I can't fucking believe this.

First, FF7 Remake and now this!?

I was just finishing up with Drakengard 3, only for this to happen.

I never thought that Yoko Taro would get another game, let alone a NieR sequel along with Platinum Games handling development.

This is a dream come true.

All of my money.

Okabe is back for the OST and Yoshida is doing the art as well.

The only thing I don't want to happen is this turning into a typical Platinum game. Let Nier stay Nier. Flesh out the RPG elements even further and make the combat excellent but do not make the whole game about intricate combat systems. Then we all will be happy?

PG is most likely being brought in for their expertise in gameplay/combat.

The directing, story, music etc. will be done the same same people that worked on the first Nier so I wouldn't worry.

From the trailer description

NieR New Project (temporary name) is a new third-person action RPG follow-up to the 2010 cult hit, NieR. Offering a fresh blend of action and RPG gameplay styles, NieR New Project is currently being developed in collaboration with PlatinumGames Inc., the studio known for its groundbreaking advancements in the action genre.

Sounds like Nier 1.

Huh. I didn't really think about how Platinum would handle the mishmash of genres and now I'm even more excited, which I did not think was possible.

This was a nice feature of the SE event. I didn't realize how huge Platinum Games is now. How many big titles do they have on their plate now wow.

Greatest announcement of E3.

Thank god someone is giving Yoko Taro more money and hopefully enough creative freedom.

Let's see if we can get that framerate better than Drakengard 3.

Harmonix doing final boss programming? :p

The issue is we have the potential for a very, well, standard Platinum game here, where the combat and encounters are varied and the mechanics feel good, but it doesn't do anything revolutionary or unique with the systems. The "Nier weird" will be layered over that in cutscenes and have little dictation over the events you play, and the RPG elements will feel tacked on. Worst case, it's disappointing for both fanbases, but it won't be a shit game by any stretch.

However, there's also the potential for the RPG elements to work in tandem with the combat, with equipment that does different things, enemies with different weaknesses, armor with different resistances, layered into a Platinum system with satisfying Platinum mechanics, and each encounter is inspired and married to the bizarre world inside Taro's head with all sorts of weird requirements for success or just totally fucked up situations and characters informing each fight. That could make everyone a bit happier.

So how's Drakengard 3, guys? Coincidentally I just ordered it last week but haven't cracked it open. I think now it'll have to wait until after I replay Nier.

It's a hot, fascinating mess. The story is surprisingly funny and the gameplay is janky as hell, but functional. Like a B movie in video game form. Worth playing for sure, just to experience the lunacy.

Which is why Platinum Games throwing their might behind Nier 2 has me very excited. Taro's demented plot plus Platinum's rock solid gameplay. Still can't believe this is a thing that is happening.

So it's a sequel to my game of the generation, possibly with one of the best characters ever in the lead, being developed by all the important leads from the first game plus the guys who made some of the greatest character action games of all time.

Words cannot express the sheer amount of joy I am feeling at this moment.

You should return it and forget it existed, same with Drakengard 2.

I don't know what they were thinking shipping something like D3 and putting Access games in charge

Poor Access, having to live with the incredible standards Cavia set for the Drakengard series
lol

I actually really enjoyed the gameplay in Nier. Yeah, there wasn't a lot to it, but for whatever reason I had a blast with the combat and the game switches things up so much that it never gets stale. Jeff Cannata's famous "more fun than it is good" was a very apt description for Nier.

With that said, bringing in Platinum is nothing but a solid positive. Hopefully a deeper combat experience will give Nier 2 the recognition the first game deserved.

I felt the same. And I really enjoyed some of the boss fights too. I also loved the 'word' levelling up system. It was weird, but oddly fun for me. I remember struggling (well, mildly at least, the game is pretty easy) because I hadn't found (through random battles) a 'word' to level up my MP bar, which meant I had limited magic use at one point.

I also liked that you could re-map your magic to a certain degree. Hell, you could remove guard and dodge to put more magic attacks in (if I remember right).

But yea, hopefully Platinum can take it way further.

Also, to weigh in on the bulge debate, it's totally a bulge. It's quite prominent in motion if you're looking for it.

Video games.

Super janky and a technical mess, but really different and cool. Its definitely a Yoko Taro game with all the good and bad that comes with it. Great characters and really interesting story that takes a while to get going with serviceable at best gameplay. OST and character design is amazing as well.

Ha, the GAF meltdowns are delicious.

So hype! Now I just need a way to play the original since I never finished it. Please show up on PSNow (or with the sequel).

I have complete faith in Platinum, my worries are that S-E got Platinum because they want an action game, you know?

I have no doubts Platinum is capable of more, I'd love to see a 2D platformer from them, actually.

This is what I'm worried about, too. Platinum is incredible at a lot of things, and they can switch it up, but let's not forget the things that made Nier incredible, too. I just don't want it to have complete action focus.

The artwork and reveal is reassuring, though. Especially with Okabe's somber music.

yo

what if this is actually about kaine & emil fighting aliens like in the nier supplemental book

remember that random one-off line about that

well, if that is
Emil
, he has light coming from his eyes, so maybe he's still alive after all.

I freaked out when I saw this at the SE conference. Once I heard the piano melody, I knew exactly what I was seeing and it truly sunk in. I was not expecting this at all, in any form. This was definitely the most unexpected thing at E3 for me, and one of my top-3 announcements.

Holy shit, really?
D: wow I never would have called this. I didn't love the first one but I did beat it and had some fun. I think there are improvements to be made but I'm interested.

Weapons crazy action rpg's are always welcome.

Platinum is making is too? What the fuck happened with this E3? I swear, if you didn't get something you wanted out of this E3, it's time to put the games away.

Challenge Accepted.

I heard the piano, but the shock didn't let me accept it. I told "it's Nier", but I wasn't expecting this at all.

It was even better when they said it was Platinum and how I was recognizing the names that were working on it.

Thank you Square Enix. You made a bunch of folks very happy.
And Taro will make his worst and and craziest to us

didnt like Neir but with that lineup it deserves another shot. i did the biggest double take ever when I saw the thread title... Platinum games fuck yea

this e3 is insane.

PS4 with all those exclusives... And from Japanese pubs too.. Amazing.
Platinum games too, my God.

How does platinum games have the time and manpower to handle all these projects? Just how big are they!?

This is amazing. So we're getting a proper Nier game but with great combat. So basically the GOAT?
I'm actually starting to like S-E somewhat again.

God damn I never would have guessed this to be at e3

There's something about the first game that is really special imo. It's not a particularly great game but maybe it's the characters, maybe it's the soundtrack but it's stuck with me longer than many other games last gen (some of which were prolly better)

Bring it on, platinum will deliver nicely on the gameplay too
