Come on man, you think the public is stupid, they're not that stupid.

If they can set up a PS4, they can set up a PC.

Ok, let me put this in a way you might understand how disconnected casual people
are. So most people that don't frequent gaming sites know what a PS4 is, some will know what an xbox is (I live in Europe), most of them have no clue what Steam is, maybe they heard the name before, but they didn't care enough. Now when those people go to pick up something to play their annual games like Fifa or Assassin's Creed or some dumb thing that appeared on TV with a gigantic Playstation logo on the commercial, what Steam box do you think they'll choose?

Not wanting to is fine, but saying that it's a much more difficult endeavor is laughable, this isn't the 90's anymore, and in the 90's the teen in me built one so people really have no leg to stand on when they act like you need a degree to build one.

The barrier is there not because it's difficult, but because people don't want to spend the extra time/money. They aren't "hardcore" enough. Just like there are "hardcore" car guys who think that you are a fool for taking your car into the shop when a lot of stuff you can do yourself but that doesn't mean Oil Change businesses are going to go belly up any time soon.

Go ride the hype train elsewhere if it's so important to you.

wait, how serious does giantbomb take posts on neogaf?

I mean, they pretty clearly are. As much as they joke around Gerstmann also breaks down the industry just as much, if not more than anyone else in the industry.

They have news stories, videos, opinion pieces, pretty much everything every other video game journalism site has. The only thing they lack in is reviews, because of their small staff. And if anything, the reviews they do have are some of the most reliable because they don't rush them out the door to make sure their website can get a bunch of clicks on the games release day.

If they weren't concerned about the journalism aspect of the site, they wouldn't have hired Patrick or Austin.

as far as i could tell patrick was the lifeblood of any sort of journalism on that site, then it took a dive when he left. obviously with austin and his background we'll see a bit more pieces that are less news focused and more opinion based. otherwise i didn't really see any others contribute all that much.

I felt the after-conference comments were a refreshing dose of realism to counteract the constant positivity that had been thrown out for the past two hours. Because ultimately, it helps to craft a more complete analysis.

Let's be honest, if you're going to spend the next few days chatting about TLG - nobody is going to bring up the fact that the visuals haven't aged all that well, and that the gameplay looks pretty standard. No, it's going to be cult-like gushing. Same with just about every other reveal shown off tonight. When its' positive, it's loudly positive. When its' negative, it's deafeningly negative. So if you want to counteract that, you need some people who are going to come at events from a level-headed, experienced perspective. That's what Giant Bomb offers.

A few of the comments were a little overly harsh though. Alex saying that Playstation answering so many fan requests was a reason to be concerned, needed a little more explanation. (You can see it as a company apologizing for a weak lineup, or you can see it as a company using success to make passion projects come to life). I also wasn't on board with the consensus that FF7 Remake is a fruitless endeavour.

Overall, it comes off as people who refuse to believe until they see something in person. In other words, people who have been burned by this shit before.
Great post. Their show was a room full of dudes who have literally seen it all, many times over and were giving their initial knee-jerk opinions and trying to make it funny and entertaining at the same time.

The 'Sony has no games' people are forgetting about Blops3, Battlefront and Fallout 4.

Those people are talking about exclusives, and you know that. Because the point of comparison between machines is to eliminate titles that appear on both, and thus serve as a null point. Yes, the PS4 has Battlefront. So will the XBox, thus its' not really relevant to the conversation of which has a better lineup - or which is a more appealing purchase.

Also consider the point that all of them have gaming PCs, which are typically the best place to play multiplatform stuff. When Austin said that he didn't have a reason to turn on his PS4 that Fall, that's a legitimate point. If he's not into the subset games that will only appear on that platform - its' not going to see much use.

you are beyond delusional if you think building a pc is as easy as opening a box and plugging in a system.

Building a PC? No.

Buying one? Yes.

But building a PC is still insanely easy, I'm blown away that it's 2015, technology is so ingrained into our culture, and people still believe that building one is a feat, that's how you can tell they never truly built a PC in the first place and just parrot what they hear other people who never built one either yell.

let me tell you witcher 3 looks fucking AMAZING on my 800 box

i do agree though, amongst casuals, steam and pcs generally will get no traction

Even though they aren't exclusive those games help Sony have an appealing lineup because of the work they put in 2 years ago. Sony got off to a white hot start and built up a ton of good will and word of mouth and people went out and bought PS4s in droves. MS got off to a dumpster fire of a start, with terrible word of mouth and nothing but bad will (which they are slowly turning back). So now people who haven't made their console purchasing decisions want to play stuff like CoD and Battlefront and are going to do it on the console that their friends or family or co-workers all own. It's a snowball effect.

I completely agree as to why people don't, I'm just arguing that having or building a PC is a lot simpler than people assume.

It is easy I agree, but that still is a huge barrier to entry for most people. Also you and I know that pre-built is not the way to go if you want to get the most bang for your buck. Buying a PC has other problems along with it (bloatware, shitty graphics cards for the price you are paying, etc). These people buying 500-600$ pc's that are better or comparable to a ps4/xbox one are not buying pre-built machines.

Also working at best buy in the past has really shown me how ignorant people are of computers, just work there for a day and you would probably go mad at how ignorant people really are. People today care about one thing: convience.

Not really – Giantbomb doesn't have that counter-culture , you see this in the podcast even though on rare occasions they disagree with Dan over MGS. Then again, when you have just Dan with Jeff and Brad who talk a lot and Drew who contributes nothing, then it's going to be that way.
Eh, ive been listening to them for 7 years now, they've disagreed with one another plenty of times.

Those GOTY podcasts become brutal at times.

Because their main avenues are the podcast and Quick Looks. The video aspects are mainly the entertainment and the news section and "What have you been playing?" sections of the podcast are the part where they break down the video game industry and the games themselves. Not to mention videos like Jeff's Jar series and the Encyclopedia Bombastica stuff that are full of information about video game history and the current industry. They post news stories all of the time. The front page of the site is littered with them right now. Journalism isn't limited to opinion pieces like Austin and Patrick do.

What the hell? I leave figuring there's been nothing big, may as well go out and enjoy myself, the press conference will be there when I get back.

And I get text messages all over the place basically saying that Sony had a conference with the theme of "ARE YOU FUCKING HAPPY YET, INTERNET!?"

I agree, and I assume when GB talks about future prospects, they're talking about those who would have the energy to build a PC.

Or they're just talking purely for themselves and this is all moot lol.

So, it seems like it was a good thing I was at the theater and not watching the Sony conference with Giant Bomb because they were all a bunch of jaded mother fuckers, right? Ugh. I'm really getting tired of this shit on GB.
Nope. I just watched it and enjoyed it a lot. I liked hearing their thoughts and thought they did a good job of balancing talking and letting the press conferences play through. I might get more or less excited about certain things than them, but I don't consider them jaded at all. The overhype reactions are fun to laugh at and read on GAF, but I wouldn't want to watch a video of that at all. I guess I don't need to see people losing their shit to hype myself. I think just hanging out and watching stuff having a conversation and discussing the good and the bad things are what makes GB fun to watch. I don't know, I just really hate seeing the "jaded" thing thrown around because it just feels like just a word people throw out when they are pissed someone is not riding the hype train and going crazy.

I totally agree. Right now, Sony has all of the momentum (especially after this show), and a growing network effect that gives them a substantial advantage over Microsoft in some key areas. However, you're fooling yourself if you think that they wanted to be in a situation where two consecutive holiday seasons went by without shipping any major AAA exclusives. Something happened behind the scenes to cause 2014 and 2015's lineups, and that's something Sony should be held accountable for. They're clearly fixing it so that it will not happen again - and that's great - but it should not have happened in the first place.

How are you going to hold them accountable? By not buying games that aren't for sale? Not buying a system you own? Not buying 2016 releases you want? I guess you could trade in your PS4 for another console. Maybe even a PC.

I think they are probably reshuffling a lot of stuff financially behind the scenes. They were not in a good place (and in a lot of ways still aren't) as a company. I think the success of the PS4 is probably buying them a lot of time though. If the PS4 was struggling a bit more, or if Worldwide userbase between MS and Sony were closer, maybe they'd pony up extra $$$ to get turn a third party game into a Fall exclusive, or maybe they'd rush out UC4. It's hard to say how they would be behaving, but I do feel they have bought themselves some rope and they are probably right.

Hell you'd think they would be happy for a friend of their (Adam Boyes) delivering one of the craziest E3 moment of all time but I guess that's too much too.

So they can get wasted with the guy when he was with capcom and they were playing that pirate game and put it all on video on their site but it's too unprofessional to be happy for him on a livestream?

how is the Witcher 3 on your machine?

you are beyond delusional if you think building a pc is as easy as opening a box and plugging in a system.

I know plenty of people who only buy madden, or COD. That is it.

What are you running then? and what are your settings?

No magical pixie dust. I know a 500-600$ pc can be better or comparable to a ps4/xbox one. But people ignore the part where you have to build it and then troubleshoot if anything were to go wrong. Many PC gamers seem to think Pc's just work today, which they do not and never have. Things can and will happen on PC that just do not happen on console. Consoles are easier to deal with and due to their inherent nature will always be.

building a PC looks intimidating. it is not. you open up a youtube video, and you follow along. you plug the thing into the thing it's designed to be plugged into.

The particular conversation you're involved in is regarding the informed video game consumer. In my view, the "informed consumer" we're talking about is not the person who just buys assassin's creed and FIFA and pops em in the disk tray. Yes, that person is better served by a console, since the value prop of a console is essentially just convenience.

However, the marketing strategies of the two competitive companies would not have you believe this fact. due to their clash with each other, they're forced to proclaim their console as THE BEST AND ONLY WANT TO EXPERIENCE V I D E O G A M E S, which isn't true, and anyone who pays a modicum of attention to the industry beyond the big triple As is aware of it.

Persona 5 and Tales of Zestiria (PC too) are still coming this year supposedly.

Dragon Quest Heroes. This argument posited by the supposed 'on point and objective' GiantBomb crew actually sounds eerily similar to the goalpost-moving fanboy bickering as to what qualifies as an exclusive.

No. You just revealed yourself as a hardcore fanboy though.

eh, boyes' jokes fell flat this year. his performance last year was way better. That said, I can't wait to get him on the nightcast and have them ask him what was going through his mind when he stuck his hand up to do the final fantasy chibi announcement and then follow it up with the remake

Me either. So what?

so that's fine, duh

You'd think that not mixing personal with professional is a good thing.

Also that they have received criticism in the past for mixing those 2 things.
