I don't understand why they had a separate, earlier stream for the Smash DLC when their main conference was this starved for content.

This is the part that confuses the hell out of me. If you had nothing, why not just show everything together?

Like... this presentation would have been done in 20~25 minutes easy.

It was a bad conference...but holy shit dudes chill.

People having breakdowns over this is a little overboard, no?

It sucked really bad and if nothing else at E3 touches you, I can imagine the letdown but relax.

Its not the end of the world. Or even the end of Nintendo. Its a down year after two good-great years (in terms of conferences of course)...Just like those two didn't SAVE NINTENDO this won't kill them either.

It sucks and I question wtf they were thinking, especially since they technically hit all the buttons (Paper Mario, Metroid, and such) but in the wrong ways most if the time. But relax.

I think it makes sense to assume that all their big guns are in development for their next platform: The NX.

I hate to say this but maybe it is true that they should quit the hardware front and focus on creating software only. Nintendo people make some of the best gaming experiences out there but unfortunately, this time around, they just don't have the install base.

On one side, the way their digital events are made is very funny, fresh and very interesting that couldn't be possible on a live stage so for that I am grateful but I think the real reason they haven't had any live conferences at E3 for the last couple of years is because deep down they know they are too far behind and just can't compete....even if their games turn out really good.

Today's presentation was very disappointing as far as trying to generate excitement goes and the only game I was interested in was Yoshi's Wooly World but I think the lasting effect of that disappointment would have been much stronger if they had done it on stage.

10 Reasons the Digital Event was super disappointing:

1. No huge announcements. No big new Wii U game. No Retro.
2. Star Fox looked underwhelming, both graphically and mechanically. It was a decent start to the conference but nothing more, and I'm not convinced by it.
3. Cheap spin-offs were the order of the day. Not only did they look of poor quality, they felt actively insulting to fans who wanted new games in those series. In particular, Metroid was a gut-punch because we haven't had one in so long and it's so obviously something that no Metroid fan would want (Metroid in logo only) and AC:Amiibo was a gut-punch because we all believed a proper AC game was coming to Wii U.
4. If you were a Wii U only owner, you watched your console get killed off a mere 2.5 years after launch. It has had some great games, but that's still a ludicrous lifespan.
5. Spending time on stuff we've seen many times before. I love Yoshi, Xeno and Mario Maker but the total time dedicated to them was too much. We know these games well by now. Yoshi comes out in two weeks for god's sake!
6. No 3rd parties which would be mostly expected - but not even bloody indies, which wasn't.
7. Fire Emblem as a series beginning to display seriously worrying trends in terms of anime focus and pandering.
8. Easy and relatively cheap plays to tide over the hardcore crowd like a remaster or further VC announcements were ignored.
9. While I hate DLC personally, DLC announcements for Splatoon or other games might have helped stretch out the existing library for some players to distract from the fact that there's not much coming on Wii U.
10. Almost every newly revealed game looked cheap and disappointing, from Mario Tennis (which felt limited as a retail title on 3DS a year ago already) to the weird mashup of Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi. There was a sense that none of Nintendo's real talent was on display beyond those stragglers who started development years and years ago (Yoshi & Xeno).

I get that this year is the 'medicine' Nintendo (and its fans) have to take to get to a better future. And I believe this is the right decision and that the future is still bright. But that doesn't mean I won't tell you how fucking horrible the medicine tastes while I have to take it, and right now I've got a bad taste in my mouth.

Holy shit...

Someone actually tweeted this to Iwata....

While I am critical of management that kind of shit is simply embarrassing.

Star Fox 2 concepts finally out, platinum games is involved. A Mario level creator. A Zelda co-op game I can play with my son. I was just wishing for a Four Swords successor and my wish was granted.

I'm pretty excited.

I am honestly happy for you. But were you actually "amazed" by what Starfox turned out to be? It looked like a Kickstarter prototype rather than a $60 game.....:(

Nintendo's usual pattern is that they spread out information now throughout instead of putting everything in their E3 basket. I'm pretty sure if they decided to merge the smash announcement and mother beginnings on sunday and the micro-direct a few weeks back, there wouldn't be as much vitriol about content than there is now.

The conference was underwhelming. I'm not comparing it to Sony or Microsoft, but it didn't even last an hour. They didn't announce much either. And what was that Japanese game with the young idols? Nothing from Retro. No HD remasters. No Earthbound 3.

This.
They didn't mention Platinum being involved with Starfox.
The introduced the (m)puppets, but then did very little with them.

The content was okay really, but the presentation was dull. Not nearly a bad as EA's, though. So there's that.

The one glimmer of hope I took from this conference is that Metroid will make it proper to the NX, as it would be ridiculous to create a spinoff nobody asked for if you weren't going to deliver the goods eventually.

What I personally took from this show is Retro are making something for NX launch, the next 3D Mario will be NX launch, Zelda may well be cross-gen, and the NX is coming sooner rather than later.

All in all, to me, for a conference where they didn't talk about NX, they sure said a lot about NX.

(Tales from my ass, obviously, but I think everyone agrees next E3 will be Zelda U and purely NX after that)

Yeah that's basically what i'm saying. That's exactly what they should have done... exactly that.

I just hope they finally figure out the third party dilemma for the NX. They need third party games to compensate for down years like this. This part of the Nintendo console cycle always happens and they never learn.

Someone actually tweeted this to Iwata....

Ok, this conference sucked ass and I was super disappointed and bummed at the outcome.
But tweeting messages like this is uncalled for. Like someone mentioned, we should all go out for a nice walk. If you're in Chicago, like me, the weather is absolutely gorgeous and should be taken advantage of.

More like Next Level Games had a concept for a game and Nintendo decided that Metroid was a good fit for it. What I mean is that they didn't start developing this game thinking "Hmm we really need to create a Metroid Prime spin-off".

Having thought about this a bit, I don't think this DE was terrible. A bit lackluster due to the lack of major Wii U announcements (except the Star Fox unveiling) and most of the new 3DS games being spin-offs, but not terrible. The games shown looked nice for the most part, just nothing that got me super-hyped. The only one that left me wondering what Nintendo was thinking was Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival. I have no idea who that game is supposed to appeal to.

Well, I've calmed down from the whole E3 hype overload and now will be able to look at things more objectively.

It's just a press conference. The Wii U is still a fantastic console.

I'll continue to be a fan as long as they keep making good games. Shitty press conferences be damned.

Yeah a press conference does not define a console. If they stopped making games for the Wii U right now I'd still buy it for the great games it has. The NX will have great games. So much hyperbole in here.

I'm actually glad to see the 3DS isn't dead, it looks very promising after that conference. New Zelda, a Metroid spinoff that'll probably be fun, Hyrule Warriors, and a new Mario RPG are some serious announcements for the handheld.

That's nice, but we have been here before. We have seen this before. It's always words but no actions.

Nintendo has so many amazing IPs, such talented teams and so much money. How can you still manage to screw up then? Make me CEO of Nintendo for a day to start 10 projects and all the Nintendo fans will die of happiness during E3 2016.

Damn, i feel bad for being disappointed. But i really was. It's really time for Nintendo to grab the company by the balls and make sure that their games get what they deserve: the best.

They've moved their teams to NX. This is clear.

No one bought a Wii U, so why spend more money on it?

Heres the problem with this logic.

Remember the last 2 years of the Wii? We heard the same thing.

2012 saw Nintendo release in North America:
Kirby port collection (never even hit Europe)
Pikmin 2 port
Xenoblade, 3 year late localization
Mario Party 9
Pokepark
Rhythm Heaven Fever

Thats it

Hell of a lineup right?

All hands on the Wii U deck right?

Oh, and if youre curious, 2011 had
Fortune Street
Mario and Sonic Olympics
Kirby
Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident
Wii Play Motion
Mario Sports Mix
Syward Sword

Hell of a lineup right?

I means thats two entire years where you had two serious games, Skyward Sword and Kirby. On the most successful video game console of all time.

All revving up for the Wii U.

Well, i think they knew:

1) Iwata not comming
2) Explaining that we can't expect a zelda game @ E3 or NX information
3) Explaining that they will only talk about the games that will be released this year
4) Telling in this event that we will hear more of NX!! next year

It was clear from the start that this event wasn't expected to be "amazing"

e3 2008 was even worst. All eyes on next year! NX

Actually, hold up a fucking second...

Why didn't they mention Splatoon?
That games been getting tonnes of hype, lots of positive press, not one mention? Weird as hell.

I just hope Nintendo is actually creating games for NX. This is the same fucking shit that happened with the Wii to Wii U. No Games for the last year to year and a half for the Wii and there was still barely anything for the Wii U

This is my major fear. That Nintendo is 'tinkering' with hardware and software ideas instead of making fucking games for launch like they need to be. It was astonishing how little they had at the launch of Wii U after the drought on the Wii.

Then again, 3DS development was now in 3D, so I'm guessing they needed their major teams on that as well. As always, coming back to the issue of supporting both machines.

But they had better be ready to reveal NX in spring 2016 and launch in holiday 2016 with plenty of games.

Well, i think they knew:

1) Iwata not comming
2) Explaining that we can't expect a zelda game @ E3 or NX information
3) Explaining that they will only talk about the games that will be released this year
4) Telling in this event that we will hear more of NX!! next year

Oh, they knew 100%. The anti-hype tweet from Iwata earlier really confirmed it. Like I said earlier, sometimes you've just got to take your medicine.

It was definitely better than 2003, 2008, or 2012, at least. It also helped that the previously confirmed absence of NX and Zelda U set my expectations to a healthily low level.

I mean, Nintendo know how vicious Metroid fans can be, they'd be aware how badly poking the bear that would be.

Wii died because all the support actually went to the 3DS and then they were overwhelmed by HD development, coming back from it. This is why people want a cross platform.

Heh, for as loved as Sony's conference was and as dismissed Nintendo's is (probably deservedly so), I feel a lot better owning a 3DS over a Vita.

Explains why Iwata didn't buy tickets to E3. Knew their showing was underwhelming and didn't want to bother answering awkward questions by the press.

NX and mobile. I kind of agree with you. For example I think that Animal Crossing board game was originally a full-fledged sequel but then Wii U happened. No reason to waste a proper entry in the series on that system.

Is it better to waste a proper system on mid-gen? Because they'll just have to abandon it two years down the road.

This is the conceit of many in this thread.

But I can understand it; they're thinking like fans, not businesspeople.

Everyone in here is thinking short term. How screwed are Nintendo next gen? I'm thinking Sega levels of screwed (but Nintendo has more money to survive it, at least).

Will those that have a Wii U happily abandon it and spend money on NX so soon? Not happily, no. In 2018 will the millions upon millions of customers that didn't buy a Wii U and got sold on NX to save Nintendo (lol) happily abandon that to keep up with next Xbox and PS5? Hell no!
