Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

witcher 3 was more or less like that too. like technically velen and novigrad were the same region, no loading necessary. skellige tho was a different story.

huge ass 'mini' worlds though, i'd be more than satisfied with those sizes in this game. even bigger would be awesome

Yeah, that would be best. I'm imaging a future where we can say, walk or ride from White Orchard to Velen, then walk right into Novigrad. I'm sure that future is at least another generation away, but a guy can dream, can't he?

After all, Shenmue 3 and FFVII Remake were once the fevered dreams of madmen.

i don't get it, looks pretty lame to me. why would robots who have taken over resemble giant robots and stuff? doesn't make sense.

There's a book by Alastair Reynolds called 'On The Steel Breeze' where Mars has been overrun by intelligent machines that can redesign themselves, and one of the ones featured in the book looks like a dinosaur.

Fuck me, these posts and the astonishing lack of imagination and 'Well that's a bit weird, how would that work? Why would they do that? I'm scared of the new and novel.'

Dinosaur designs for mechs actually makes sense to me. Assuming the tech is there isn't something with legs more functional than something with wheels/treads?

I wonder if the game still has organic animals

There were fish in the trailer, so I'd assume there are more.

Very interested to see/hear/read any sort of DEEP TECH talk about what their graphics engine is doing. Its most likely same engine they used for Killzone right?

Saw it in the stream earlier today but the quality was pretty shit. OMG this looks absolutely amazing! The foliage and destruction were what really stood out to me. The way the rock breaks apart into smaller rocks when hit with the missle and the way the fucking Rex-9000's armor broke apart revealing weak points looks insane. If this really is an open world game it's incredibly impressive.

Wait. So, you're upset that people want to know more information about a game based on a trailer? ...what do you people think trailers are for, exactly? Seriously, some of you are being just absolutely ridiculous right now.

the art makes me feel like this setting is hundreds of years after killzone. would be cool if there was a connection

Personally I love it when scifi takes a setting that does not seem to make any sense, like let's say a post apocalyptic Earth(?) with robot dinosaurs, and then goes on to explain everything in a way it all makes sense in the end. This is what I am waiting (and hoping) for Horizon to do.

Getting all worked up because one trailer does no explain everything is so...how would I say this...NeoGaf of you all.

Looked really good, but need to know more about the game. It has RPG elements yeah? Was also expecting to see some co op hunting (with the whole tribe angle) and jumping onto and climbing beasts. Is any of that in?

Also VO was a bit excessive. A like a little insight into a character but not constant. Could have just been for the reveal though.

lol yeh why don't GG just spill the beans and tell the whole story?

Just recapped Sony and mygod this is really impressive. I love everything about it. The setting, the look, the characters. Interested in seeing more of those RPG elements, hopefully it's all meaningful.

Sci Fi itself(unless you are going the Star Wars route which is really fantasy) is almost always based around using future scenarios to commentate on present societal or individual issues(which this game hints at heavily in this trailer). So the ability to logically link to the possibility of the future dystopia or downfall is much more paramount then a fantasy where you are going in completely ignoring any such links. With that said....

For one you are dealing with robots which signal a human creator. So you begin to unpack the logic of why exactly human beings or an AI created by humans is building giant dinosaurs instead of any number of more functional or purposeful designs and then how or why such creatures managed to inherit the planet and grow into a primary species. Then you compound the game is pretty much asking you to evaluate this world in a serious manner based on its themes, tone and initial world building.

None of which I would even care about if the game didn't take itself so seriously or hint at a logical connection between their world and the present world.

Dragons are not real but they are established as an evolved creature like any other animal in a world that is completely separate from ours.
So you're saying that the game won't establish the dinosaur robots, the key antagonistic force in the game, in the games lore in a way that makes sense. Based on what?

Why does it automatically have to be a joke? Because you don't like thing?

BTW, many scifi topics sound stupid with no context. Maybe you should wait until we have a bit more info than a 6 minute gameplay trailer before writing off the entire idea as bad parody.

Oh I am sure they will try and establish logic for why these things exist. They have clearly set that up already in their rather cliched trailer. That wasn't my argument though.

Or, to put it more adult terms, the trailer got people asking questions. It got people talking about a new IP. People clearly want to know more about the world. These are all reasons why trailers get made. It is a good thing this is happening. Stop trying to make every new game thread into the same tired hype train nonsense. It's not beneficial to anybody.

Despite The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue 3 and all the other crazy awesomeness, this was the best things at the show.

Best looking and looks fun as hell. I hope there's loads of farming, crafting, base building etc. Need a reason to kill all these creatures. I love it though, looks incredible. Oh and co-op please!

So what is? Because I'm not really getting anything beyond what I had responded to in my previous post.

His argument if I remembered it cirrectly, is just the game is looks and set to be in serious tone. Personally I share the same criticism. I hope for more lighter one or at least the characters later will shown some humor in the game.

The gameplay looks amazing, the setting fantastic, the visuals stunning.

But I am just not feeling the robot designs.. I wish they were more organic in nature. I dunno, I just never loved games populated by robots.. even living ones. Plus, it's such a tease- I want to see an actual dinosaur game like this!

Either way, I'm still excited.

Looks real interesting. Hope full game has more exploration mixed with combat vs constant combat but for a reveal that's damn nice.

Good to see what GG can do away from Kilzone too.

I didn't mind her talking to herself. I mean, it seemed a weee bit forced, but meh. For some reason she comes across with more character and verve than Lara. Whether that's due to contextual presentation, better VA, or my simple yet deep and highly biased hatred for the TR reboot. "shrugs" I liked her, and almost don't want to play as her, lol. I want to create a character and have her lead me, train me, etc.

What I liked about the demo was that the mechanics seemed familiar, yet "looked" tight and very functional. There wasn't wasted motion and the player was in control. I hope they don't get toooo cinematic with it. You don't need to; the environment and creatures provide a dramatic frame to the scenes on their own. I felt the dino busting through the tree's could have been a simple in game animation trigger; no cut scene needed to pull you out of the gameplay for those two or three seconds. But whatever.

And I love the contrast of tech and tribal. It's not done a whole lot, but it's pretty striking when done well.

Lets see what we saw gameplay wise. First up:

Stealth element
============

Use of tall grass ala Uncharted 4....similar to TLOU/BAA/Shadow of Mordor mechanics wise.

- Useful for hiding and hunting enemy mechs.

Watcher mechs can spot the player or be attracted to the player if the player makes sudden moves or acts rashly while around them. Watchers will also seemingly alert others.

Combat
======

Three Weapons: Combat Bow, Hunting Spear and a Grappling X-bow or as it's properly titled, ROPECASTER.

Bow:

The bow is the main weapon with multiple arrow types. Arrow shots impact damage can be increased by/while holding aim.

- Explosive Arrows - highly effective for killing blows (Ex: Thunderjaw encounter)

- Electric Arrows - used for circuitry jamming on enemies. In the case of the Thunderjaw encounter it seems to cause enemy disorientation.

- Armor Piercing Arrows - used for immobilizing targets. Ex: grazers body shot AND thunderjaw's legs.

Hunting Spear:

Close encounter weapon. Helpful for killing blows in weak spots.

Ropecaster:

Grappling X-bow for target mobilization (useful for trapping big targets like the Thunderjaw).

Acquired weapons: Disc Launcher - a multiple rocket(disc?) launcher (acquired from Thunderjaw)

Crafting
======

Materials scavenged from mechs are presumed to be used for making arrows - it's an option.

Enemy Mechs
===========

All downed mechs in the demo seem to be "search-able" for materials.

All mechs in the demo seem to have weak spots. Larger targets have multiple weak spots.

Types shown:

Watcher (search dog/raptor) - aggressive, searches in packs. Can be stealth insta-killed.

Grazer (deers. un-aggressive - to be hunted for materials) - gathers in packs, stampedes on player sight.

- Drops Blaze material.

ThunderJaw (T-Rex, aggressive)

_________ (Giant Eagle)

_________ (Giraffe/Brachiosaurus Radar)

Player Mobility
===========

Sliding (allows shooting while in motion)
Vaulting
Strafing (side-to-side movement)

+ running.

Loving everything about the combat, its depth, fluidity and there so much more to learn yet.

Amazing trailer. Outstanding demo! Out of this world graphics. Hold me gaf.

I thought it was just going to be a full cgi trailer, then it transitioned to gameplay and my jaw dropped. day one whenever it is.

So refreshing to see a setting like this. Sure it has elements of other fictional worlds, but it still feels incredibly unique, especially compared to the settings we usually get in open world rpgs.

The world design looks like a lot of the high fantasy stuff from the 60's-90's, which has me extremely excited.

It's surprising that open world games have largely missed the epic, sprawling expanses that are relatively common to the genre, but I suppose that has bee limited by technology.
