down as one of the legendary ones, yep

I'm still half and half on the idea that the world ended today.

TLG, FFVII remake, and Shenmue 3.

There games that were never going to happen. Are.

Half-Life 3, and something Mother related and I hate to tell you. We all dead.
