I don't think they blew it... I think many people had expectations that were way too high. You could see this coming a mile away.
I completely agree. Especially on the Metroid front. Way too many expectations, like dark and gritty Metroid Dread and Retro making Prime 4.

Man, I haven't seen this much Nintendo hate since the Wii U launch. I almost wonder if another emergency direct a la January 2013 could happen out of it.

Nintendo is setting themselves up so that they don't have to make an emergency direct for the NX shortly after release.

[岩田]深夜まで、ご覧いただきありがとうございました。今年のDigital Eventに対する様々なご意見を真摯に受け止め、今後、より多くのみなさまのご期待にお応えできるように努めていきたいと思います。#Iwatter

It seems Iwata and Nintendo saw the negative reaction to the Digital Event.

Iwata seems to understand that the Digital Event didn't meet expectations and they'll work hard to better meet people's expectations.

So Star Fox looks amazing, Super Mario Maker looks amazing, Zelda looks amazing, new Fire Emblem, SMT x FE, Xenoblade X gets a release date...

I don't understand the hate. Just because new Zelda U is still a ways away?

After the NWC they shouldn't have spent any time on Mario Maker
Fire Emblem looks like shit.
SMT x FE looks like shit.
Xenoblade seems to be mediocre based on impressions from Japan.
Another insult to Paper Mario
The death of Metroid
The Wii U AC game is a fucking amiibo board game

Zelda, Star Fox, and Yoshi look good.

Am I the only one that thinks Iwata is going to burn Nintendo down to the ground?

He just comes across as very stubborn, very cheap (always opting for outdated hardware and a generation behind the competition) and borderline delusional/in denial about Nintendo's vulnerable position.

There's the saying - you need to spend money to make money. Iwata really seems like the kind of guy who goes completely against that philosophy and wants to spend as little as possible - and yet expect grand returns for Nintendo.

Supposedly Nintendo have 10 billion in cash....well start spending it and do something to save the company.

IWATA NEEDS TO GO!!!!

Well, something needs to change. I just don't think releasing a mid-gen console is the answer. That's more like a dying breath.

Very surprised that none of those 3DS titles were exclusive to the New 3DS, or were they?

It was a very lackluster showing, clearer e3 isn't a focus for Nintendo but that's fine we'll get bigger announcements at other shows.

But some of this was clearly filler, well compared to the approach they take compared to Microsoft and Sony its very Nintendo.

The puppets were the best part of the conference for me, the dancing ones in particular were hilarious.

Somebody get a gif of that Camera man O face!

Know what's kind of funny, if you told someone the following:

"Nintendo would show a Mario, a Zelda, a Star Fox, a Metroid, and an Animal Crossing". They would have thought Nintendo absolutely crushed it.

How could they get that so wrong? All the franchises people wanted but none of the games.

They've moved their teams to NX. This is clear.

No one bought a Wii U, so why spend more money on it?

Lots of strange and unrealistic expectations today.

Explains why Iwata didn't buy tickets to E3. Knew their showing was underwhelming and didn't want to bother answering awkward questions by the press.

NX and mobile. I kind of agree with you. For example I think that Animal Crossing board game was originally a full-fledged sequel but then Wii U happened. No reason to waste a proper entry in the series on that system.

I'm fine with Nintendo's upcoming lineup, considering the NX is definitely coming 2016. But the conference itself was very mediocre.

Turok on N64 sold pretty decently.

Ah, forgot about that one. Also, the Super Star Wars & Star Wars Rogue Squadron games too. But my main point still stands (I think): if the 3rd parties offerings were quality releases from Capcom, Konami, and Square Enix, they would sell just fine on Nintendo systems.

I was literally shaking with anger during that conference. Tears formed in my eyes and my fists were clenched. "Announce something," I shrieked at my computer. My mom knocked on my bedroom door and had to ask if I was ok. Then, they started showing me a bunch of losers playing instruments dressed as Mario and I just turned it off. It was actually unbelievable.

Now, I'm 31 years old and this was, without a doubt, the worst conference I've ever seen in my life. It's clear that Nintendo is not just done with the Wii U but done with the company. There is no recovering from a conference that bad. They'll talk about the NX at next E3, but people will ignore it after remembering Blast Balls.

I loved this company and put my heart and soul into dedicating my gaming life to them. But now, I have nothing. I'm an empty shell.

Bruh....

The difference is that a company like Sony spend 90 minutes showing 2016 games, and still not show everything coming to their platform, while still having a holiday 2015 with Fallout 4, Battefront, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six Siege, Uncharted Collection, Disgaea 5, Rock band 4, Fifa 16, Madden 16, Skylanders, Lego, Mad Max, Metal Gear Solid 5, God Of War remaster, and at least a dozen other games.

And that is just retail. Get into downloadable titles and you have another 20-30 games.

The almost complete lack of third party support really leaves Nintendo in a bad position when it comes to promoting their platforms and actually putting new games on shelves.[/b\

That's the reason why they are killing the Wii U right there. Nintendo could've mask this E3 lineup with the same damn games that Sony and Microsoft had just like Sony/Microsoft did the previous 2 years with solid 3rd party support. Then nobody would've blinked an eye to Wii U's last days.

Also, I'll give them last year's Digital Event.
But holy fuck, that idea with the puppets was bad. Basically turned into trolling, once you realized how this was gonna end. :lol Hopefully NX gets a conference, but I think it will. World championship already was much better than the prerec thing today from an entertainment perspective (meaning, excluding the obviously horrid content)

I feel as if Nintendo doesn't care about what gamers want as a whole but what a minor amount of fans care for. I'm hyped for Yoshi and Mario Maker, but that's about it. I understand that this potentially means that devs are moving onto the NX but until they show me the receipts I'm not going to give them the benefit of doubt.

Stop going off into your own little bubble and actually pay attention to what the community as a whole wants.

Yep. People just don't seem to get that for many, game consoles are a "platform" and most of the games they buy are multiplats. I would argue for a lot of people, the majority of the games they buy in a given year, are multiplat. And the reason Sony is doing so well, is the PS4 is THE best Platform to play most of the AAA budget titles, hell, most of the titles released in the industry in general, in a given year. I mean in terms of performance. And when games cost $60, and when people have HDTV's, they want the best bang for their buck. They want the best version of something they are playing.

So people can say Sony doesn't have games all they want (and that is a problem), but they are also kind of missing the point. A lot of people will have a ton of content to play on their PS4 this holiday (it doesn't need to be exclusive to still not be a massive deal. A lot of people are excited as hell about Arkham Knight for instance. Or Fallout 4). And they showed of a lot OMG games that are 2016 (or at least within a decent reach). When you consider all the stuff they showed that wowed + knowing the fact that, most people will be playing a ton of major games on PS4...

As a Nintendo fan, I get that, not everyone likes AAA multiplat titles from the industry. I am not trying to sell Nintendo fans on these other consoles, or other games. I mean, you could think that most AAA games are shit. I get that. Just speaking in general.

I also don't get why people are also obsessed with an E3 conference only being good, if it has content for THIS year. Most of Nintendo's content is this year, and it was still a flat conference with pacing/structure issues. And a lot of what they showed, not a lot wowed.

I woke up late but this is pretty boring so far and I've skipped at least half of the video...Hopefully something happens here in the last six minutes.

Yeah. Nintendo is simply not going to drop 20 million + on a fucking Metroid game on a dying console. That wasn't going to happen. Anyone expecting it has no business sense.

The most fascinating thing here is for me, how after the colossal failure that the Wii U has been, and after this digital event, people here are still looking forward to the NX.

I think, I will never ever buy anything Nintendo again. And I have been a loyal fan up to the Wii.

You people remind me of a beaten housewife coming back for more again and again.

The party is over, people, go home.

The NX won't change that.

It's just a press conference. The Wii U is still a fantastic console.

I'll continue to be a fan as long as they keep making good games. Shitty press conferences be damned.

Conference was underwhelming. Oh well. Excited for the new 3DS Zelda though! Been waiting for another multiplayer Zelda game for ages. Star Fox also looks good, but it's fairly typical Star Fox.

The Wii U is the new Sega Saturn, this is the E3 1997 moment when a Sega executive declared their console dead early.

Digital Event was weird for sure, but fuck it, Platinum Star Fox, that's all I really wanted and that's what I got. The rest of 2015 looks really solid from my perspective: Yoshi's Woolly World, Devil's Third, Project Zero, Xenoblade X and Mario Maker will keep me busy way into 2016. I don't expect SF to hit until 2016, it looks really early in development.

This is the conceit of many in this thread.

But I can understand it; they're thinking like fans, not businesspeople.

I don't understand why they had a separate, earlier stream for the Smash DLC when their main conference was this starved for content.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
[Iwata] until midnight, thank you for seeing. We take very seriously the various opinions for this year's Digital Event, I would like to continue our efforts to be able to meet future, more and more of our expectations.

I mean real translation vs shitty Google translate lol

You apparently have a MUCH lower threshold for "amazing" than the rest of us. ;)

Mario Maker looks amazing by any threshold applied to video games. Star Fox... could be good. I'm worried about how often the treehouse guy was ramming straight into obstacles while looking at the gamepad.

Agreed. Sony and MS have had a terrible first party retail lineup thus far, and it doesn't matter because of the robust third party support. Hell, I don't think I own a single first party game from either of them this generation. That said, they will still crush it this Holiday thanks to the depth and variety of third party experiences available on their platforms.

Nintendo looks on pace for what could very well their worst holiday season in a very, very long time.
